Doom: Annihilation Movie Reviews

Scuppered by budgetary deficiencies

DOOM: ANNIHILATION is the latest video game adaptation of the popular 1990s series, following on from the misfiring Rock vehicle that came out around fifteen years ago now. Sadly this one is scuppered from the very beginning when you realise that the budget is extremely tight, leading to rushed direction, poor scripting, and a generally unknown and underwhelming cast. In fact, the only guy I recognised here was Louis Mandylor, who looks just like the DOOM player but is wasted in a minor role. The plot is pure ALIENS rip-off, with gung ho dialogue leading to incessant action, but as a former DOOM addict I was disappointed that the only recognisable parts of the game are the undead grunts, the teleporters, and a single imp. I was hoping for a cyber or spider demon to show up at the climax, but instead we get some laughable CGI landscape thing which really is this film’s nadir.

bland

Scientists on Phobos are using ancient unknown stones to develop teleportation but it brings horrors and danger. Marines arrive in response to a distress call. Lt. Joan Dark is hated by her troupes. Upon arrival, they find a few survivors and the base under attack by the scientists who turned into monsters. This is a straight to video product and one could probably find it streaming somewhere. It’s not particularly anything good. The actors are bland. The story is unimaginative. It starts well but the movie quickly stalls. Non of the characters are that compelling and the actors are second tier. It’s a video game movie and nothing more than that.

No One is Allowed to Leave

Some Plot spoiler explanations.

The film centers on Lt. Joan Dark who is on her way to a base on Phobos, a moon on Mars. She leads a group of Marines. Phobos has been experimenting with a transporter that sends people to Earth (and from Earth to Phobos). As it turns out, this is alien technology. Combine the monolith on the moon in 2001 with “Stargate” and make then Sumerians instead and you got the picture. Although I am not sure why they left Earth in the first place.

The first half builds up the characters and the last half is shoot them up stuff. I found the non-action half more interesting than killing the demons. So-so sci-fi horror.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
