Viva the Underdogs Storyline
VIVA THE UNDERDOGS follows Parkway Drive’s 15-year journey from small town surf-rats to international headliners on the world’s biggest metal music festivals. From seeking out surf spots and sleeping on the streets during their first international tour, to evolving their sound and setting new benchmarks in metal with every album release, the five high school band-mates have always done it their own way. Despite the lack of mainstream support, somehow rock lives on. Dedicated heavy music festivals across the globe are still selling out, led by living legends like Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer and AC/DC giving fans live spectacles like no other. Sadly, no new bands have soared to the great heights of those pioneers, yet a changing of the guard is long overdue. A band must step up to own that headline spot and continue the legacy. Now 15 years into their career, Parkway Drive put everything on the line to create the biggest and most explosive show for their fans. Self-funded, self-managed and committing to over 100 tour stops, Parkway Drive recruit 40-plus crew members and fill six semi-trailers with cutting edge audio visual equipment and pyrotechnics but is it enough to earn their spot at the top of the world’s biggest rock festivals? Packed with a decade’s worth of behind the scenes personal footage and unprecedented access to the behind the scenes of their explosive live shows and festival appearances, Viva The Underdogs offers a candid look at Parkway Drive’s journey and all the good times, battles, triumphs and sacrifices they make as they take on the music industry.

Viva the Underdogs Movie Reviews
Pretentious band bio
Could have been a 30 minute DVD bonus on their new album, there is nothing objective about this “bio” and the band comes off as very pretentious. I am a fan of metal bands and Aussie bands but not particularly this band, and this did nothing to sway me.
From Byron Bay to Wacken
Parkway Drive have risen from humble beginnings in the NSW town of Byron Bay to become arguably Australia’s biggest metal band.
This documentary chronicles their “Reverence” album tour towards the highest of highs: headlining the legendary Wacken festival in 2019.
A word of warning: “Viva the Underdogs” (named after the lyrics from their 2012 song “Wild Eyes”) isn’t for Parkway novices. While there’s a little bit of backstory, this documentary focuses on the road to Wacken. There’s other Parkway docos to fill in the gaps for new fans.
Also, Parkway fans hoping for a greatest hits catalogue here will be disappointed, as the majority of live songs are from their most recent albums.
This documentary shows how far Parkway have come, with their stage shows becoming more and more elaborate, with a lot of pyrotechnics.
Because of this, the Parkway boys are still anxious about losing money and the various things that can go wrong with the elaborate set up.
While there’s a lot of ‘what could go wrong now’ drama, it’s all worth it for the final 20 minutes at Wacken, which is spectacular: it’s a shame the whole set wasn’t released as a companion piece, as Parkway fans would’ve eaten it up.
ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC-RELATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME
Parkway Drive, once again, prove to do things right. This movie is moving, compelling, mind-blowing and incredibily compacted; for those who don’t know the band, it will definitely be a stir. Film directed as if it was an action film based on real life; the four Australian knights, carrying sufferings and sacrifices, friendship and decication, find their way through the crowds all over the world, conquering everything that passes on their path and defining a new type of band, so a new type of sound. Film that leaves tears in your eyes, that leaves you speechless, that foments musicians and creates new ones. Simply a masterpiece.
