In the genre of film noir, a standard trope is the hard-boiled male private detective embroiled in a crime of passion. It is therefore entirely appropriate for a Lifetime film to have the dedicated gumshoe played by a woman.
Lucy Thompson is a private eye who prides herself on strong personal boundaries. She always has her guard up, and the only person she genuinely trusts is her best friend from college, Cami.
Unfortunately, Lucy has a lapse in judgment when she becomes romantically involved with Clive, one of her clients. An intricate cat-and-mouse game follows in which Lucy is being set up by an unknown nemesis. In the process, poor Clive dies when Lucy accidentally shoves him hard against the fireplace during an intense interchange.
It was not made plausible that Lucy would not have been charged with manslaughter in the death of Clive. It was also surprising that Lucy would be sitting taking photographs of Adriana being strangled to death without intervening to try to save a woman’s life.
The film was well-paced, and there was good suspense. But instead of spending time in an orange jumpsuit, Lucy is on the verge of publishing what could be a bestseller about her experience. The title of the book should be: “A Question of Trust: How I Messed up Professionally, Yet Avoid Time in the Slammer.”
