Improvisiert und zielbewusst Movie Reviews

A great documentary on the makers of Cinema Novo

Here’s a fascinating documentary about the Cinema Novo (“Brazilian New Wave”) and the directors who contributed with the movement. Director Joaquim Pedro de Andrade made this piece for German TV and what a brilliant and well explained project this is. Here are gathered famous directors Leon Hirszman, Glauber Rocha, Carlos Diegues, Domingos Oliveira, Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Arnaldo Jabor while all of them are composing and creating their future masterpieces. Besides the interviews with them, showing their views on cinema and film, we follow some of them while shooting their films or in some cases visiting sponsors, collecting funds for their movies.

For those who don’t know much about Cinema Novo this film is a perfect introductory guide counting with the presence of its most notable artists and their magnificent creations with films such as “Terra em Transe”, “Rio 40 Graus”, “Garota de Ipanema” among others. Their views and thoughts are all interesting to follow and see. It shows Brazilian cinema as one of the most creative and interesting of the world, and it gives us the sense we had amazing creators who were fully commited in presenting a different and unique cinema experience to audiences, with more artistic views, more freedom of creativity and a new aesthetic. Camera on the hand and an idea on the head was their motto and with such they created masterpieces, defined an era and were important and inspiritional to several generations of filmmakers to come. A must-see! 9/10.
