Superbeast Movie Reviews

Run through the jungle

Filmed in the Philippines, not exactly suspenseful or atmospheric; a female pathologist, Dr. Alix Pardee (Antoinette Bower), investigates the death of a mysterious, brutish man. She finds that an American scientist, Dr. Bill Fleming (Craig Littler), is engaging in strange experiments on local criminals and the failures are set loose as slow hairy targets deep in a Philippine jungle so they can be hunted down by a wealthy and sadistic rancher from Texas, Stewart Victor (Harry Lauter).

The title promises a Superbeast, which is released close to the movies finale. Guess who has developed into the creature? Of note: this is the first credited role for Ms. Bower and the last movie featuring veteran character actor Lauter. Also in the cast: Vic Diaz, Manny Ojeda and John Garwood.

Superbeast…it may have super in the title, but it most certainly is not.

I watched this movie, but it certainly did not make a lasting impression other than that it was rather boring. I think I sort of drifted in and out of sleep while watching it. Saw it on Monstervision with Joe Bob Briggs and he warned that this movie was going to be bad. Bad really is an understatement here, it is not even in the so bad it is good category like so many Italian zombie flicks like “Hell of the Living Dead” or “After Death”. The movie’s premise is sort of similar to an “Island of Dr. Moreau” which I never cared for that format of movie anyways. To make matters worse, this movie is the worst I have ever seen of that particular format. Add to that, the fact virtually nothing went on in the entire movie and it is not very memorable to boot. I seem to recall the so called superbeast of the title making an appearance near the end of the movie. Suffice to say, I do believe it was a rather brief appearance and not anything that added anything to this yawn fest. The only thing good about the whole movie was the breaks when Joe Bob would make fun of how bad the movie was. I do not even think the gang of Mystery Science Theater 3000 could have made this one tolerable to watch.

This film brought to you by the Philippine Tourist Bureau

I can’t tell you just how awful this film was, words can barely describe the shear incompetence of the filmmakers here.

The long and short of it is that a man escapes from the jungles in the Philippines, goes on a rampage on an airplane, and during his rather graphic autopsy, they find something troubling.

A cute doctor travels to where he came from, only to find herself going over a waterfall after long and pointless canoing scenes. I should point out we are going to see a lot of that here, where about 30 minutes of plot points are stretched out over 90 minutes of film.

She meets a mad scientist who is trying to cure violent behavior with drugs, because it was the 1970’s and people thought drugs could cure everything, and his buddy the rich hunter who hunts down all his failed experiments. Except the lead actress’s affect is so flat you can’t really tell what her reaction is to any of this. She objects, I guess.

The movie ends in some odd scene where the scientist is tricked into drinking his own formula and regresses into a cave man and goes on a pointless rampage because they had another 30 minutes to fill.

Ugh. Avoid at all costs.
