California No Movie Reviews

L.A. is not “a character in this movie”, stop saying that.

On the downside, this is just another boring hipster chit-chat movie; lots of boring talk about boring stuff that hipsters & neurotypicals think makes them seem really interesting but actually only reveals them to be painfully, crushingly boring. You know the press-junket scene in this film, where every interviewee just gives the same dumb, boring formulaic answers to every question, but with very realistic fake sincerity? That’s actually what life is like every day for a neurodivergent person talking to neurotypicals, every single time you all open your mouths to say something that you think is interesting. But I digress. Upsides: the movie really skewers boring people & the movie industry, specifically the way people insist that movies are for cities; case in point, all the people calling this “an L. A. dating movie”. Yes, it is about relationships in a superficial world, but it could literally be anywhere, because people are this superficial everywhere, and only very boring neurotypical hipsters would fail to notice that; to mangle a famous quote: “There’s no there there, or anywhere, because you’re all the same, everywhere.” And I’ve saved the best upside of this film for last: the scene-stealing performance by Paul Telfor as the boring hipster’s only friend. He made the whole movie bearable. “Just say you’re a screenwriter, nobody wants to talk to a screenwriter. Shh, shh. Darling.” Overall, this is a very hard movie to watch because the main character is such a rotten, useless piece of first-world trash, but still rewarding because the supporting characters were well-written and the actors really shine in their roles. Ultimately, a good film about why awful people get together and stay together (spoiler ahead): it’s because nobody else can stand them, and they’re scared of being alone because being alone feels too much like happiness, which also scares them. I deducted a star for the overuse of music montages.

I was going to ask for the return of 84 minutes back into my life, BUT…

I finally realized this $25K budget film actually has a purpose: When you think your life sucks and you just can’t go on, watch this film, learn how others have it much worse than you. Noah Segan played his cuck role perfectly in that he always looked on the verge of crying.

smart and a brilliant take on LA

Very smart, wry, and insightful writing- an excellent look into LA love and life. Highly recommend!
