Athos Storyline

The Athos peninsula in Greece is one of Europe’s last secrets. Over 2000 monks live on Athos – cut off from the outside world. Access is denied to women, tourists are not welcome. Only workers and pilgrims can obtain a visa. The “Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain” attracts people who feel like they are missing something from their modern lives. With the help of three Athos monks, “Athos – A Taste of Heaven” tells the story of the island and its inhabitants in a unique filmed diary style. The film’s guiding theme is the path we as people have to find and follow – each and everyone for themselves. “First we must heal our own souls, only then we can help others”, is one of Father Galaktions core messages. He lives as a hermit on the holy mountain. Not all monks, however, live as secluded and demure as Father Galaktion. The film team is also received by Father Epiphanios – a gifted and poetic cook who certainly does not disdain the pleasures of life.

Winter in Vail Movie Reviews

A Rewarding Romance

When a hard-working L.A. event planner unexpectedly inherits a chalet in Vail, she reevaluates her life, quits her job, and moves to the resort town. Lacey Chabert plays Chelsea—who suddenly uproots her life—with her usual charm. She meets Owen (Tyler Hynes) there. He’s a soft-spoken contractor who lives by Vail’s more relaxed pace. Together they attempt to revive a portion of Vail and the restaurant run by Owen’s father.

Though its story line is mostly about following one’s dreams, the film’s romance is its most captivating aspect, thanks in large part to the appeal of Tyler Hynes. His portrayal of Owen feels genuine. This is not a film about wooing; their relationship grows organically from their mutual respect and their recognition of each other’s caring nature.

The self-fulfillment theme also works without simplifying the hard decisions that can accompany a choice between life goals and passion. This is one of the better Hallmark romances.

Winter in Vail

Lacey Chabert is my Queen of Hallmark and I think Tyler Hynes is one of the best male leads these films have, so to see them paired together excited me from the off.

This was a fab Hallmark film, with some lovely messages and moments. The two leads have good chemistry, making for an enjoyable 80+ minutes overall.

The Water Is Wide Storyline

Jeff Hephner stars as a young Pat Conroy, an idealistic young teacher who, having failed to trade his military academy education for a spot in the 1969 Peace Corps, finds a first teaching position on an isolated Sea Island off Charleston, South Carolina.Yamacraw Island (actually Daufuskie Island, now a wealthy resort location with almost no original inhabitants remaining) is an impoverished, almost all African-American spot on the Atlantic Coast with a two-room schoolhouse housing grades 1-8. The only whites on the island control the store, the library (only opened if someone wants a specific book), the post office, and the ferry to the mainland. The Blacks are subsistence farmers. Now that the local school has been merged into the larger county school district, the superintendent (Frank Langella) is attempting to provide a very unspecified “better education” for the island’s children, although he seems more impressed with Conroy’s school and parental knowledge of the rigidness of the “chain of command.”The young Conroy finds the island school a disaster. His “principal,” Mrs. Brown (Alfre Woodard), uses tough love (beatings and verbal humiliation) to teach her students “manners” but little else. The students in grades 5-8 cannot read or write, do not know which nation they live in, and have no idea of what the ocean which surrounds them is called. They know no mathematics. They do not even have any grasp of their own history.Struggling against Mrs. Brown, Assistant Superintendent Bennington (James Murtaugh), the local whites, and the Superintendent’s chain of command, Conroy brings the students to life, showing them films (which they have never seen), reading them stories, connecting them to maps, and listening to the life stories of the kids. He even manages a field trip off the island, a first for almost every child. In response the children begin to flourish, moving ahead dramatically both academically and personally, and Conroy seems to find a real mission in life. But, 1969 being much like today, the powers that be have no real interest in these poor children receiving an actual education, rather, they much prefer Mrs. Brown’s stability and lessons in compliance. In the end, Conroy is not asked to return to Yamacraw for a second year, and moves on to marriage on the mainland, and other jobs, and eventually, his career as an author.

The Water Is Wide Movie Reviews

Right on target

The Water is Wide is based on Pat Conroy’s book of the same title. It recounts a year he spent teaching African-American children on a remote barrier island off the South Carolina coast in the late 1960s. Mr. Conroy was young, naive, idealistic, and controversial. There are people still living in the South Carolina Lowcountry who regret the outcome of the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves, who will tell you that this work is fictional and unfair to the school superintendent and the black teacher. From my own experience working in Georgia schools during the same period, I know that Conroy’s observations are right on target.

It is interesting to contrast this Hallmark Hall of Fame movie with the earlier Conrack. While Conrack was contemporary reporting, this movie is more historical. Daufauskie Island (called Yamacraw in the book and both films) is fast becoming an exclusive resort community. Several generations of teachers have passed through the school and it has come under public scrutiny.

This film makes a genuine effort to look at the situation of the black teacher trying to satisfy a white administration. Alfre Woodard states that Mrs. Brown is a very unique sort of black woman that existed during that period. She plays the character with more subtlety than Madge Sinclair did. Jeff Hephner does a fine job as the idealist novice teacher in unfamiliar surroundings. He plays Conroy with less anger than Jon Voight did, but is more believable.

Very good story, but narrator annoying. Worth seeing.

Basically, this movie was great. The characters were good, the plot, the message, etc. However, I would seriously advise against using a narrator like that again. Having to hear “and she pursed her lips and smiled” while the character did just that was not adding to the movie. I would see the movie for the really interesting and nice story and try to tune out the narrator. And, a little more about the movie: It is based off a book that I have not read, but after seeing this I may It is about a school teacher who begins to teach at a small school on an island on the East coast, with primarily black children. It is set in the 60s or 70s, and the school isn’t very good. The children don’t really know much about reading and writing, and when he comes they are hard pressed to even name the country they live in. His methods are much different then those being used, and annoy the principal of the not more than 10 children school. It is about Conroy (the teacher) trying to improve the kid’s education and how they look at the world.

Why did they remake it?

This is a remake of the 1974 film “Conrack”, starring John Voight as Pat Conroy. Both films were based on Conroy’s autobiographical novel “The Water Is Wide”. The 1974 film won a special UN award from the British Actors & Film Technicians Association and the screenplay was nominated for an award by the Writers’ Guild of America. The new version, “The Water Is Wide”, shows no improvement over the original.

