Just for the Summer Storyline

Having then dated but not seen each other since high school, middle school teacher Penelope Campbell and investment banker Jason Humphrey are staying with their respective grandmothers for the summer, Grandmas Dot and Josie not only friends but lakeside next door neighbors. Pen’s visit is largely for Dot’s milestone seventy-fifth birthday celebration, while Jason, at a crossroads in his life, wanted an escape to a place with happier memories. Outwardly, it seems like Dot and Josie’s respective missions this summer are to find a boyfriend/girlfriend for Pen/Jason, they setting the two up on one “accidental” meeting with the opposite sex after another, including with each other. Neither Pen or Jason are in any position for a relationship this summer, let alone with each other especially as there are still some hurt feelings from that time in high school. Not wanting to tell anyone just yet, Pen has to make changes to her novel manuscript – this her first – her editor Liam having gotten her a conditional publication deal on those changes being approved, this after a series of rejections from other publishers. In addition to the imminent publisher set deadlines, Pen has a special want to have the final changes approved – if they are ever approved – by the time of Dot’s birthday. And one of the issues with which Jason is currently dealing is an emotionally difficult break-up. As such, Jason comes up with a plan that Pen eventually agrees with to get their grandmothers to stop setting them up: they should “fake” date for the summer, their time together which would allow Pen to make the changes to her manuscript, and Jason to embark on his major summer project of fixing up Josie’s broken sailboat. What Pen and Jason don’t know is that they are playing into exactly what Dot and Josie had planned, the wanted outcome if Pen and Jason will only allow themselves to open up to the other and not make what may be incorrect assumptions of what is best for the other.

Just for the Summer Movie Reviews

Funnier than some – series potential

Fake dating plots aren’t original but this is funnier than some. Whilst there needs to be a certain amount of awkwardness in this scenario, I think having more natural moments would have increased the rewatchability – I felt the pairing was less convincing at the end and lost a bit of momentum. However, I would like to see a sequel where they are more settled as a couple and helping each other with their creative projects, because that was the best scene. It’s quite a big cast with a big age range, so there’d even be potential for a family TV series.

Fake dating

This common premise of a fake relationship to make the meddling grandmas back off has nothing special going for it. A little chemistry between the leads, mediocre dialogue and zero tension. The climax is, you guessed it, anticlimactic precipitated after no conflict .

Snoozefest…

I couldn’t even finish it and I love cheesy romantic movies. It was boring, the leads had no chemistry between them and the female protagonist seemed bored and like she didn’t want to be a part of the movie.
