God Is a Bullet Movie Reviews

Nothing of value, lol all the 10star reviews

Tons of plot holes and amateur film making mistakes, and this is from a director with tons of flicks under his belt. Some of them are good even, but this is straight up trash.

Gore just for the sake of shocking the audience, not much in the way of a story, just about as simple as it gets, revenge. Atrocious dialogue for most of the bloated nearly 2 hour film. Unbelievable scenes where the lead actors just stumble upon key characters without much effort. It’s like this movie was written by a child in a small town, and everyone knows everyone and where they’re going to be.

Lame and it just gets worse and worse until the ending where the audience just shakes their head and sighs.

1/10. Can’t recommend. I had some high hopes for the actors after the first 15 minutes, then everything just goes bonkers.

Sluggishly disappointing, far fetched (for a true tale), hole-filled crime thriller

Despite its fine (tho under-rated) two leads, and its noted writer/director Nick Cassavetes, crime thriller “God Is A Bullet” is a sluggish disappointment. When cop Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s ex-wife (and her husband) are killed & teen daughter kidnapped by Karl Glusman’s evil demonic cult (including Ethan Suplee), ex-cult member Maika Monroe (strong again) helps him track them to Mexico to get the daughter back (helped by Jamie Foxx). Tho an apparently true tale it seems far fetched, simplistic, hole-filled, and a tad repetitive & slow. While nowhere near matching the best of those involved (like Coster-Waldau’s similarly toned “Shot Caller”) it’s still just about watchable.

A Story Completely Void Of Cohesion. This Bullet Definitely Misses It’s Mark. And There’s No Shot It’s Based On True Events.

Plain and simply…this film is an incohesive mess.

The problem is not the concept…it’s the characters…the writing…the flow.

Pretty much everything else.

The characters are over the top in the worst possible way.

By no means are they disturbing to the point of discomfort.

They are just annoying.

Everything starts off well enough.

But by the time the halfway point rolls around…things have progressed to the point of absolute stupidity.

The plot that is as implausible as the claim that the story is “based on true events”.

There’s just no shot that’s true.

The pseudonymous author of the book on which this film is based, claims the story is based on his real life experiences.

But anyone with half a brain can tell they’ve been introduced into the narrative, so as to fraudulently give the book a sense of realism, around which it was then marketed.

The whole thing is eerily reminiscent to the first season of True Detective, with a little Natural Born Killers, and Taken, thrown into the mix.

Unfortunately…it’s a complete mess.

On one hand, the whole thing becomes too philosophical.

While the action and gore- and search for his daughter, itself- seem take second fiddle.

When there is action…it plays out in a completely absurd manner.

Normally, I wouldn’t take issue with philosophicality of a film.

But it’s just done so poorly here.

And messes with the flow of the film.

Which makes it really hard to keep engaged with.

When there are action scenes…the gore really stands out.

But they always feel out of place.

Like they were randomly inserted in places for no reason.

With no real context.

While the soundtrack inserted into these scenes never seem to vibe.

Making the whole thing come off as a poorly planned hodgepodge of loosely thrown together events.

Which tend to lose you more and more as the film progresses.

What’s most alienating, I think, is the development of Waldau’s character- Bob Hightower.

It’s just such a 180.

And just doesn’t come off as either plausible or believable.

Not only does his entire demeanour change…but the drive to find his daughter- around which the entire plot is based- is practically indiscernable throughout most of the film.

It’s all just one, long, incoherent mess.

Which is not something I would expect coming from the pedigree of someone like Nick Cassavetes.

Apparently…the original runtime was 156 minutes.

But the version I watched was exactly 120 minutes.

So, it’s possible someone- other than Cassavetes- has butchered this into the cinematic tragedy it really is.

I’m not sure.

But as it currently stands.

It’s just not a good film.

As it’s plagued with too many issues, that are too hard to ignore.

Which is a tragedy in itself…because it starts off with so much promise!

Unfortunately, the complete lack of cohesion makes this one bullet that has definitely missed it’s mark.

So it gets a hard pass from me.

2 out of 10.