The story is simple and pleasant. A new, young, white, male teacher gets a job teaching the upper grades in a all-black elementary school on an island off the coast of South Carolina. The principal, who teaches the junior grades, is black. She maintains discipline by beating the children. Pat Conroy does not believe in the effectiveness of corporal punishment; instead, he wins over the class with a combination of openness, honesty, humour and tough love.

If you have not seen Conrack, then I could recommend this film, if you do not mind predictable films. One could probably predict the main developments from what I have already said, so I will say no more.

Love Lies Bleeding Storyline

Lou (Kristen Stewart) works at a hard-core gym, unclogging toilets and being pressured by Daisy (Anna Baryshnikov) for a date.Jackie (Katy O’Brian) arrives in town and has sex with JJ (Dave Franco) in order to secure a job at a gun range. She has nowhere to stay, so she sleeps and works out underneath a nearby bridge.Lou visits her sister, Beth (Jena Malone), whose house is filled with children and suffers clear signs of domestic abuse from her husband, JJ. He leaves for work where he shows Jackie around and introduces her to the owner (Ed Harris).Jackie comes to work out at the gym, and Lou is immediately smitten by her. Her fantasies are interrupted by two FBI agents asking about her father, who she says she hasn’t talked to in years. Lou and Jackie chat outside, but are interrupted by two patrons asking Jackie out on a date. She refuses, then punches one in the face after he attempts to grab her. He hits her back and Lou rushes her inside. They talk about Jackie’s dream to go to Vegas to compete in the finals for a bodybuilding competition, so Lou offers her a stash of steroids from her office. While Jackie is initially reluctant, she agrees and Lou injects her with a vial. The two are clearly attracted to each other and begin making out, then leave for Lou’s apartment to have sex.The following morning, Lou laments that Jackie’s working at the gun range, as her estranged dad, Lou Sr., owns it. Lou agrees to let Jackie stay with her, leading to a period of love, sex, and steroid injections. Back at the gun range, Lou Sr. runs a criminal operation smuggling guns to Mexico and teaches Jackie how to shoot a gun.Lou and Jackie go on an awkward double date with JJ and Beth, who has another set of bruises and cuts. Lou follows JJ to the bathroom to threaten him, but he reveals that he slept with Jackie and suggests that she’s probably just using Lou for the gym and housing. They fight on the way home, but speed away together after Lou spots the FBI agents. The following day, Lou gets a call that Beth is in the hospital with severe face and head injuries. Lou is furious, but the police will not arrest JJ unless Beth agrees to press charges, which she always refuses to do. Upon seeing Lou sobbing, Jackie’s muscles begin to swell and she flies into a rage and drives to Beth’s house to violently murder JJ. Lou spots her truck in front of Beth’s house and enters to find JJ’s body and a catatonic Jackie. After being initially horrified, Lou sets to work cleaning up the mess and puts JJ in the back of his own car. On the way to dispose of the body, Daisy spots Lou and knocks on the window of JJ’s car to chat. The girls push the car into a large gorge, then set it on fire, sending smoke billowing into the sky. Lou assures Jackie that there are other things in the gorge that will point the police to someone else, so all they need to do is stay put in the apt. While Lou cleans up Beth’s house, Jackie takes many vials of steroids and breaks out of the house to go work out, which infuriates Lou. Still hyped up on steroids, Jackie headbutts Lou and hitchhikes to Vegas for the bodybuilding competition. While her individual performance originally goes well, she has a panic attack and vomits on the stage. When she sees other competitors laughing at her, she viciously attacks them and is arrested.Lou Sr. confronts Lou at the hospital about leading police to the gorge, as it has attracted attention to the bodies that he has dumped down there. When Lou arrives home, she runs into Daisy who begins asking questions about why she was driving JJ’s car that night. In order to silence her, Lou has sex with Daisy, who then answers the phone when Jackie calls from jail and tells her not to bother them. Instead, Lou Sr. bails Jackie out of prison and claims he can help her get out of this mess. Lou has continued seeing Daisy to find out what she knows, but when they return to Lou’s house, Jackie shoots Daisy in the face, then runs. Lou hides the body behind the couch when FBI agents arrive to continue asking questions about JJ, who was one of their biggest informants on Lou Sr. They reveal they know that Lou used to be Lou Sr.’s right-hand man, so she’d have enough information to put him away. Once they leave, Lou Sr. calls to tell Lou that he has Jackie and plans to pin the double homicide on her. Lou threatens to reveal everything to the FBI if he does that, so he sends over a corrupt policeman to kill her. She knocks him out, then goes to rescue Jackie, but runs into Beth who attacks her for killing JJ. Jackie is tied up in the garage, and after initially running from Lou, they embrace and make up. Lou sends Jackie off towards the car, while she goes to confront her dad, but he arrives and shoots Lou in the leg and prepares to kill her. Jackie, empowered by her love for Lou, appears as a 60ft. woman and pins Lou Sr. to the ground. Lou puts a gun in his mouth, but decides to leave him for the incoming police. The two girls drive into the desert, but Lou hears thumping from the bed of the truck and discovers that Daisy is still alive. As Jackie sleeps, Lou strangles Daisy and drags her body into the desert.

Love Lies Bleeding Movie Reviews

A love that bleeds

Rose Glass, the visionary director behind Saint Maud, throws another punch with Love Lies Bleeding, a neo-noir crime thriller that’s both stylish and unsettling. Lou, a cautious gym manager, has her world turned upside down when she develops feelings for Jackie, a dedicated bodybuilder in Las Vegas training for a competition (Katie O’Brian). Sparks fly, but their budding romance gets entangled with Lou’s dark family secrets, propelling them down a violent path.

Love Lies Bleeding isn’t afraid to push boundaries. It evokes memories of classic thrillers like Body Double, with its neon-drenched aesthetic and underlying themes of obsession and desire. However, Glass injects a contemporary dose of female empowerment, subverting the stereotypical femme fatale trope. Jackie isn’t just a damsel in distress; she’s a complex character with her own agency, which adds a layer of intrigue to the narrative.

The film’s greatest strength lies in its central performances. Stewart delivers a raw and intense portrayal of Lou, a woman yearning for connection but burdened by her past. O’Brian matches her intensity, embodying the steely determination and vulnerability of Jackie with remarkable nuance. Their chemistry is undeniable, making us invested in their tumultuous relationship, even as things spiral out of control.

