Lucy Storyline

Lucy, a young American woman living in Taipei, knows that she’s in trouble when her casual boyfriend of a few weeks, Richard, a man she doesn’t really know well, handcuffs a locked briefcase, contents unknown, to her wrist, forcing her to deliver it to a Mr. Jang in his swanky hotel suite. A scared Lucy quickly learns that Mr. Jang is a drug kingpin who is not averse to killing anyone in carrying out his work. That encounter with Mr. Jang leads to Lucy being forced to act as one of his drug mules, specifically of a powerful, synthetic drug called CPH4. Things start to change for Lucy when she inadvertently absorbs a high dose of CPH4 into her system, leading to several physiological changes to her self, most notably in that she begins to use more and more of her cerebral matter than the usual ten percent of most humans. As Lucy becomes more and more aware of everything around her – a result of the drug – she embarks on two concurrent paths, one being to get back at Mr. Jang and his associates for what they’ve done to her, including the torture they’ve inflicted on her. But the other path may trump the first, that second path which includes retrieving the CPH4 from the three other drug mules. It also involves Dr. Samuel Norman, arguably the foremost evolutionary theorist, and Paris Police Captain Pierre Del Rio, the later her touchstone to humanity, that need for a touchstone which becomes more and more important as she approaches her end goal.

Lucy Movie Reviews

Luc Besson’s ‘Lucy’.

I enjoyed this for the most-part. The momentum in combination with the 90 minute runtime, kept myself entertained for the entirety. It’s far from perfect, but it’s entertaining. Then again I didn’t labour over the science to over complicate the overall enjoyment. The climax is probably the most contentious and unfavourable issue, but I appreciate the intent of Luc Besson’s vision.

Note: It’s probably best to ignore the super low-scoring trolls, who create accounts to downvote and spread negativity. If you don’t have some constructive criticism, don’t say anything at all. Any ‘Not helpful’ downvotes on this review are probably by the aforementioned.

Something different from Luc Besson…

LUCY is a French action film that explores the popular concept (some might say misconception) that the human race only utilises 10% of the power of the brain. The convoluted storyline sees everyday Scarlett Johansson accidentally exposed to a new wonder drug which opens up her brain to a much higher percentage and subsequently changes her life in a very big way.

This is something of a mixed bag of a film which was missold by the trailers and advertising as an action thriller. It’s more of a thinking person’s science fiction film. There are some clumsy thriller elements in the story, namely those including the sinister criminal Mr. Jang (a delightful western role for the fine Korean actor Choi Min-sik), but most of all this is an exploration of the human mind and what it’s ultimately capable of. It’s much like LIMITLESS in that respect.

Generally this is an enjoyable film that feels fresh and inventive. The early thriller aspects of the story are handled very well with a ton of suspense. Once the sci-fi twists kick in it takes a while for the viewer to acknowledge the change in genre, but from that point it remains philosophical and engaging. The ending threatens to become overwhelmed in CGI but the film as a whole remains fun and the likes of Morgan Freeman bring gravitas and believability to their parts. As with UNDER THE SKIN, Johansson proves herself an actress willing to accept more outre parts, which is to be commended.

Fun action thriller turns into mumbo jumbo

Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is studying in Taiwan. Her new friend Richard tricks her into delivering a suitcase. It’s filled with a new synthetic drug CPH4. She is kidnapped by kingpin Mr. Jang and forced to be a drug mule surgically inserted into her abdomen. She is kicked by her abductor and the drug seeps into her system. Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman) has a theory about the human mind. Most use only 10%. The drug opens up Lucy’s mind turning her into a superhuman as she uses more and more of her brain. With the help of Paris police detective Pierre Del Rio, she tracks down the drug from the other mules and contact Norman to transcend her humanity.

This starts off as a fun action thriller filled with inventive Luc Besson touches. Johansson is good transitioning from victim to machine-like superbeing. I like going to a lesser used exotic location like Taiwan. However Besson tries to be profound. It descends into a lot of mumbo jumbo. At which point, I realize the whole movie is a lot of scientific mumbo jumbo. It wouldn’t matter so much but Besson seems to really want to say something. He ends up saying nothing.
