Boudica: Rise of the Warrior Queen Storyline

Boudica is an innocent sixteen-year-old girl who is forced into an arranged marriage by her father, the leader of a Celtic Tribe. However, her mother is unsure, doing whatever it takes to protect her daughter; so much so that she takes Boudica and persuades her to flee the village and live in her childhood home, away from an arranged marriage and a miserable life. Confusion and uncertainty fills Boudica’s world as she faces so many challenges – the constant protection from her mother, falling in love, the ambiguity of her father’s whereabouts and finding her inner strength and power. It is only a matter of time before the past catches up with everyone and Boudica must transform from a girl into the warrior queen of legend in order to protect the lives of those she loves.

Boudica: Rise of the Warrior Queen Movie Reviews

A subject deserving of a far better film

A few films have been made of the adult life of Boudica, the warrior queen who led a revolt against Roman rule in Britain. A good film on her rise to being The Warrior Queen would be interesting. Unfortunately, this is not that film: it covers that subject but is not a good film.

The central plot is okay but hardly makes for compelling viewing. Some unnecessary sub-plots weaken the overall effort (but without them the film would be too short!). There is some engagement with characters but the performances, including that of Ella Peel as Boudica, limit that.

Production values are okay, as are the action scenes, what there are. For a film on the making of one of Britain’s most famous warriors there’s not that many action/battle scenes.

Disappointing.

Nothing rises here, nothing at all….

Recently, there have been a spate of singularly poor dramas about historical figures from the British Isles – “Mary, Queen of Scots” (2018), “Robert, the Bruce” (2019) being two of the least agreeable – but this takes that low benchmark and throws it under the bus (or chariot). Anyone expecting a battle-fest featuring this famously brave and courageous Queen leading loads of people in woad fighting off the fearsome Roman Legions is in for an huge disappointment. You will possibly have seen bloodier battles on a rugby field – indeed, what action there is seemed more about whether our as yet only teenage Boudica was going to be seduced by a deserting Roman legionnaire impersonating, well, who really cares. I’m afraid that this is just dreadful – the sort of film you would be proud of your kids making at college, but deserving of no more than that. The production quality is adequate, and actually the technical aspects – costumes, wattle huts etc., are adequate too – but the acting, dialogue and the whole pace of the thing makes you ever grateful that it’s just 80 minutes long… Avoid, you know you want to.

Rip-Off Britain

I always thought that Boudica was recognised as a Warrior Queen for the many ‘bloodbath’ battles she led, fought & won. That may’ve been the case in legendary history, but this slow-paced sombre movie doesn’t show it. That leads me to think that ‘Boudica’ is just a ‘hyped-up’ part of British history, that somebody somewhere made more of her & fantasised the reality – because she was a gutsy, passionate, queen, & ruler of the Iceni Tribe who took her role as queen – seriously.
