Love’s Greek to Me Movie Reviews

Opa! This was romantic and refreshing, I loved it.

The best thing about this film was the story of commitment. I loved how one of our leads shared that yes, he can promise to be there and know that he will be. The concept that when times get tough, you don’t leave…that is when you love the hardest. It’s not easy, it requires commitment and effort.

The second best thing about this film was Yannis Tsimitselis, who played Mike. He was a revelation and had me looking to see what other films he has starred in. He managed to play one of the most romantic characters that I have seen in a long time. One who was sensitive enough to his partner not to push or be over-bearing, knew how to commit whole-heartedly, was romantic…did a great job preparing his partner for his family experience and helped set her expectations. It was wonderful and ever so refreshing to see.

The third best thing about this film was the gorgeous backdrop of Santorini Greece and the sharing of Greek traditions. From the evil eye to the myth of Aphrodite, Eros and Psyche to Greek wedding customs in the beautiful Greek Orthodox Church…it was warm and lovingly done. As a non-Greek with many Greek friends, I could relate to the experience of Ilana and thought that Tory DeVitto’s sweet, gentle approach to the sharing of customs was perfect. I thought having her character have an archeology background was ingenious in the plot. It allowed her to have knowledge of Ancient Greece and Greek mythology…so she wasn’t just standing there portrayed as a dumb-non-Greek (one of my pet peeves).

I loved the family feel to this film and the genuine love and support of the potential mother-in-law, played exceptionally by Marina Sirtis. The conversation with the box was a very nice touch.

This is a big, big recommendation from me to all the romantics out there…and anyone who would like to see some gorgeous shots of Santorini…and anyone who fantasizes about being part of a Greek family…you will love this film.

A True Monster In Law

Marina Sirtis gives Jane Fonda a run for her money as an absolutely despicable mother-in-law to be. The crap this character pulls is just unbelievable, and frankly, hard to watch.

Torrey DeVitto plays a wishy washy woman engaged to the monster in laws wishy washy son. These two have absolutely zero chemistry and look awkward together in every scene.

The scenery is just amazing though. But not worth sitting through this thoroughly unenjoyable slog.

BTW, Torrey’s real life father has the talent in the family. For years he was a crack musician in Billy Joel’s band. Torrey on the other hand… meh.

Beautiful

I was impressed by scenery in this movie as much or more than any other movie I can remember. It is so exotic and beautiful. There are a lot of opportunities to enjoy it.

The story is a little different than a lot of the boy-meet-girl-etc romances because the central couple is already together and their romance is only nominally central to the story. Torrey DeVitto’s Ilana is the center of the story and all of her relationships. Her relationships with Athena and with Mike are the most dominant, but also her mother and Mike’s sister.

The story is also simple and very predictable. You can see the ending developing a little at a time from early on. But the heart of this movie is just that- the heart and much of that goes back to Ilana. The tension in this movie is more emotional than dramatic.

For half the movie, Athena is beyond annoying as a Momzilla. Actually monster-in-law. Like so many of these movies a character has a major personality change towards the end and actually becomes interesting.

The acting is mostly good. I won’t say either way about Marina Sirtis because I was so annoyed by Athena for so long, but the rest of the cast did a good job. DeVitto carries the emotional heart of the story quite well The dialog is ok. It is not terribly witty, but there are some moments that it delves into deeper emotions.
