Tailor Movie Reviews

Tailor made.

Left breathless from the astonishing Bangla Surf Girls (2021-also reviewed),I decided to continue my viewings at the WOW Film Festival, by going to get a suit from a tailor.

View on the film:

Finding the bank pulling away the lone thread which has kept his life together, Dimitris Imellos gives a mesmerizing performance as Nikos, with Imellos’s rubbery facial features emphasizing the quirky comedic side of Nikos, who even when faced with blunt criticism from customers over clothes, carries himself with a confident awareness that he has an eye for perfection.

Wearing the knowledge that if he fails the family business will go under, the screenplay by co-writer (with Tracy Sunderland) /director Sonia Liza Kenterman takes a witty anthology approach to Nikos, that go from family drama with his ill dad and comedic Melodrama when a bride is less then thrilled with his ideas for her dress, to the pure slap-stick of Nikos trying to sell his expensive fashion at a weekend market.

Whilst the attempt to put all the plot threads together for the final costume just missing the mark, due to an inability to firmly decide in wrapping the ending on a comedic, or dramatic note, director Kenterman makes her feature film debut backed by a wonderfully playful score from Nikos Kypourgos, and cinematographer Giorgos Mihelis lacing Nikos sharp suits with pristine close-ups, that are balanced to hilarious push-ins & close-ups of Nikos scrambling to get a sale, which are tailored to perfection.

Trying to fit in

And to survive that is – also finding ones own path – in life and in so many other ways that are connected to our existence on this planet. May have gone a bit overboard with the last statemen, but let me be clear: the movie is as slow paced as you can imagine. Our main character is not really forward when it comes to talking – which is not helping much when it comes to his business dealings and how he is being handled by others.

Since the bank wants to take away their business, father and son have to find a way to keep their business open. And while the father soon has a different stroke of bad luck (no pun intended), the son is left to handle things on his own. Well he will get some unexpected help by some neighbors … and from time to time strangers on the street – literally.

This drama shows many aspects of a society that can not take care of their own people. Of an economic system that has failed the people it is supposed to serve. It shows human instinct to survive and it shows love and tenderness … and it shows that even gullible people have a chance … with a bit of luch and the right people on their side. If they also have a bit of talent that is. And a passion for what they do.

There is a lot woven into this – and I am almost surprised I took so long to incorporate another pun in here. This one was almost tailor made … it suits me, is what I am saying. Hopefully you’ll feel the same when you try it on.
