Arbitrage Storyline

Writer Nicholas Jarecki makes his feature directorial debut with this drama centering on a Wall Street hedge-fund tycoon and family man who scrambles to maintain a picture-perfect facade as his empire slowly begins to topple behind the scenes. Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is about to turn 60. One of the most successful businessmen in New York City, he lives a life of luxury that few will ever experience. But there’s a storm coming, and nobody knows it better than Robert. If he can finalize the bank purchase of his trading empire before any evidence of his shady business dealings is unearthed, there’s a chance he could emerge relatively unscathed. Not even Robert’s wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) or their astute daughter Brooke (Brit Marling) have any idea of the hole their family patriarch has dug, but they are about to be swallowed up by it as well. At the crucial moment when his plan falls apart, however, a deadly complication leaves Robert with no choice but to seek the help of shady Jimmy Grant (Nate Parker), a man the wealthy financier never expected to see again. Just when it seems the situation couldn’t get any worse, NYPD detective Michael Bryer (Tim Roth) realizes he may have uncovered a key piece of evidence that will ensure Robert pays for his sins.

good tense thriller

Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is a successful financial businessman with a loving wife and a smart daughter on the surface. But under the surface, the business is nothing but one big fraud. His marriage to his wife (Susan Sarandon) has gone completely cold. And his daughter (Brit Marling) is in the dark. Robert is desperate to sell his worthless company before they arrest him for fraud. His personal life gets even worst when he crashes his car.

The tension builds when the car crash happens and he is forced to ask for help. Before that, it was a bit too slow. The acting is solid. It’s a nice little thriller.

OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE

It is always nice to get out while you are on top, before you are caught with your finger in the pie. This is what a dishonest, cheating Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is attempting to do. This is a semi-crime drama that comes at you rather fast with no time for character build up. Robert Miller is unlikeable, but the film doesn’t build character for anyone else. I found myself rooting for minor characters who are more honest than Miller, but not puritanical.

Brit Marling as the overly smart daughter played a convincing role, but Susan Sarandon as the wife did not have the lines she needed to excel. The individual scene dialouge was predictable. The film is more of a crime drama with the financial empire and deals being part of the background dealings setting up Gere’s character.

Might be worth watching once. A film you will forget an hour after you have seen it. Not a keeper.

Common sense

It’s always tough when you have a lead character like the one portrayed by Richard Gere here. But he plays is with such a finesse, that his powerful performance has the intended effect. While his actions (most of them) seem logic, it’s not always easy to actually stay behind them and approve of them.

There’s also the other players who help elevate this. Be it the antagonist (for our protagonist), his wife (there’s a very powerful scene) and one “special friend”. The latter has a tough job, because he has to be convincing in his believes and why he does what he does. I don’t want to spoil anything more, because it’s a guessing game, especially towards the end.

While it starts slowly, the movie picks up pace and it does remain suspenseful until the end.