While the plot takes some wild turns, it’s the film’s thematic exploration that lingers. Glass dissects the destructive nature of desire, and the lengths people go to in the name of love-or perhaps, obsession. The violence, though brutal, feels purposeful, serving as a metaphor for the emotional turmoil the characters endure.

Admittedly, the pacing can be uneven at times. The first act establishes the characters and their connection beautifully, but the middle section drags a bit as the focus shifts towards the criminal underbelly. However, the film regains its momentum in the final act, culminating in a climax that’s both shocking and strangely cathartic.

Technically, Love Lies Bleeding is a knockout. The cinematography is sharp, using bold colours and contrasting lighting to create a visually arresting world. The pounding score complements the film’s intensity, while the editing keeps the narrative taut without sacrificing character development.

Love Lies Bleeding isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a film that revels in its own darkness, challenging us with its graphic violence and unconventional love story. But for those seeking a neo-noir experience that’s both thrilling and thought-provoking, this is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Love Lies Bleeding is a film with flaws, but its bold direction, phenomenal performances, and exploration of complex themes make it a worthwhile watch, especially for fans of unconventional thrillers. Just be prepared for a wild ride.

Mesmerizing to watch.

My first thought was it feels like the gym was depicted in the way someone who doesn’t go to the gym imagines the gym is like. Like they watched Pumping Iron instead of visiting the nearest gym. It’s like if Pumping Iron was a raunchy, lesbian, blood-soaked psychedelic experience. With a dash of crime family drama.

I found the cinematography of the movies to be quite impressive; it had a captivating aesthetic. Although it’s not on an epic scale and mostly unfolds in remote settings, it’s mesmerizingly filmed with themes of sex and violence. The characters are pretty good, so were the actors playing them. Kristen Stewart was Kristen Stewart, I think you already know what to expect when you see her in a movie, and I think she was pretty good. It took me a while to realize I recognized Katy O’Brian from The Mandalorian. I loved that she was homeless but still working out; if she can get swole living under a bridge, what’s your excuse? Lol.

Theres a huge emphasis on smoking and drugs, it’s a pretty big theme and mostly referenced on the radio. The story is alright, there’s a love, crime and family drama.

It’s quite raunchy. I wasn’t expecting that, but I suppose the movie did give off those vibes. I just didn’t watch any trailers or anything and went in blind. It also included some other adult/mature content like domestic violence. It’s quite gory as well. Initially, it felt like it was penned by a man; I was surprised to learn it was written/directed by a woman afterward. I recall thinking that there will probably be a lot of people commenting on this, expressing their displeasure with how women are portrayed in movies written by men.

The movie had several moments where I thought to myself, well that’s taken a weird turn. It gets more weird and weirder the longer in goes. It’s really weird that it was common/normal back then to just hit your wife. It was jarring to watch. Franco’s character is probably the worst one.

It’s also one of those movies where none of the characters are good people, it’s just bad people making bad decisions, in the name of love. I didn’t really find myself rooting for anyone and l didn’t feel particularly attached to the movie as a whole. I feel like it could’ve been better, and by better I mean more psychedelic, more violent, maybe even disturbing. It’s not a movie for everyone, but it’s pretty interesting and I enjoyed it. I like it but I don’t know if it’ll still be on my mind a month from now.

Worth the time

This isn’t some jam down your throat gay movie. It’s a movie with characters that happen to be gay. As someone who typically gets annoyed by movies that attempt this over the last decade now, I would say it wasn’t overwhelming or assertive at all. Straight forward plot, but never getting too predictable. It does a wonderful job of showing fresh exciting love being deconstructed by the realities of life very well.

It was also the perfect length. It never feels like it’s dragging on or being rushed.

Acting was above average for today’s standards. Nobodies acting got in the way of the plot. Overall decent way to spend an early afternoon.

Expect of heavy sex scenes in the first third or so btw.

He Named Me Malala Movie Reviews

Going all the way

While a documentary can have the distance approach, it would have been difficult to sell this one. This is all about feeling, all about emotion and all about emancipation. It is also about freedom and unity. About misunderstandings and clarifications. There is so much going on, that it’s amazing it’s not a longer movie/running time.

It works on almost all these levels, people are familiar with the person (be it because of her TV appearances or her nominations). But it’s still something different to see her personally or learn about her family and her father. You have to be a strong person to survive the things she has to face, but she still remains “human” (if that is a thing to say). A strong message is delivered and a powerful movie made …

Riveting, and at times overwhelming, He Named Me Malala is a highly inspirational documentary and a delight to watch.

Having saved the world so many times, how many superheroes have you seen on the cover of Time magazine? That’s right, they don’t exist. But real heroes do and they don’t need superpowers or a fancy costume to stand in the face of injustice. As a defender of truth and equality in the times we live in, this is the incredible true story of Malala Yousafzai, a real hero whose only weapon is indelible courage.

From Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim and produced by Imagenation Abu Dhabi, He Named Me Malala is part documentary, part animation, and part live action, but wholly narrated by Malala and her father Ziauddin Yousafzai. Although the use of animation is questionable, these segments are used as plot points leading up to the day when Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban. If not, Guggenheim would have had to reenact those moments using real actors but at the risk of discounting the authenticity of this documentary. Along with actual news footage and still images, much of the story is a reiteration of her courage, her ordeal, her survival, and her dedication as a right-to-education activist. While this might seem all too familiar to anyone following the news, the documentary doesn’t feel scripted or even overladen with praise. And why shouldn’t it be? This is about the assassination attempt on a 15-year-old girl whose only crime was speaking out on her basic right to an education.

Inspired by her memoir I Am Malala, the film begins in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 2013, where the Yousafzai family is based post recovery period. Although you don’t see a scar, Malala bears a lopsided smile whenever she is asked a question. There is sadness in her eyes along with bashful insecurity but also wisdom and an inner strength much beyond her age. “Three years have passed”, she recalls, not of the attempt on her life, but having left her beautiful home in the Swat Valley province of Pakistan. Surrounded by Afghani Mountains, we are shown images of this scenic region (which is always presented as a place of bloodshed and massacre by the media) before Malala begins her story. This is also where the narrative shifts from Malala to her father, beginning with his version of a ‘love marriage’ to Malala’s mother. As a self-taught public speaker, Ziauddin’s story is as incredible as his daughter Malala’s. While it’s clear where the latter gets her courage and insight from, it’s the development of a symbiotic father-daughter relationship that makes this a documentary that must be seen.

