Finding the Money Storyline

An intrepid group of economists is on a mission to instigate a paradigm shift by flipping our understanding of the national debt – and the nature of money – upside down. We all use money, and yet the questions of what is money, and where does money come from remain elusive. FINDING THE MONEY follows former chief economist to the Senate Budget Committee, Stephanie Kelton, on a journey through Modern Money Theory or “MMT”, to unveil a deeper story about money, injecting new hope and empowering countries around the world to tackle the biggest challenges of the 21st century: from climate change to inequality.—Finding the Money

Finding the Money Movie Reviews

The Power to Transform

Finding the Money has the potential to completely upend the way you understand not only the economy but society as a whole. Few films, documentary or otherwise, can lay claim to that kind of impact upon the viewer. When the material presented is understood, suddenly everybody talking about govt policy-especially but not limited to fiscal policies like taxing and spending-starts to sound crazy. It’s because they don’t know what you now know. Or in some cases are pretending not to know it.

The myths that are propagated about the monetary system and the constraints it operates under are not accidents, but redound to the benefit of a power structure-a ruling class-that prefers the highly inegalitarian status quo. Economic inequality is not just an outcome of their preferred fiscal policies, but the very source of their political power. Understanding the power of fiat currency-and that money is not property belonging to individuals but a public utility-is essential to restoring egalitarianism and reclaiming democratic governance.

Completely changed my understanding (BA-Econ & MBA)

I consider(ed) myself to be a very knowledgeable about macro economics. This movie completely altered my understanding. I highly recommend. Taxation and government spending is obviously a subject that sparks a lot of political and ideological debate, but the film-maker exposes the hipocracy and misunderstanding that politicians of all ideologies share. I wish the movie was available by streaming it directly online. I would pay to see it again. I’d even give it away to friends for Christmas if it were possible to do so. Please try to increase the distribution of this really important information.

Abigail Movie Reviews

Alisha

There is nothing in this film that you haven’t seen in a number of other films but it manages, thankfully, to deliver.

It doesn’t for my money have as much humour as Ready or Not but does have enough character back story for the audience to know who to support and who to scorn and to emotionally commit to ( as much as you can in a horror flick).

You know what is going to happen once the basic premise is exposed and it’s fun finding out how and when, and watching the whole thing play out.

At the centre of it all is Abigail, played expertly and delightfully by Alisha Weir who exploits this platform to showcase her undoubted talent. She is ably supported by the cast to realise this competent effort and make viewing it time well spent.

I believe the film is best watched without prior exposure to the trailer, hard as that is these days, and have also not revealed any content here in that spirit. Enjoy the film.

An enjoyable horror, with some nice comedy elements.

A mixed group of criminals kidnap Abigail, a young ballerina, and daughter of a powerful business mogul. The gang think they’re coming into millions, but Abigail has a shocking surprise waiting for them.

One of the horror highlights of 2024 so far, it’s done well at The Box Office, and it’s easy to understand why, it’s definitely a crowd pleaser.

A seemingly straightforward thriller very rapidly turns into a genre crossing horror movie. Abigail is a real mix of styles, it’s goofy, it’s funny, it’s well paced, and of course there are plenty of jump scares.

Very nicely made, well shot, with some good music, which surprisingly doesn’t become too intrusive.

You really can’t fault any of the performances, credit very much to that young Alisha Weir, excellent as the title character. Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens are both good, but Weir steals the show.

A cheeky And then there were none reference too.

7/10.

Shaitaan Movie Reviews

It could have been much better. Lazy Bollywood.

The high points of the movie are all in the trailer. You feel like cheated. I will tell you my problems (Spoilers ahead): 1. Ajay devgan character being a father is so passive. Your daughter is trapped by a man in front of you. He don’t react, just make schemes. If he could have been active and involved fully, like showed anger when he first time come to know vashikaran but hell no, our guy is standing and processing it like a cpu.

2. They streched too much on vashikaran. Like 80% is the madhvan tourtouring the girl.

3. Ending is crap, he recorded madhvan voice to remove vashikaran. Really, you think there is no mantra, or brain/telepathy involved here. As far as I understand, it’s the will of the guy who did vashikaran you follow not the tongue.

4. They completely copied vash story, made it on big budget and did some ending change and served us.

5. On very plot point, the high point of the plot you already have seen in trailer. It feel so bad. Saari movie trailer main dikha di. Like fooling the public. Nothing more is in movie. You feel kuch to chod dete movie k lie.

Overall, I ll say movie is not bad. But could have been much much better. They had very good plot. But their treatment is hell lazy. Nothing good is done on vash. So it comes out bad than vash. Like I ll tell you who ever will see this movie can give 10 good ideas for the story.

One of the Best Remake

Shaitaan is a remake of the Gujarati film “Vash” and I already watch the movie as well.

In one line… Vash ending is very Dark, I didn’t like it that much but the story acting was amazing.

In Shaitaan R Madhavan as the “Shaitaan” is brilliant as the antagonist and is evil personified. He is the highlight of the film for sure. Ajay Devgan, Jyotika & especially Janki Bodiwala, lend strong support to Madhavan in this simple tale of good vs evil supernatural thriller.

Great direction, editing and a stellar cast with great performances will make this an entertaining watch for fans of this genre !! Soon Movies will be on an OTT platform but the fun of watching this kind of film is in only in the theater.

The song and BGM are very nice.

Family film.

