Confinement Movie Reviews

A well-shot low budget Canadian indie sci-fi film.

This is editor turned newb director Benjamin Duffield’s first full length feature film, written by actor Robert Higden in his first full length feature screenplay, and I must say, for newb filmmakers, this was a well shot film that will captivate you and hold your attention.

Although the premise is sci-fi, there’s a little sappy romance thrown in, of which blends in nicely. The 77 min runtime flew by, even with the somewhat slow pacing. I would’ve liked to have seen more substance and/or some sub-plots, as well as some action thrown into the story, as that would’ve elevated this film to a higher level. I will say that the story is still unique in many ways, and certainly thought-provoking.

The cinematography and setting/landscapes were on point, and the score spot-on for a low budget B-film. The S/VFX were well done for a low budget. The performances were great, although I wasn’t keen on the narrated voice. It was portraying Darwin, but clearly there was no way that would ever be his voice. Had they actually used Darwin’s voice, it would’ve made a huge difference for the better. For that matter, even the dialogue and voice could’ve been better for the “World Authority”. Overall a decent and entertaining watch, especially if you’re a post-apocalyptic-sci-fi film fan. It’s a well deserved 7.5/10 rounded up to 8 for the new filmmakers. Hopefully they take advantage of the potential for a Part 2.

Slow and boring

The opening scene is trying to establish how horrible life is for these people. They work and slave doing stuff like remote digging using drone bulldozers. Yawn. The movie never gets past this level of excitement. It is all downhill from there.

So tell me, if these people live this sort of life why is their hair styled, clean and modern? I mean, this guy and his hair is like styled like a BTS performer. He looks like he is pretty well off. Sure, he look sad, but that’s just terrible directing. I don’t see the story for what it is supposed to be projecting.

I would expect to see something where people have to fight to live, fight just to have a job, where is the conflict? Where is the struggle? There is none. The guy has everything he would need to function. He even has social media. Instant gratification.

Excellent science fiction

I would suppose this has a low rating because it’s cerebral fiction and doesn’t have enough action/adventure to appease today’s adrenaline junkies. Further, zero bad language, no nudity, no violence. Most unusual for a post-apocalyptic sci fi film

This film has a great premise, good writing, good directing, good acting, music, and great use of limited scenery. A slow-burner for sure, but post-apocalyptic doesn’t have to be Mad Max. Sometimes it’s just people adapting.

I can’t got into the strengths and weaknesses without spoilers, so suffice to say that the plot generally makes good, logical sense. Some people complain about ‘missing information’ but they haven’t thought through the concept of a war that destroyed most of humanity, the remaining government trying to retain a viable workforce / civilization (as meager as it is), and survivors just trying to get by day to day (without going on sadistic rampages).

On the downside, the movie would have been better without narration… giving the audience a chance to figure a few things out. One doesn’t have to know all the background details to understand the life the characters have been thrown in to. Remove the narration, it would have been a better, more immersive film.

This is a movie about people adapting to the needs of everyday life and discovering more about that life as time passes. Science fiction isn’t always about giant robots and planet-conquering aliens. Sometimes great science fiction is just about people.