Riveting, and at times overwhelming, He Named Me Malala is a delight to watch, and so is Malala Yousafzai. Guggenheim could have stuffed this film with geopolitical propaganda and ended it with a bleeding cry for justice. When asked if they caught the person who shot his daughter, Ziauddin replies “Not a person, but an ideology”. Likewise, Malala has her own quips, and along with her brothers and her father add refreshingly funny moments given the subject matter. At the same time and given her status as a public figure, at no point does Malala seem like a celebrity, nor does she see herself that way. What you do see is a shy teenager but one that is utterly brave and honest with the kind of raw dedication that outflanks millions, possibly billions, of people her age. The fact that Malala was featured on Time magazine twice, followed by her becoming the youngest ever recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 proves my last statement.

He Named Me Malala is highly inspirational and the type of film where you clap in the end, only to realize that you’ve clapped too early. Malala is only 18 now, but she has achieved far more than any of us ever will. That itself is worth a standing ovation and I wish her a long life of success in her fight for equality and education with many more accolades to come.

What did you do as a teenager?

Greetings again from the darkness. One would be hard-pressed to name anyone currently on the planet who is more deserving of having her story told than Malala Yousafzai. In case you don’t recognize the name, Malala is the teenage girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out in favor of education for Pakistani girls.

Unlike her namesake in the legendary story told to open the film, this Malala somehow survived the gunshot and has continued her mission of spreading the importance of education throughout the globe. Her efforts resulted in her being named the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2014. This girl is extraordinary and inspiring.

Davis Guggenheim has proved his expertise in the documentary world with excellent work in Waiting for Superman (2010) and his Oscar winner An Inconvenient Truth (2006). Though Malala may be his most fascinating subject to date, this is probably not his best filmmaking. The extensive use of animation distracts from Malala’s story, and also Guggenheim’s attempts to show the teenage girl that exists alongside the global activist are often disjointed. We enjoy seeing her warm and sincere interactions with her brothers and her embarrassment at low grades on school work, but each time one of these sequences begins, the film abruptly shifts to another incident – possibly as a reminder to us that her life is anything but normal.

Some of the film’s highlights include Malala’s speech to the United Nations assembly, the crime scene photographs of the bus on which she and her friends were shot, and those moments when she lets her emotions roam free … she mutters “It’s so hard to get things done in this world”. We feel her pain and find ourselves wanting to stand with Malala.

Much of what we see is from her promotional tour to support her book “I am Malala”, and it’s her words and commitment to the cause that leave such an impression. Guggenheim hints that her father may have pushed her into this life, but this wise-beyond-her-years young woman has more than earned our respect and admiration. She convinces us that the best way to “arm” young people around the world is with books and a pen … the most powerful weapons. Her courage and commitment cause us to question our actions as 17 year olds. What a truly extraordinary person she is.

The Flower of My Secret Movie Reviews

An interesting, important step in Almodovar’s evolution

Sweet, and very well acted. This is much less wild and outrageous than earlier Almodovar, but compensates by having more real emotion. Still, this has two of his usual key elements — dramatic use of intense color, and a melodramatic, almost soapy, story. It’s clear he loves melodrama at the same time he gently pokes fun at it.

But in ‘Flower of My Secret’ the soap has more underpinnings in humanity, with subtler behavior and humor. Technically he gets even better with this film. It’s beautiful, shot in a more subdued style than his earlier work. Not a great movie, but a good, entertaining, human one that paves the way to his later fully ‘real’ and moving masterpieces like ‘Talk to Her’. Lovely performances.

There seem to be two distinct groups among Almodovar fans. Those who prefer his earlier, wilder, more genre busting work, and those who prefer his more recent, subtler films. I’m in the second group, but can completely understand those who feel differently. And where you fall on that scale is likely to have a big impact on your reaction to this film.

Certainly not his best movie.

In a very short period of time I’ve seen several of Pedro Almodóvar’s movies and I’ve become a fan of his work. I love his style of mixing drama with (sometimes absurd) humor and music. I like the fact that he always knows to make you feel as if you know the characters personally after seeing the movie… Having said this, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed by “La flor de mi secreto”.

The characters aren’t as well developed as I’m used to see in his movies and it’s sometimes very hard to care for his main character: Leo Macías (Marisa Paredes). As Amanda Gris (her pseudonym), she is a writer of very successful sentimental novels who deal about love, sex and happy endings. But her personal life is a complete mess. She doesn’t want to write this kind of novels anymore and she gets an assignment from a magazine to write a review on the work of… Amanda Gris. Her relationship with her man isn’t any good. He works for the Nato, is more abroad than at home and when he’s at home he wants to leave as soon as possible. She drinks too much, her mother is a cause of many concerns… She wants to change her whole life, but it isn’t as easy as she hoped it would be.

Even though the story isn’t bad or boring, it doesn’t really succeed to be as captivating as I would like it to be. The positive thing about this movie is that you already can see Almodovár’s talent for the use of humor and music, great camera work, interesting story telling… sipping through. Things that became more obvious in his later work. This movie may not be the best example of his work, but it is worth a watch. I give it a 6/10.

Colour is emotion.

The film famed for pivoting Almodovar’s move away from formless farce to the rich delights of melodrama, which would produce his two masterpieces, LIVE FLESH and ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER. SECRET isn’t quite up to those films (the mix of comedy and drama isn’t quite digested) but is a wonderful start, with its amazing heroine, whose delusions and needs are revealed but never resolved; its typically eccentric supporting cast; its ruminations on the artist and her art – there are writers, editors, dancers, filmmakers all in the film – and secrets, both private and public; its silly men; its use of interiors and decor; Almodovar’s still cherishable, unparalleled use of colour, allied with a new found sense of composition (the later films would reveal his increasing mastery of the camera); some extraordinary shots, especially the paper shower during the students’ demonstration.

But the perfect peace is shattered when a mysterious evil force invades this idyllic serenity, turning people into stone with petrifying rays. The Council of Women hold court and decide to send Sylvain, son of Queen Ambisextra, on a mission to destroy the enemy. Together with the beautiful and adventurous Arielle, the enemy that Sylvain eventually discovers very far from his home is the ultimate failure of Gandaharian scientific experimentation. It is a giant brain known as the Metamorphis, which has created an indestructible army of metal men to destroy Gandahar. Gandahar Movie Reviews

not typical sci-fi

I noticed this movie at a local rental place the other week and thought, ‘What on Earth is THIS?’

