Joy Ride Storyline

From the producers of Neighbors and the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians, JOY RIDE stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar® nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery centers on four unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s (Ashley Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Sherry Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Stephanie Hsu), her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

Joy Ride Movie Reviews

Four friends. One trip. No laughs.

I can’t believe I am saying this, but I’ve found not one, but four Asian women who are less funny and more annoying than Awkwafina: the quartet at the centre of this loud, crass and painfully dumb ‘comedy’ from first-time director Adele Lim, who really should consider a different career… anything but directing films.

Ashley Park plays lawyer Audrey, who travels from America to China to try and seal an important business deal; she is accompanied by her best friend Lolo (Sherry Cola) and socially awkward Deadeye (Sabrina Wu). Once in China, they are joined by soap actress Kat (Stephanie Hsu), and the four women go on a crazy road trip that involves sex, drugs and spring rolls.

Park, Cola, Hsu and Wu are about as funny as a chopstick in the eye, not one scene in this train wreck of a movie making me laugh. It’s really lowest-common-denominator garbage, with gags about hiding cocaine up the rectum, vomiting, blow jobs, vaginal tattoos and three-way sex, which might have possibly worked if anyone involved had the slightest semblance of comedic talent. This lot, however, equate being funny with shouting loudly, and it’s extremely grating on the nerves.

1/10. The worst film I have seen this year, and there’s been some stiff competition, so that’s no mean feat.

“I’m coming in juicy”

In summary, the plot consists of friends going on a trip to Asia, having an adventure, while emotional weight of their failures finally causes the friendship to crack open! But, predictably, they all come out better in the end.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you know exactly what to expect! Maybe leaning a little too much into obscenity’s and sex-themed content to keep the viewer’s attention. And while it was nice to see the “required” emotional highpoint that is designed to thug at you work for a second after a few scenes of build-up! It’s sadly drowned in the deafening noise that is everything else.. I don’t think there was a memorable scene for me, a decent line of dialogue I liked, or joke that landed or anything truly enjoyable/rewatchable. It is certainly loud and people in it are all “crazy and fun” like no one is in reality.. but its content is too safe and expected, I feel like I’ve seen this a couple of times before.

Surprised to see this hitting theaters, as it is the most direct-to-streaming film I’ve seen in recent years. It’s not annoying enough to deserve a lower score, and it’s not badly produced. Still, can’t recommend anyone pay money for it..

Went Downhill

I was super excited to see this. It looked so funny and I was interested in seeing Asian actors on screen doing their thing.

Like others said, the acting wasn’t all that great overall. The funniest parts were in the trailer.

I did laugh at parts. But the oversexed scenes were cringe and felt like reaching way down in the barrel.

I enjoyed a lot of the sex references, but could have done without the sex scenes and I’m no prude. Lolo;s references were very funny.

But the 3-way, just ugh. And the other scene with the ball would have been a lot funnier cut short, but went on just too long. A lot of it seemed so contrived and the p* tattoo was much funnier as a reference. We didn’t need to actually see it.

Sometimes just telling is much funnier than showing. Let the audience laugh at the idea.

I really, really, really wanted to like this, but yeah the reviews are right.
