Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva Storyline

In 2018 a string of tragedies unfolded in Northeastern Nevada. A woman was found dead and another would vanish along the same stretch of remote highway. Could these events be linked to the 2017 disappearance of outdoorsman Gary Hinge?

Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva Movie Reviews

Arresting Realism of the Characters

Having watched the first installment, “Horror in the High Desert 1”, and being swept away by the realism of the people involved, I in fact thought I was watching a documentary. Dutch Marich has a genius for casting. The actors in “Minerva” were just as good as in Part One. They were utterly believable as real people being interviewed and relating their stories, just as the victims appeared to be living their lives and capturing moments on their phones, very realistic and convincing. These small towns in the desert are great locations for this kind of film and there is some beautiful footage of the desert. If you are a horror fan, these film are quite unsettling and will at times put you on the edge of your seat.

Not as enjoyable as the first

I enjoyed the first ‘Horror in the high Desert’. It was a little slow but the ending sequence was well done and made the wait worth it. ‘Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva’ however didn’t work for me. It was equally slow but I never felt like the pay-off justified it.

Found footage is always a tricky genre to get right, because it’s so crucial that the audience buys in. I try and make the effort to always buy in, however it can sometimes be harder than other times. The interviews in this movie felt very fake. Camera angles and candid shots that would never be filmed or used are in almost every scene. It can be quite distracting.

I was disappointed I didn’t enjoy this one. Others seem to be thoroughly enjoying it, so I can’t help but wonder whether a second watch would be worth a try. It looks like there will be more sequels in the future too so I will still check those out when they come along. This one wasn’t for me though. 3/10.

Gets you from the start! Also, THE SEQUEL HAPPENED

In my review of the first one, I said a sequel was definitely set up. No one believed me. Another review even called me out, saying a sequel would never happen.

Well: TOLD YA SO!

If you liked or loved the first movie, you’ll probably enjoy this one too. But if you didn’t care for the first one, or didn’t like the slow burn nature of it, don’t write this off.

The ‘action’ starts a lot more quickly, and the footage becomes very unsettling very quickly. Like the first film, the acting is hit or miss. Thankfully there are more hits than misses. I found myself caring about Minerva and wanting to find out about what happened to her a lot more than the protagonist of the first film, but there are still some great connections to the first film (for example the same reporter character comes back)!

Most importantly: there are more scary moments and unsettling moments than the first movie. It seems the filmmakers definitely listened to the complaints regarding lack of action and pacing.

Do yourself a favor and check it out–before the third one comes out!