My dad has a book with 17,000 movie reviews–just reviews ranging from a sentence to a couple of paragraphs–and they gave it 2 1/2 stars–3 being good–so it was almost good (to them). They chastised the almost non-existent characterizations, which I agree; we’re given a character, we’re given about half a minute background on them, and then this is what the character has to do. I was surprised that they didn’t mention the almost non-existent voice “acting” (note the quotes), as everyone just pretty much mumbled their lines…even such a big talent as Glenn Close (playing the queen) didn’t help.

However, please note these are VERY minor gripes. I would’ve given the movie three stars myself. It’s not the typical sci-fi, with the stupidity of childhood geniuses and robots with feelings abound (and I don’t think the stereotypes of “oh no, it’s sci-fi AND a cartoon!” help either). It’s very imaginative, but pretty dark and apocalyptic; probably not for kids under the age of 6, if not 8.

And on a side note, there was some pretty good music in it, too, and a lot of it.

They Never Made Them Like This….

French animator Rene Laloux of “Fantastic Planet” renown, attempted to make another surreal sci-fi adventure with the 80’s “Ghandar” or as Isac Asimov and Harvey Wienstien decided to call it for those of us in the states “Light Years”, which since no… space travel takes place, and since the movie is about a fictional country called “Gandahar” is probably a bad title. “Light Years” I guess sounds more sci-fi-ish, and if this film was to succeed in the states(it didn’t) it was gonna need every bit of conventionality it could muster.

The story is a complex one involving the standard sci-fi tropes of eugenics, time travel, death, and utopia, and though it’s certainly more involved than most animated sci-fi (a good deal of the time were watching the characters talk), it’s really the visualization of the world and it’s inhabitants which makes this movie worth seeing.

Like “Fantastic Planet” before it, Laloux’s environments are some of the most alien that have ever been imagined. The landscape is often undulating Daliesuqe deserts, which strange trees which resemble simultaneously bodily organs and geysers, a young girl offering her breast to a new born who looks like a tapir, born out of a grown embryonic plant, a city of underground mutants who resemble Blemmyes, ancient African monsters with heads beneath their shoulders, an army hollow soldiers who turn people into statues, video camera like birds who can lift entire buildings in swarms, and of course a colossal mile wide sentient brain in the middle of the ocean.

Laloux uses sci-fi story structures to create, very evocative images that do not look like anyone else’s, ever, something few filmmakers in any medium or genre, can claim with straight face.

That being said the English voice acting is just decent, not great but decent, it keeps the story moving, but doesn’t draw you into any of the characters. “Light Years” like “Fantastic Planet” or the animated films of Svankmajer are more concerned with form than content, but not oblivious of the latter.

So if you like heady sci-fi, visually stunning design, and unique animation, this is not to be passed up. If not it’s probably not bad to see once anyway, just for the visual treat of it all, and the more I mull over the story, not the plot, I’m more impressed with how well and vividly it told me a story I’ve heard a hundred times before.

Truly original and forgotten classic…

‘Light Years’ is a work of sci-fi animation that really stands apart from the pack. In order to enjoy this film, one must have an appreciation of science fiction altogether. For those individuals such as Leonard Maltin, whom dismissed this movie as a pretentious ‘talky’ cartoon, you must understand that ‘Light Years’ tells a very human story about irresponsible inventions and ignorance in a completely ALIEN setting; this is the true magic of the film! I thought the dialogue was creative and the story was fascinating. The creatures and characters are beyond description, and the ending will blow you away. True sci-fi fans I think should dismiss Leonard Maltin’s review and rent this one!

Arthur the King Storyline

In 2014, in Costa Rica, Michael Light, an American runner, and his adventure racing team gets stuck on the first day after their leader takes the poor decision to kayak against the tide. Leo, one of the members of the team, is outraged that Michael has not paid attention to their opinions. After a 3 year lapse in his career, in 2018, Michael is not satisfied with himself and decides to race one more time with the hope of winning a race at last. He chooses two of his teammates: Olivia, a climber, whose father made a career in the same discipline; and Chik, an older racer, whose recovery from a knee injury is uncertain. However his sponsor imposes the 4th team member, Leo, Michael’s original team member, and now a social media celebrity; and, much against his own will, Light accepts. They fly from the USA to the Dominican Republic for a 5-day race mostly through mountainous jungle terrain. On the second day of the race Michael gives meatballs to a stray dog at the transition camp. Much further ahead in the race, in the middle of the jungle, the dog finds them and does not stop following them. During their walk at night the dog saves Leo and the Team from falling off a cliff and they all adopt him as one of them and call him Arthur, the King. For the last part of the competition, and while they are leading the race, however, they have to leave Arthur on shore to kayak on sea. But as they see the dog is about to drown while following them, they go back and save him. The team is thus delayed and loses the race, arriving second. Arthur collapses on arrival and a veterinary finds he is severely infected by parasites, advising to put him to sleep to prevent further suffering, which Michael refuses. He manages to take him to the USA, where the dog is saved. The last scene, 18 months later, shows them running together on a ridge.

