Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer Movie Reviews
A very low bar
An odd show. Full of non-jokes and lecturey bits. I was surprised, kept thinking it was going to get better.
Didn’t like the strip show piece, the jealous husband spying on his own wife and low grade snipes at trans, handicapped, doing drugs with his son. The rare funny bit got a laugh but on the whole there was a nasty edge to the humour and a wandering focus with him smoking on stage and abandoning the audience at one point to change his clothes. If I’d paid for a ticket I’d have been annoyed and some annoyed audience members were quite visible.
He seemed oddly braggy too, as in anyone can be him.
I’d pass.
2/10.
Worst one in awhile
I’m a huge Chappelle fan but this was really mediocre. There were actually very few jokes in the show and most of it was him telling his life stories. I think his stories have value and I do appreciate them but this is a comedy special and the laughs, some of them good, were few and far between. The last 20 mins of the show are him telling one story which he preps you for. And again while very thought provoking and a great story it’s not really funny. As he’s getting older he is shifting in to more preachy, kind of like Chris Rock, and less about laughs. The material is probably better for a book. Also he needs to stop the habit of hitting the microphone on his knee and walking around laughing.
What the hell was that ending?
In general this was an ok set by Chappelle, maybe a bit half-hearted and repetitive but still better than most of the garbage out there that passes for stand-up comedy.
But then it came to the finale, a 15-minute bit about… errr… not sure what exactly? Dreams? Being a dreamer? Something about Russian mobsters and Lil Nas X? Where was he even going with this?
Turns out it was nothing more than a self-aggrandizing monologue that lacked humour and humility. He really seems to have developed something of a God complex and his shows are suffering for it.
It’s a pretty spectacular drop from being arguably the best in the world at his profession to this. Like I say, it’s still better than most comedy but, by the standards he has set, this is a huge fall in grace.
