The Comeback Trail Storyline
The second teaming between De Niro and Gallo since the 1988 action comedy Midnight Run, which the latter wrote, follows Max Barber (De Niro) and his partner Walter (Zach Braff) who play down-and-out B-Movie producers who find themselves in trouble with mob boss Reggie Fontaine (Morgan Freeman). To save himself and Walter, Barber has to sell the only great script he’s ever had to his former intern and, now, A-Movie producer, James Moore (Emile Hirsch). On the first day of shooting Moore’s lead actor dies in a stunt accident and lets him cash in on a huge insurance policy. That gives Barber an idea to do the same. They take a horrible script called The Oldest Gun In The West and hire a washed-up cowboy actor, Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones) to play the lead. Known for doing his own stunts during his prime, Montana is poised for an early demise allowing Barber to get away with his get-rich-quick scam. Only one problem…nobody told Montana.

A good and decent comedy
Someone says that if you reunite some old actors to make a comedy you will find with a piece of crap, a bad movie with tons of bad jokes, bad lines and lousy performances. This is not the case. If you avoid fart and sexual jokes, that’s a point to count it, since almost every Hollywood comedy from the last decade just repeat that formula. This days it’s hard to find in a comedy a masterpiece, and this is not one of that category, but is a pretty decent one, and is genuine funny and worth to watch.
Robert De Niro make a good old failure Hollywood B class movie producer in search of a last great movie, as those criminals the look for a great last job, and that comparison is good enough to make you laugh. His character is ridiculous enough, without exagerate the tone. Morgan Freeman make a great mafioso type of bad guy, even when his character is secondary. Tommy Lee Jones is great as an almost retired old western actor. Zach Braff is just hilarious as De Niro’s character nephew’s.
All in all, is not a bad movie. Is a good and decent comedy that just make you laugh and forget your problems for a while, make you have a good time. And that is more than many other comedies can do this days. It’s a comedy, for Christ sake!
Re-Making a deal
If you know me or are an avid reader of my reviews (thank you for that, though also thank you if this is the first one of them you are reading), you will be aware that I tend to watch the original movies first before I watch a remake. I did not in this case! I knew of the movie, but I didn’t know it was a remake, so when I did rent it (streaming wise), I was clueless to that fact. I do plan to watch the original, but it is not in my highest priorities.
That being said, it might be the reason I rated this higher than the average rating is. On the other hand I do tend to be what some would call soft when it comes to rating. Which is why I would never be able to even think what our producer character plans to do in the movie … a role filled by Robert De Niro … and he has fun with it. A role though that has to endure a lot – it touches Looney Tunes absurdities at times … things that should not leave him without serious injuries … at least.
That being said, this is a comedy and you should try to overlook that or rather roll with the flow. The other actors make this easy … the story is quite predictable once the premise is set or you know what is supposed to happen. You also know that … well nothing ever goes as planned. Still funny to see things go … well south, no pun intended. Lower your expectations maybe and just enjoy this decent effort … unless you know the original and feel differently about it … I would totally understand.
Great cast, nice easy to follow story.
The Comeback Trail deserves a higher rating than it gets at the moment (5.6 stars while I was writing this). Okay you will not die from laughing but it’s certainly pleasant to watch. It’s an easy movie to watch, well written, and with a great cast. Robert DeNiro, Tommy Lee Jones, Morgan Freeman, those are world class actors that almost never fail and they didn’t in this movie. Add Emile Hirsch and Zach Braff to that cast and you get a movie full of talent and it clearly shows. To give this movie a negative review is just a bad judgement. As a comedy it’s just lighthearted but not bad at all.