You Never Can Tell Movie Reviews

Amusing ‘screwball comedy’ which will appeal to dog lovers

‘Woof woof!’, that’s what I say. This is a film (variously called YOU NEVER CAN TELL and YOU NEVER KNOW) in which a deceased dog, a German shepherd, is given permission to return to earth for a limited time as a human detective to solve his own murder and to clear the nice woman, his former mistress, blamed for the crime. Dick Powell, in his most congenial mode, plays the returned dog, posing as a private investigator named Rex Shepherd who sits around munching on dog biscuits when he is not looking for clues. Yes, it all sounds ridiculous, but it is done with such a light touch and such good humour that it is a most enjoyable film. And it is of special appeal to those of us who believe that dogs are in many ways superior to humans anyway. The reason why everyone is so excited about the murder of the dog is that his original owner died and left his six million dollar fortune to the dog, and as usual there are some wicked humans scheming for that stuff, which is useless to dogs, called money. This was the only feature film directed by Lou Breslow (1900-1987), who was better known as a film writer. Not only did he write this film, but he wrote 78 others, including in this very same year, both BEDTIME FOR BONZO, starring Ronald Reagan, and MY FAVORITE SPY starring Bob Hope and Hedy Lamarr. Breslow must have felt very strongly about dogs to push himself forward as director for this film. There are some very amusing scenes in Animal Heaven (doubtless located at the Dog Star, though this secret is not revealed), and the whole film is not only most enjoyable but often hilarious. However, humourless people need not apply. If you don’t know how to laugh (and it is amazing how many people don’t, especially these days when dour humourlessness is on the rise), then go watch a war movie or something instead of enjoying this light-hearted romp. But the rest of us can sit back and have a good time watching Dog Justice being done and Dog Ethics triumphing over human greed. (If only we could set the dogs on today’s psychopathic bankers, now wouldn’t that be a good idea!) The actress Peggy Dow, who only appeared in films between 1949 and 1951, unexpectedly retiring ‘for domestic reasons’ just as she was really getting going, is charming as Ellen, whom ‘Rex Shepherd’ wishes to clear of his murder. What a loss to the screen that she dropped out like that. So sit back, munch your dog biscuits, and enjoy seeing how dogs can handle things when human affairs need straightening out.

Charming

I first saw this movie as a teenager on AMC during a lazy afternoon and it was an unexpected pleasure. When I read the brief summary of the movie, which read something like: “A murdered dog comes back to life as a man to hunt his killer,” I actually expected a somewhat hard-boiled detective movie, despite the obviously outrageous premise. And I had no idea who Dick Powell was. The movie turned out to be very light-hearted and I was thoroughly entertained. Many light-hearted comedies of that era (early 1950s) make the mistake of just throwing in a lot of cute scenes and dialog and, though this movie does feature such scenes, it also has a lot of quite clever humor that keeps even the more cynical viewer satisfied. Even the murder mystery plot has intriguing aspects. The movie has a kind of fantasy atmosphere throughout that I really enjoy, and Dick Powell was never more likable than he is here. This role was perfect for him (unlike his earlier role in “Murder My Sweet”–see my review). I highly recommend it for good family fun.

One of the Most Entertaining and Likable Fantasy-Comedies Ever Made

Imaginative fantasies for-the-sake-of-an-idea are rare in Hollywood. It is much easier to impute massive powers to a watch or show a watch that can stop time, without regard for the meaning, ethics or development of such ideas. “You Never Can Tell” is beyond any doubt one of the most delightful and unexpected fantasy films ever. It begins with a visit to Beastatory, where good animals go, a heaven for non-humans courtesy of David S. Hursely and the optical department; the animals are shown on a negative image with glowing eyes, speaking English. The film was directed by Louis Breslow and written along with David Chandler. It tells the story of an Army canine who is murdered. He comes back to protect his mistress, daughter of a wealthy man played by Albert Sharpe, in the person of beautiful Peggy Dow. he is in human form, calling himself “Rex Shepherd”, and his partner for the mission of mystery-detection and help to her is Golden Harvest, a palomino filly now in human form as Goldie, his assistant. The villain of the piece is ably played by Charles Drake, who is romancing Dow. While Rex munches kibble and Goldie outruns buses and visits her psychologically troubled horse friends at the track, they somehow manage to save Dow’s life and expose the reason behind Rex’s killing and the threat to her. Of course, Rex falls in love with Dow, she with him, and he remains on Earth and watches as Goldie gallops off toward Beastatory’s alternate heaven, turning into a palomino again as she disappears into the skies. Please don’t miss this delightful film; it is one of Powell’s best, and a genuine comedy-fantasy rarity.

Homo Sapiens Storyline

The images could be taken from a science fiction film set on planet Earth after it’s become uninhabitable. Abandoned buildings – housing estates, shops, cinemas, hospitals, offices, schools, a library, amusement parks and prisons. Places and areas being reclaimed by nature, such as a moss-covered bar with ferns growing between the stools, a still stocked soft drinks machine now covered with vegetation, an overgrown rubbish dump, or tanks in the forest. Tall grass sprouts from cracks in the asphalt. Birds circle in the dome of a decommissioned reactor, a gust of wind makes window blinds clatter or scraps of paper float around, the noise of the rain: sounds entirely without words, plenty of room for contemplation. All these locations carry the traces of erstwhile human existence and bear witness to a civilisation that brought forth architecture, art, the entertainment industry, technologies, ideologies, wars and environmental disasters.—AnonymousB

Homo Sapiens Movie Reviews

An Art Installation Masquerading as a Full-Feature Film

Homo Sapiens follows in the footsteps of Koyaanisqatsi (1982) and more recently Samsara (2011) in the way of wordless, structure-less documentaries that evoke feeling through montage. Yet the mode in which Homo Sapiens assembles itself is about where the similarities end. Samsara went through great pains to capture some of the most beautiful images ever while Homo Sapiens is very much concerned with tableaux of decay and putridity.

The images are eerily, hauntingly, strikingly beautiful. Not a single human is in frame; remnants of civilization are ever present but always in the process of being reclaimed by the earth. There are fast food restaurants fallen in disrepair, abandoned office buildings, leaky subways stations and cracked concrete as far as the eye can see. The images recall the staid, defiant sculpture works of Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson in the way they are presented.

Homo Sapiens however detracts from its themes and crosses a line of good taste when it captures static frames of Fukushima amid a jumble of other images. The finiteness and fragility of human life does feel more visceral when these images come about but they feel a lot less real as well. To put it in certain terms, it feels like watching a superhero movie whereby the villain wins. The world changes thanks to a sudden and irreparable change masterminded by a singular entity. Whether purposeful or not, Homo Sapiens seems to want to put its post-apocalyptic chips on nuclear fallout.

We as a species now know better. Human civilization is likely not going to be wiped out swiftly by our own hand but in a worst case scenario, peter out in a cloud of good intentions. Not one big mistake but a thousand tiny mistakes made by a collective unconscious that lives for today; tomorrow be damned.

Homo Sapiens not a pleasant film to watch. The sound design doesn’t even offer a modernist score a la Phillip Glass but rather bombards us with birds chirping, flies buzzing and wind bellowing against ceiling tiles and paper. And this is despite barely seeing anything but broken glass to justify such loud noise.

