Railways Storyline
Hajime is in line to be the next head of a prominent electronics company. He toils day and night over his work and has no time for his family. But one day, his mother in Shimane falls ill, and his best friend dies in an accident. Grief-stricken, Hajime returns home, where memories of his childhood dream come back to him. He had always wanted to be a train conductor and drive the local “bataden” Ichibata Electric Railway.

Railways Movie Reviews
A slow train but of high quality
The movie itself is like a slow train…it moves very very slowly (yes a slow pace), but it is a wonderful slice of life story as it emphasizes that life has to go forward, in a positive way, just like a train on its railway, no matter what the diversion of paths, or changes in priorities in life due to circumstances it encounters.
Also, like a train, the main character still strives to make a positive impact on people surrounding him. Another thing to note is there is no over-the-top sequences in its drama. Although there are some clichéd parts noted, the really touching moments offset the weaknesses mentioned. A well made movie.
My view
This is a film about people and their childhood dreams and making a decision on living them out later in life. What’s more important, it is a true story.
It’s not a cinematic masterpiece. It gets down to traumas and triumphs of people’s lives. It does delve into some detail into Japanese lives, drive and emotions. I find it a compelling story.
It does have elements of pathos. It does have an obvious appeal to people who enjoy trains and railways.
I had seen this as a Japan film festival, but buying an English subtitled version so far eludes me. This is a deal breaker for Western Audiences.
