Jackdaw Storyline

A former motocross champion and army veteran is now caring for his younger brother. Broke, he agrees to do an open water pick up of a mysterious illegal package in the North Sea. Jackdaw is the man and the main protagonist. Jackdaw is the ex-Army and ex-Motor Cross ‘champion’ (of what?) and retired broke drop-out seeking a new lease-of-life. However his old life is just about to get really really nasty. Family values are not what this movie is about.

He is broke and has to collect a mysterious package in a bag from a North East drill point in the sea. Yup in the sea. In the water! It goes a bit insane and never stops really being insane with story twists and turns and over-the-top violence. He gets doube-crossed whereever he goes. He can’t pay for anything and is constantly furious. Cue the problems.

It’s a bit bland and the writing needs improvement. Some sketches from other films are used and influences are very much Train Spotting glamourous levels and the north shown in a particular bad light. It sets the gritty atmosphere very well with tidy cinematography.

Desperation is key to this movie. He gets hmself in real bother with the local gang due to the content of the package being missing. He did not know this. It was quite clearly a set-up.

He soon finds himself in a warehouse trying to find the owner of the said package. However he finds pure trouble and a police raid. He also finds an undercover detective played by the legendary Thomas Turgoose.

Thomas is a solid actor still and can hold a gun properly. However the script just goes absolutely bonkers from here. He takes Jackdaw to the main gang in another place and they soon start having an intense shoot-out.

From here it just gets really messy and is a properly poorly-written b movie. There is soon a love story and you hear the real backstory and why Jackdaw is so pissed and you can’t help but feel sorry for the guy.

Except the whole story and concept is so ludicres and so stupid that it just feels flat. Not even solid acting and bonkers’ performances can make the script good. Oh dear. Anoher mediocre straight-to-Netflix movie.

Decent enough

“Jackdaw” is a dark Brittish thriller that looked like it could be cool with its badass hero and plenty of motorbike action. Plus it also stars Jenna Coleman and “This is Englands” Thomas Turgoose which is a bonus. But I wanted to like it more.

There are some decent little chases and shootouts, and a genuinely scary looking villian. But the plot is pretty straightforward and more and more unlikely things happen as it all comes to a finale that just fizzles out.

Its still decent enough though with its promising start, its overall style and cool music. As well as its nice cast. Still making for an above average gritty movie.

Not wishing to start rumours, but if Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Jenna Coleman were ever to have child, it would be a thing of beauty! It may not, however, be terribly discerning as this film is nobody’s finest hour. OJC is the eponymous character. A former moto-cross champion with a bit of baggage, he is reduced to intercepting packages strapped to wind turbines in the North Sea for his slightly bonkers dealer pal “Silas” (Joe Blakemore). Something’s gone wrong with his latest mission though. There’s no payday awaiting him at the rendezvous point, then he gets shot at by a man on a horse! Luckily his ageing bike has more HP that the real thing so he escapes only to run out of petrol, then thump a cop who tries to apprehend him, then end up calling in some favours to try and find who has kidnapped his brother “Simon” in apparent retaliation for him not delivering the goods. Still with me? “Jack Dawson” (yep, there are a few “Titanic” jokes) has now to try and fathom who has his sibling and en route we encounter some unsavoury types from England’s North East before a frankly rather underwhelming denouement. Coleman features unremarkably once or twice, as does the quite engaging Thomas Turgoose as the outwardly weedy but surprisingly resilient “Craig” but the writing is all a bit bland, the story a bit thin and undercooked and the set-piece scenarios are just too staged – especially the police raid of the rave – to be effective. It’s watchable and to be fair it doesn’t hang around, but it could just as easily be an episode of “The Professionals” and I doubt I’ll recall it for long.
