Marisol Movie Reviews

Gripping Drama

Esmeralda Camargo plays Marisol, a high school student who has just received a letter informing her that she is receiving a $7,000 scholarship towards college.

A best friend invites her to a party and it all heads downhill from there. A fight breaks out and Marisol accidently injures a boy with some fireworks. The kid goes on a racist tangent and posts messages on a anti-immigrant website.

Marisol discovers that she is undocumented, and fearing deportation, she hits the road with a modern underground railroad. One major plot hole is the mysterious and unexplained abscence of her mother.

Camargo is excellent in the lead role and makes the film worth a viewing.

This felt rather realistic…

Needless to say that I had never even heard about this 2023 drama titled “Marisol” prior to stumbling upon it by random chance. And with it being a movie that I hadn’t already seen, of course I opted to sit down and give the movie a chance.

Writer Claire Audrey Aguayo put together a fair enough script, though I doub that “Marisol” is going to be a movie that will find an appeal with everyone in the audience, as it can be somewhat of an acquired taste to sit through a slow paced drama such as this. The storyline was actually interesting and I liked how writer Claire Audrey Aguayo didn’t paint a rose colored image where everything turned out fine and dandy, so there was a good sense of realism to the storyline, which definitely helped the overall movie in my opinion.

Something that really worked out in the movie was the acting performances. The actors and actresses put on very natural and realistic acting performances, which made the viewing experience all the more intense and real. I was not familiar with leading actress Esmeralda Camargo, but she really carried the movie quite nicely. There wasn’t a single actor or actress on the cast list here that I was familiar with, and that was something I enjoyed.

I found “Marisol” to be a nice movie, though it is not a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time, solely because the storyline just doesn’t have the contents to support more than a single viewing. But I will say that I found the movie to be well-worth sitting down and spending 91 minutes on watching.

My rating of director Kevin Abrams’ 2023 drama “Marisol” lands on a six out of ten stars.