Ultimately Homo Sapiens is an art installation masquerading as a full-feature film. A moving photo album that, granted captures some interesting images but in its silence all but announces its themes. It then uses a terrible recent tragedy to mix the proverbial pot. A gambit that most may find fitting but to me, it feels like they’re crossing a line.

Apocalypse NOW

A random series of establishing shots for post-apocalyptic movies that never get started, Homo Sapiens is more a slide show than a movie; yet, it’s hypnotic and thought-provoking. Vacant malls, theaters, temples, groceries, neighborhoods, and parking lots are the stars here, no humans are to be seen. We can only assume each environment was abandoned by natural or man-made disaster. Gentle breezes flow through the frame and no soundtrack blares, manipulating your emotions, just the ambient tones of cups rolling in the breeze, plastic flapping, flies buzzing, or pigeons cooing.

These may just be 30-second screen savers for complete nihilists, but it’s amazing how, over several minutes (the documentary is about one and a half hours) the imagination begins firing and you find yourself constructing your own story. Some shots have clues as to their location; Asia, North America, the Middle East…but most shots could be anywhere, remnants of civilization wiped out, perhaps for months, perhaps years. Chernobyl, Fukushima, Bulgaria, Argentina. Absent any intrusion of a sense of story, or even editing sequence to give us a sense of time or place, we could easily be alien travelers or archaeologists, looking at the broken and rotting remains of some lost civilization. You may have seen a location or two in some movie or other; every scene looks like a movie set created by some top art director.

The sound is the only real narrator, and if you listen closely, there are distant, perhaps phantom, sounds; alarms, a clang here or there. You’d half expect a narrator’s voice to fire up at any moment; a Morgan Freeman, David Attenborough or Werner Herzog. The camera does not swoop or glide along a track; we are immobile, fixed, and the only thing that moves is nature.

It would have been easier to string together a series of found footage from urban adventurists, but director/photographer Nikolaus Geyrhalter clearly wanted all his shots to have a consistent tone and lighting. Every shot could have been designed by a Stanley Kubrick or David Lean. There was some subtle digital manipulation or wind effects, but otherwise we are seeing it as is. There is no dramatic impact, just the matter-of-factness of humanity’s bleak demise and nature’s time-tested powers of reclamation. If there is a dramatic effect, it’s that the scenes at the end are in winter climes, and the final image is consumed by a blizzard’s whiteout. The shock, you realize afterward, is not the harrowing, desolate beauty of these post-apocalyptic sites—but the fact that they exist here and now.

I’ve never seen rebar look so beautiful.

Impressionistic Journey to Abandoned Places

Director Nikolaus Geyrhalter revisits buildings and places that once had human life and a pulsating community around them. Those places are now exposed to rain and weather, some of them inhabited by birds, insects and plants reclaiming the territory. Geyrhalter doesn’t comment with any soundtrack or camera movements. You can only hear the (excellently integrated) sounds of objects and nature.

So, dear audience, what do you feel while watching human-built places without humans in slow decay? Nostalgia for the life that had been there? Relief that the intruders are finally gone? Melancholy in view of death and disintegration of all things? – A strong, challenging film for introspective people. Highly recommended.

Yannick Storyline

In the middle of a performance of the play “Le Cocu”, a very bad boulevard comedy, Yannick gets up and interrupts the show to take the evening back in hand.

Yannick Movie Reviews

Disappointing

Someone applauds and everyone follows, is drawn into it. This seems to be the case with this film, in the story but also the film itself. Though only 1 hour and 7 minutes long it still manages to be testing your patience. The synopsis of the film presented it in a much better light. Maybe I should have stood up and left, but, like the audience in the film, I was hoping for a satisfying finale act.

In vain! I didn’t find the film more entertaining than the play that gets interrupted by Yannick. I don’t see the point in this film, where a weak boulevard play is interrupted by someone who roots for an even inferior play. The film makes fun of Yannick, the actors of the play and also the audience in turn. But to see a fool being foolish and being laughed at till he turns the table on the others who now begin to look foolish, including the audience, is no great art either and not really better than the play it mocks.

Of course, you could argue that the story should be looked at as a political statement: a fool, critizising other fools in view of a foolish audience, but honestly, others have done that much better.

Strange, fun, interesting

This film, as is often the case with Quentin Dupieux, leaves you a little disconcerted. The sudden ending prohibits any step back from the story that has just unfolded. The first half will surely make you laugh with its zaniness. The second half, turning to the taking of hostages by this individual who has become threatening, is less funny. We’re looking for the message, but there doesn’t seem to be any. We deride the troublemaker, the mediocrity of the actors, the cowardice of the spectators. Without any real conclusion.

I am sure that all theatre actors will shudder as they perhaps recall a similar experience of a provocateur interrupting the play they are performing. A sabotage that more twists and turns could have made exciting. Far too many films are at least an hour too long. This one could add additional time.

Subversive and sincere, a breath of fresh air in the face of ambient mediocrity.

Quentin Dupieux’s absurd, disjointed and fanciful humour gives way here to the absurdity of the situation in a palpable reality. A radical change of tone compared to his previous films that really feels good. Touching, sincere and magical, Yannick is a breath of fresh air in a world of comedy that is constantly muttering. Social criticism, comedy criticism, criticism of the public, criticism of the creator in his relationship to the work as well as the public.

The actors are excellent in bad actor, the audience faithful to itself and Raphaël Quenard embodies so well a Yannick full of surprise and who with simple words summarizes so well the mediocre of the situation. Yannick is in the political background, the service is no longer satisfactory, the art is taken in hand by a representative of the people, a true pirate, passionate about sincerity, passionate about justice. And it does better, gives meaning and reminds us that we sleep, we’re asleep. But how long has it been? An echo more than real with our life, our situation in front of the ambient mediocrity.

The finale is as magnificent as it is frightening in its latest plan, a confrontation of reality and a system that is complete in its status quo confronting the underlying violence of society. But we do not have to see this aspect to get a kick, Yannick is simple, funny, really funny and especially really well done. Personally I love Quentin’s films, but it’s hard to see for someone who doesn’t usually like the absurd. Here the form, like history, everyone can follow it, everyone can understand and it is done brilliantly, a true little subversive and sincere jewel, to see urgently.

Legend of the Lost Locket Movie Reviews

A stimulating treasure hunt

7.9 stars.

This is a very good film. I recommend not letting any initial impressions dissuade from watching ‘Legend of the Lost Locket’.

