Dark Harvest Storyline

Every fall in a small Midwestern town, a supernatural specter named “Sawtooth Jack” arises from the cornfields and approaches the town’s church, where violent gangs of young boys hungrily await their chance to confront the legendary nightmare in an annual harvest rite of life and death. Richie Shepard lives in the shadow of his big brother who won last year’s “October Prize” to get his ticket out of town. To prove himself and join his brother, Richie pairs up with restless dreamer Kelly Haines, who will do whatever it takes to escape this dead-end town. Against the rules and the odds, Richie and Kelly decide to hunt down the legendary nightmare to win the Run and their freedom, together.

Children of the Corn meets Pumpkinhead.

Within the opening few minutes, I noticed the stunning photography and visuals. Since I enjoy attention to detail and a director’s effort to make a film look good on screen, ‘Dark Harvest’ already won me over within the first couple of minutes.

Every year just before Halloween, a scarecrow named Sawtooth Jack (not sure why the synopsis says October Boy, as this is never mentioned in the film) comes to life to kill teenagers. Days before, teens taking part in The Run are locked in their rooms and starved for three days. Thereafter, they go out hunting Sawtooth Jack. The winner receives money and a luxury car, and his parents receive a big house. This ‘sacrifice’ ensures a good crop for the rest of the year.

Richie’s brother Jim won The Run the previous year, received his car and is believed to be traveling the world. He hasn’t been seen or heard of since. This year, Richie is determined to do the Run. His parents tries to forbid him, and their actions convinced me there was more than meets the eye to this annual event.

There’s a great deal of gore in the film, with kill scenes swift and unexpectedly. The make-up effects are really good. The film is atmospheric and as mentioned earlier, this film looks darn amazing! I’ve seen many scarecrow movies over the years, but I think this is still one of the scariest looking scarecrow villains. In fact, Sawtooth Jack reminded me a bit of a younger Pumpkinhead.

There are twists almost until the moment the credits roll, and when it does, some viewers might be disappointed at the outcome, and some might be excited with the prospect of a sequel or even a franchise. I enjoyed this very much.

Finally a horror movie that is (really) worth a watch! Why? Because it is an ACTOR”S movie firstmost. THAT”S the way I like it!

Seen so many below average horror movies this month, that werent worthy of my attention for one minute, but this movie is fortunately really something else. Mind you, it isnt terrific, but a really quality made ACTOR’s movie nonetheless.

The good; I have got to applaud the direction firstmost, because this movie stands out on many levels that all come together in a great was:

Firstmost the acting is top notch, with Casey Likes stirring memories of a young Tom Cruise, that’s how immpressed I was by his great acting performance. But all the other actors were really solid and real as well, supported by natural, real sounding dialogues, HOW I have missed those in so many other “horror” movies.

This is FIRSTMOST an ACTOR’s movie dressed up as horror, but basically it is a tale of family love and at what cost one is willing to sacrifice ones own life for the better of a dear family member.

Yes, there are also several of really sick and gory slasher scenes, with heads split uopen and the sorts, but it is all done in a tasteful manner, with beautiful photography, editing and sound. This is a piece of ART firstmost, only second a slasher movie.

Beware: this movie is probably NOT suited for the fans of diehard gore slasher movies, but I would like to recommend it to the arthouse movie fans, who usually dont see movies like these.

Shocktober Boy

No pun intended – this flew under my radar … but a newsletter brought it back up! If you don’t mind your horror movies to have a lot of blood and gore effects … well you have a winner for yourself right here then. Not for the sensitive souls then. When this takes off … it really takes off.

Special effects are good – and the story does work well too. Having some interesting actors in it too (like Jeremy Davies) … the twists are well placed, even if you may be able to see through some or even most of them. Seeding and harvesting … going hand in hand! And fear of the unknown taking over a town. Story wise this has many aspects from other horror movies – but tastefully taking certain bits to compose a … well different beast! And talking of … we may have a new … well series! I can see this spawning sequels or prequels or whatever! It would be quite fitting …
