Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special Movie Reviews

A very Norm special. A beautiful goodbye.

There’s no real way to organize this so I’m just gonna spitball a few things

Norm in my opinion was always at his best when he was in a room with people who hate his guts. Many of these jokes were edgy enough to get him in trouble but not so edgy that it’s hateful. I wish she had the time to perform the set live because it would be incredible with half of the audience booing him.

Norm has always been the biggest clown in the room, but there’s a brief moment where you see how serious he took his craft. About halfway through the special, one of his dogs starts barking for a moment. The character he creates would make you think that he would get distracted or make a mention about it, but for a brief moment he broke character. He was completely unfazed. For a few seconds we got to see that everything he’s ever done on stage has been on purpose.

I laughed a lot. It also made me sad. There are some moments he talked about things like mortality where you realize he understands his time is limited.

Like I said I don’t really have a format for this. I just know that I really enjoyed this and I will be watching it again.

GREAT set, emotional yes, but GREAT set

As a big fan of Normie, I was eagerly waiting for the drop of this set. Norm had hoped to get back to stand up once Corona was done, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Norm shot this special at home in his mind practice for a set in front of an audience.

The material is classic Norm; you go from laughing non stop to feeling emotional and crying. We as the audience can tell he was struggling in pain, he talks in detail more about death and what will or could happen.

The show has a thirty minute I want to say ” post show, ” but Netflix isn’t calling it that, more of a analysis of Norm’s life; Sandler, Spade, Molly Shannon , Letterman and Dave Chappelle share moments about Norm.

This is definitely a special you need to watch more than once as there are small things you will miss between viewings.

Love ya Normie, Rest in Peace.

Beautiful

I was waiting eagerly for this, knowing full well it would probably invoke way more tears than laughs.

Norm’s one of the greats, and what I love about him is his unique comedy style that the majority doesn’t even get. He didn’t move much on stage, nor did he do crowd work, so I expected this to be good despite the terrible conditions – no crowd, recorded on a webcam…

I can’t imagine how difficult it was for him knowing this was probably his last work, and recording it in a lonely studio, even though millions of people would’ve killed to be his audience.

You can’t really judge this as a generic stand-up special, it should be pretty obvious it’s not. It’s more like a traditional work of art, that’s high in value thanks to its backstory and uniqueness.

Don’t be snotty little brats about it. Try to experience this in a more elevated way than just sitting on your behind and waiting for laughs. Try to put yourself in his shoes, or empathising with his fans – what do they feel, you think? Can you think? Or empathise? Can you not judge this as shallowly as possible?

If you can’t, skip it. He was never for everyone.

My only gripe with this is that Netflix just had to Netflix-ize it, by turning the second half into a cliche, making it about the usual Netflix-approved people. Chappelle, two American show hosts nobody outside of the US cares about, obligatory random female comic, David Spade for some reason, etc. Chappelle had some good anecdotes, and so did Sandler, but the rest we could’ve gone without. God forbid Netflix brings Rob Schneider, Mike Tyson, Seth MarFarlane or any of the other people Norm actually worked with in the last 10 years. Nah, it’s gotta be the now-obligatory Chappelle, some late night hosts, and random obligatory female who has nothing to say. I’m surprised they didn’t also drag in Pete Davidson for no reason, like Netflix does in everything else too. So despite this being a generic Netflix exploitation, at least Norm’s last set got to see the light of day.