It is a tale of a valuable locket missing now for two hundred years. Due to some recent discoveries, a woman sets out to find it once and for all. Her mother spent half of her fortune many years ago to purchase one half of this cherished locket, the half with the picture of a man. Her legacy would be to one day find the missing piece so the man and woman could finally be together again. But, she was unsuccessful and has since passed on. Now her daughter, who runs the antique business, is on the trail of this precious item. Lately, it has become the focus of some other antique hunters. It is more than simply a picture of a young woman in love, it is a jewel that symbolizes an age old love story of a man and woman separated in the early 1800’s. He came to America, and she remained behind in Europe.

We experience the history of the locket and some backstory of the two who were in love, yet unable to stay together. He settled in New England and founded a town, and now two centuries later, some local residents get a hint that the missing piece of the locket could be nearby.

Word is spreading, and now the fabled trinket has risen to the level of priceless heirloom representing a remarkable history. Antique seeking enthusiasts the world over are becoming engrossed in its appeal. But All who seek it are unaware of the depth of the bond shared by the original owners…that it was hidden to protect the memory of her journey across the world to reunite with him, in hopes of rekindling their love.

Strange and odd

I think about halfway through this movie, I decided it just didn’t make sense. Our heroine hails from London, visits a small town in the NE USA to hunt for a lost locket half, and immediately breaks into the town hall at night looking for archives that should help her in her search. Of course, there are security alarms that tip off the town sheriff who arrives, arrests her, and then gets involved in the locket search. Make sense to you?

Then we get the feeling that someone is stalking our heroine and reading her private notes, probably learning about the locket and hoping to discover the valued item first. This “mystery” is pretty easily explained when the culprit is caught on another illegal (attic, this time) search & she confesses everything previously denied because of a bluffed fingerprint identification (which isn’t true). After all is said and done, the locket is found (finally) & the sheriff and heroine somehow fall in love and she stays in the small town to start her antique business and be with her sheriff.

The production values are pretty good except for one glaring exception: lighting and camera work on black actors aren’t up to the challenge. It is as though we really don’t know how to photograph dark-skinned actors in such a way as to see their expressions and complexions realistically. Still makes no sense.

Ramy Youssef: Feelings Movie Reviews

Brilliant

He’s definitely not your typical comedian. He delivers well thought out comedy. Tackling racism, societal constructs and other topics, Ramy will make you think and laugh at the same time. He did cross the line once or twice, but if you think about it, you’ll understand where he’s coming from. I enjoyed it immensely.

Ramy Youssef is one of the best

Having taken a Philip Roth-style look at the Muslim community in “Ramy”, Ramy Youssef now has a special on HBO in which he expounds on his experiences. Great guy and he has some funny stuff in store. I recommend it.

This special is for true standup comedy lover

If Fluffy is your favorite comedian, skip it. If you appreciate good premises & unique takes, check it out.

Wicked Little Letters Storyline

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark, absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, “Wicked Little Letters” follows two neighbours: deeply-conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents start to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss and Rose might not be the culprit after all.—STUDIOCANAL

Wicked Little Letters Movie Reviews

Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley impress

Very good, this!

‘Wicked Little Letters’ is fun. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley impress in lead roles, both managing to stand out just as much as the other – Colman is particularly perfectly cast. The rest of them merit praise as well, namely Anjana Vasan and Timothy Spall.

There isn’t much more to note about this really and I don’t mean that in a negative way whatsoever. It’s all competently put together, as those onscreen bring this rather simple film to life – and I like those type of movies. Well worth a watch! Happy that I managed to catch it at the cinema on the big screen, always nice.

Brilliantly funny and original

Wicked Little Letters is an incredibly funny, cheeky, and punchy film that will be sure to put a smile on your face.

It follows a series of bizarre events as the pious and reserved Edith receives a string of crude letters, supposedly from her boisterous neighbour Rose. It’s one of those delightful British films that brings to a light a surprisingly true story and packs it full of brilliant British talent.

The story is great fun. As mentioned it’s cheeky and lewd but this isn’t the only string to its bow. There are some brilliantly fleshed out and interesting lead characters as well as a great collection of supporting characters, which gives it a great blend of comedy and drama.

Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman as the two leads are both brilliant as expected. They each bring a different style of comedy to their characters, elevating the witty dialogue superbly. They are just such great fun to watch.

Overall this film is just an absolute hoot. It’s fun and quirky and boisterous and just a really good time.

Entertaining enough, hilariously entertaining in parts

STAR RATING: ***** Brilliant **** Very Good *** Okay ** Poor * Awful

In the 1920’s, in the little village of Littlehampton, a scandal erupts where a series of outrageous, insulting, profane letters are sent to local residents. Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), a prudish local woman, is especially shocked at the tone of the letters, along with stern head of the household , her father Edward (Timothy Spall.) She has her suspicions, in the shape of Rose (Jessie Buckley), a foul mouthed Irish lady Edith took under her wing and now regrets. Everything seems clear cut, but under the surface, a shocking truth lurks.

Director Thea Shurrock’s homegrown period comedy piece has proven something of a sleeper hit, a seemingly traditional historical yarn, with a subversive twist in its tail, with its intermittent outpourings of hilariously filthy profanity, and even more unbelievably, based on a true life story. With a slew of top flight acting talent heading the bill, including current acting royalty Olivia Colman in the lead role, it definitely has loftier ambitions than just to be a one-joke comedy piece, but in spite of touching on some worthier notes, the sporadic letter sequences and the outrageous belly chuckles they provoke remain its chief selling point.

Sending up the moral pruriency of the time it’s set in as it does, and with the incredulity of the plot line already having it up in arms on the back of this, at the risk of having my review rejected by IMDb, the historical accuracy of the piece feels further compounded, sadly, by the notable minority cast members in key roles, including Anjana Vasan as an Asian female police constable on the hunt for the culprit, which given the setting and the historical timeline, sadly does hinder the believability of things. It’s not distracting enough to see Jonny Sweet’s script touch on other worthwhile points, such as people’s standing in a community affecting peoples judgment of them without proof, as well as hitting on some darker sequences in general that even out the funnier stuff.

For all its loftier praises, it’s essentially a novelty film, with its laughs generated from a rather stationary source, but it still hits the nail on the head this way, and when they strike, they do provide an outrageously good chuckle. ***
