Daybreakers Storyline

10 years from now, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires’ food supply – human blood – is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society’s needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form.

Daybreakers Movie Reviews

Daybreakers

The message from Daybreakers is. If vampires destroy humans they then destroy themselves as they have no blood to survive. Daybreakers has a subtext which could be about environmental destruction.

Set in the year 2019, vampires have taken over the earth after a virus. Humans are now fewer in numbers and vampire society is being damaged. Some turning into bat like subsiders attacking other vampires.

Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is a vampire with human sympathies. He is searching for a blood substitute that can be successfully used on vampires which could also save the last remnants of humanity.

A strange woman one day tells Edward that there can be a cure for vampires and he meets Lionel ‘Elvis’ Cormac (Willem Dafoe) a former vampire.

Daybreakers tries to break out of its B movie roots with a better acting cast. Sam Neill lends class along with Hawke and Dafoe. It starts out as a moody piece which has a gory final act. At least it tries to do something different in the crowded vampire genre by having a thoughtful approach.

Predictable but engaging futuristic vampire thriller

DAYBREAKERS is a vampire movie with a twist – in this film, most of society ARE vampires, and humans are in the minority. The plot involves a good-guy vampire scientist uncovering a conspiracy involving the supply of human blood running low and the search for substitutes to replace it.

So far, so predictable; part of me sighs when I see yet another futuristic society/conspiracy/bad corporation type film, with almost exactly the same look and feel as the likes of UNDERWORLD, EQUILIBRIUM, AEON FLUX, BLADE, ULTRAVIOLET etc. DAYBREAKERS is much the same style of movie, but the fact that most of the cast are vampires does make it slightly different from the norm.

The plot is the usual action-focused guff, but it proves to be quite entertaining and surprisingly so in places. Ethan Hawke I usually find to be one of Hollywood’s blandest leading men, but he acquits himself admirably with the leading role here, albeit the fact that not much is required from him. Willem Dafoe is Willem Dafoe, the usual professional whatever the role, and there’s a nice turn from Sam Neill as the corporate bad guy.

One of the aspects I liked most about this film was the vampire action. With the vampire-friendly likes of TWILIGHT currently drawing in the masses at the multiplexes, it’s refreshing to see a film where vampires are ugly, where they burn, explode and die messily. Predictable, yes, but fun with it. By the time the credits roll and we’ve seen the umpteenth twist, it’s all become faintly ridiculous, but I liked DAYBREAKERS for being a straightforward, fast-paced thriller of a movie.

Great ideas but need better execution

It’s the year 2019 and the world has been taken over by vampires. Humans are being farmed for their blood, but there are fewer and fewer of them. Vampires turn feral when they don’t get human blood. So the dwindling human race have real devastating consequences. Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is a vampire, but he’s searching for a blood substitute. He wants to save the human race. That’s why the humans want his help for the ultimate cure.

The concept is terrific. The execution lacks the required intensity. While it has great ideas, the movie just doesn’t have the pace or the action to sustain it. Ideas are not enough. This movie needs better hands to squeeze more excitement out of the script.

The big acting names in this are Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill. They give the movie instant credibility that’s more than its B-movie roots. However to justify that credibility, they need to increase the drama.
