My War Storyline

A disturbing portrayal of foreign fighters wanting to film themselves in Syria. The complexity of this documentary is what resides in the head of the Canadians that volunteered to help the Kurds. More interested in videoing themselves in the perfect uniform while reciting perfect worded war phases, than ever trying to understand they are in fact, nothing but propaganda for the war effort.—whitfed-1

My War Movie Reviews

Embarrassingly Bad

I have watched many documentaries about the Syrian Civil War and this one is so bad that it has to be seen to be believed. Absolutely nothing happens in this documentary and this could just be classified as extreme tourism.

What you have here is a dumpy French Canadian guy who has zero combat or medical experience and a romanticized idea of fighting against ISIS. He spends the entire documentary sitting around, struggling to communicate with the sketchy people he’s fighting under and walking around like he’s an experienced combat veteran. In reality his combat experience is shooting custom paper targets in his backyard with a CZ858 sports rifle. A really distracting aspect was that he has a lot of loose equipment and bags hanging off of him which would seriously get in the way if he was to suddenly be engaged by an enemy. Not even the YPG commanders seemed to know why he was there but they don’t care because its just more meat for the meat grinder (harsh but true).

There are also other people in this documentary, like a 40 year old women who just looks out of her element because she’s in an all women’s unit that are much younger than her and don’t speak her language.

Definitely the worst aspect of this documentary is that the participants paint themselves as heroes and the documentary makes zero effort to explore how complicated the war is and how sketchy and disorganised the YPG is (YPG has ties to Communism, Anarchism and numerous suspected war crimes). There aren’t really any interviews with YPG fighters or commanders and you get the impression that nobody really knows what they’re doing.

Seriously don’t watch this unless you want to watch a bunch of mentally unstable westerners play soldier in a proxy war.

Laughable – every moment of it

The foreign volunteers joined the Kurds for one purpose- to video themselves in Syria. Nothing happens throughout this entire documentary. Nothing!!! Do Not Waste Your Time.
