B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989 Movie Reviews

For those who weren’t there – you’ll get the VIBE!

I was not prepared for all these original images from the 80s. Watched it two weeks ago and cant even explain how strange it feels. I live here, in Berlin, 40 years later and it is another lofe, another city, another mindset. Everything is different now… The documentary was strong! Strong images, well done narrative and well chosen images (also from other movies). I was never a real fan of the 80s and never will be but the feeling, the vibe, the power, the emotion behind the time… this film transfered the Zeitgeist to all those who weren’t there, including me. And hell yes, I felt like I was there. So – hell of a ride! Be prepared and rock on!

Great archive material

If you were young in the 80s and a fan of the tube, this is where that West Berlin special came from. At the time I was completely bemused by the post punk drug induced cacophony showcased in that and on John Peels sessions and preferred the Human League. Now my ears have matured, I find I actually love the raw sound produced by Einsturdenze Neubauten and that sound, and this movie, takes me back to a period of my life I’d largely forgotten. It’s amazing that EN sounds so fresh today. So, while I’ll no doubt watch this again, younger people or those not very interested in music, will probably find this rather slow.

Watch it all from the safety of your seat

Went to see B Movie: ‘Lust And Sound In West Berlin’, last night, its a must to get the DVD from German amazon out in October, because if you weren’t having the late night indecency, you can now enjoy it in the safety of your seat. A magnificent marrying of style and content, and if you thought you were going to get lost in an unspecified anonymous collage of images; there’s a clever use of main protagonist Mark Reeder, who as well as using voice over keeps you watching and draws you in with his own super 8 footage from this time – which includes when Nick Cave moved in with him.

Mark Reeder is founder and owner of the German electronic dance music label “MFS” and “Flesh”.
