Lucy Hardgrove (Bethany Joy Lenz) is a screenwriter who lands the job of a lifetime when she’s hired to pen the script for a remake of the beloved holiday movie, “His Merry Wife”. First filmed in 1947 at beautiful, historic Biltmore House, it has long been considered a Christmas classic. When the head of the studio isn’t satisfied with the ending Lucy wrote because it deviates from the original’s feel-good conclusion, he sends Lucy to Biltmore Estate for research and inspiration. While there, she unwittingly discovers the ability to travel to the 1947 set of “His Merry Wife”. through the help of an hourglass. After shaking off the initial shock of this turn of events, Lucy embraces this as her chance to uncover the truth about the movie’s original ending. While on set, she and Jack Huston (Kristoffer Polaha), one of the film’s stars, spend time together and become close. But her sudden appearance has set off a chain of events that put the production in jeopardy. Before she can return to the present, Lucy must make things right or threaten to alter the future forever.

A Biltmore Christmas Movie Reviews

a Magnificent Structure, A Magnificent Romance

This Hallmark holiday romance is an enjoyable time-travel story that borrows some elements from (and honors) “Time After Time” and “Somewhere in Time”.

This fantasy film features Bethany Joy Lenz as Lucy Hardgrove, a screenwriter with a shaky career who is charged with rewriting “His Merry Wife!”, a film from the forties. She travels to the Biltmore Estate, to gain insight on the subject, where she encounters an hourglass among the original film’s artifacts. Somehow the timepiece transports her, and she interacts with the cast and crew of the film, leading to complications.

Miss Lenz is wonderful in her role. Kristoffer Polaha, who plays the male lead, grows on you, as the role requires. The rest of the cast is quite enjoyable, especially A. K. Benninghofen, who plays Margaret, the superfan of the original film, who becomes a super sleuth and practically forces Lucy to reveal her secret. Jonathan Frakes is a pleasant surprise.

The Biltmore Estate itself is a star—worth seeing and a great setting for a romance.

Finally, the ending of the film is very satisfying. This is a feel-good film that really warms the heart.

You want a different Hallmark script? Here it is 🙂

Kristoffer Polaha always adds his unique charm to a character, and he doesn’t do the same character every time, as some of the actors and actresses in these movies do. We particularly know Bethany Joy Lenz from “A Christmas Secret”, which is one of our Hallmark Christmas favorites.

This film has performances that rival old-style big-screen movies, and the plot has a classic fantasy charm with a unique twist … an hourglass that sends our intrepid heroine to the past for an hour at a time … unless it gets broken.

The dialogue between the leads is quick and clever, and the plot constructs great atmosphere between them. Highly recommended.

Magical beyond expectations

I have been waiting for this movie since the first trailer I saw for it. I love the Biltmore. I love Bethany Lenz. I love Kristoffer Polaha. But I could not have imagined the absolute magic that they would create in this movie. The writing far surpasses any Christmas Hallmark movie I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen them all.) The device for the time travel is ingenious and used with both humor and pathos. The 1947 sets and costumes are gorgeous. The acting feels like a major release movie instead of tv. I laughed and cried. I can’t wait to watch again to catch more – there’s so much to absorb in every scene. Thank you and congratulations to Hallmark for creating a new Christmas classic.
