Friday the 13th Part 2 Storyline

After killing Mrs. Voorhees who was avenging her son Jason’s death, Alice Hardy can finally sigh with relief. But there is just one problem: Jason never drowned at Camp Crystal Lake and lived in the nearby woods as a hermit all this time. The day that Alice beheaded his mother, Jason saw everything and his heart was filled with a thirst for revenge. Two months later, Alice gets stabbed by an ice pick in the temple and vanishes. Is Jason behind this? Five years later, a camp next to Camp Crystal Lake is built and the counselors start snooping around the old, abandoned camp ruins. This makes Jason very upset, since his shack is next to the remains of Camp Crystal Lake and what is inside the shack shall be kept secret forever – even if it means killing nine people.

Friday the 13th Part 2 Movie Reviews

Quickie sequel delivers the goods

The first sequel was quickly churned out (only a year later) after the first Friday the 13th film proved to be a success. However, PART 2 has only a little of the atmosphere (generally created through fear of the unknown) that the original had, mainly because we all know this time around that the killer is Jason. Our killer doesn’t wear the iconic hockey mask here but instead a sack on his head which makes him resemble the murderer in THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN.

On the plus side, the film has slicker production values which give it a much richer, glossier look, but apart from that its just another run of the mill slasher clone with a thin plot and lots of bloody murders. This time around the murders are not so varied or that bloody, and a couple (the machete in the face, the double spear-impaling) are directly lifted from that Mario Bava classic, BAY OF BLOOD. The rest of the film is full of the clichéd teen character skinny-dipping and arm-wrestling, the usual activities. There are lots of clichés in the film from the old jumping cat scare to the mysterious phone call.

There were two parts of the film I really liked; the part where the heroine takes a chainsaw to Jason (although in a fit of stupidity she immediately drops the chainsaw instead of finishing him off), and the ending which threatens to be sentimental, but had a further shock. The acting this time around is even worse than in the first film, with all the characters being bland and emotionless, and nobody you care about. Even the lead, Amy Steel, is not as fleshed-out as Adrienne King was. The make-up case done on Jason is pretty good though and he looks much like you would expect, having grown up into a man from the first film but still being the same old deformed weirdo we all know and love.

In memory of Steve Dash (1944-2018)…

This film launched the career of this actor, who was the first to play Jason Voorhees. Scenes from the first film are shown before the logo appears. Then the film starts. The debut of Jason is a classic among horror fans. The hockey mask won’t make its debut until the 3d sequel came out a year later.

A step forward.

I wonder, do people who rate these movies on IMDB and rotten tomatoes review these “objectively” or subjectively as their personal friday the 13th film? No one I’ve ever seen on youtube that is a fan of this series says part 1 and 2 are the best yet they are the top ranked on IMDB and part 1 is the only movie fresh in the series on rotten tomatoes.

With this said, this movie is definitely better than the first movie but still has some issues. The movie has more nudity and is way more bloody (the kills AND effects are improved as well) which for me is a positive this movie has over the last one. The movie also moves faster than the last movie and is shorter by 8 minutes. The characters are usually what you can expect from a Friday the 13th movie but this time they seem a bit more (ahem) “attractive” and I’m not saying that because of the added nudity in this movie. Jason is in this movie but the movie still tries to use the POV camera for some “mystery” aspect even tho Jason mostly has a bag on his face anyways so why they used it here is beyond me. Jason also sadly seems weak and even foolish, he literally breaks a chair while he tries to kill someone and almost gets caught by a police officer because he runs in the streets. Muffin was also at some point killed in the woods by jason (why did the police officer notice the kids but not the dog that is literally near them ripped up?) yet somehow comes back near the end which gives away the fact that another Jason jumpscare is just another dream which is a good thing in a way since Jason looks super weird with that hair and beard. The music is still pretty good as well. I like how they at least explain what happened in the first movie in at least a minute for those who didn’t see it and it kind of ties in with this movie. I also think the moment of the girl being so scared under the bed that she wets herself was also pretty stupid and unnecessary. Despite what I’ve said, this movie is still an improvement over the last movie but it isn’t as fun as the some other movies in the franchise. So finally, Is it good as a stand alone? Yes, it is pretty fun to watch but is it good as a Friday the 13th movie? Kinda, it is better than the first movie but it might leave some fans disappointed that Jason isn’t really much of a beast that he is in the other movies.