Turtles All the Way Down Movie Reviews

Great adaptation

I’m honestly such a harsh reviewer when it comes to book to movie adaptations but I thought this was really good. Loved literally the whole cast too, the performances were great 🙂 I do t super understand the 6/10 average rating for this, and I went into assuming that would be accurate. Love the John Green book and read it in high school, I thought this translated be try well narratively even given the limitations of the screen. I also just want to point out (and this is true to the book as well) how really good of a depiction of OCD this is. I don’t think there are many very thoughtful depictions of the disorder.

LUIS SÁNCHEZ

It is a very entertaining movie, it is more like spending time. In general terms you can see that the performances are very dynamic, the empathy data there are times that is not always seen in a film and here I did find that sequence with the actors. Which makes it an entertaining app to have a good time or for a weekend with nothing to do. It is a good recommendation. That part that makes us connect with a movie is a species. To be honest, I feel that at the end the film loses its advantage since it had a good premiere but little by little the pace fell off, which was what disappointed me the most.

A great adaptation

I’ll start by saying I’m a fan of John Green. I’ve read most of his books following the popularity of Fault In Our Stars and have enjoyed the movie adaptations. I can remember reading this book and not loving it – Likely in comparison to some of his others. But for what is maybe not his strongest story, this movie is a really good adaptation. I think it captures the character of Aza really well, and then changes made to the storyline help move the film along for the better. I think the young cast have done a great job, and whilst this isn’t the type of movie that will win any awards, all in all it’s a very solid film.

The First Omen Storyline

Title: Shadows of RomeChapter 1: A Call to ServiceSarah stood before the ornate gates of St. Peter’s Basilica, her heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. She had traveled across the Atlantic Ocean from her small hometown in the heart of America to answer a calling she couldn’t quite explain. At twenty-three, she felt a sense of purpose stirring within her, urging her to devote her life to the church.Raised in a devout Catholic family, Sarah had always felt a deep connection to her faith. Her parents, both staunch believers, had instilled in her a sense of duty and devotion from a young age. Now, as she stood on the threshold of this sacred place, she knew that her journey was just beginning. With a deep breath, Sarah pushed open the heavy gates and stepped into the grandeur of St. Peter’s Square. The sight before her took her breath away. The magnificent basilica rose before her, its towering dome reaching toward the heavens. The square buzzed with the energy of pilgrims and tourists from around the world, their voices blending into a cacophony of languages. As Sarah made her way through the throngs of people, she felt a sense of peace settle over her. This was where she was meant to be, she was sure of it. She had been accepted into a program that would allow her to serve the church in Rome, assisting with various outreach programs and ministries. It was a dream come true for Sarah, a chance to immerse herself in the heart of Catholicism and deepen her connection to God.Chapter 2: A Haunting PresenceIn the days that followed, Sarah threw herself into her work with zeal. She found fulfillment in helping those less fortunate, whether it was serving meals at a local soup kitchen or volunteering at a homeless shelter. But amidst the joy of serving others, Sarah couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. It started with a sense of unease that lingered in the back of her mind, like a shadow lurking just out of sight. Sarah dismissed it at first, attributing it to the overwhelming nature of her new surroundings. But as the days passed, the feeling only grew stronger. One evening, as Sarah made her way back to her modest apartment after a long day of volunteering, she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. It was as if someone-or something-was watching her, their eyes boring into her very soul. She quickened her pace, her heart pounding in her chest.Just as she reached the safety of her apartment building, Sarah heard a low, guttural sound emanating from the darkness behind her. She whirled around, her breath catching in her throat. But there was nothing there, only the empty street bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights.Shaken but determined to shrug off her unease, Sarah hurried inside and locked the door behind her. She told herself it was just her imagination running wild, that there was nothing to fear. But deep down, she knew that something was terribly wrong.Chapter 3: Uncovering the TruthAs the weeks passed, Sarah’s sense of unease only intensified. She began to notice strange occurrences around the city-unexplained disappearances, whispered rumors of dark rituals performed in secret, and a pervasive sense of fear that hung in the air like a shroud.

The Memory Book Movie Reviews

Finding True long Lasting Love That Cant fade

I really enjoy this movie it is somewhat similar to the notebook. It really shows how two people can really let a good thing go but can with the help of strangers brought them back together after decades it’s a real love story definitely reccomend it

good chemistry

Photographer Chloe Davenport (Meghan Ory) is exhibiting her photos in a gallery but her confidence takes a hit from bartender Gabe Sinclair (Luke Macfarlane). She is taken with an old photo album at a swap meet and buys it for $10. She grows interested in the couple in the photos and decides to track them down with Gabe’s help.

It’s a Hallmark mystery romance and it’s better than most of Hallmark’s offerings. I actually like the chemistry of the two leads as they banter back and forth. It could have done more. I do have an issue with Chloe’s obsession even after Sarah’s plea for her to stop. It puts a damper on the treasure hunt aspect when it’s a journey against Sarah’s wishes. There has to be a way to put up a speed bump without derailing the whole train. It may work better if Tori’s Garden is the one who tells them to stop. There comes a point when being pushy is no longer cute and becomes destructive. Nevertheless, it’s great to see Adrienne Barbeau again and she still has it.

Thanks for the memories

‘Memory Book’ (2014)

Opening thoughts: 2014’s ‘Memory Book’ did sound very charming even if the plot synopsis was nothing earth shattering. My Hallmark film completest quest (which has gradually overtime included Lifetime and UPTV), that is still ongoing with no intent to stop just yet, has been a very uneven endeavour but an interesting one with some real winners. Luke Macfarlane has been good in other films (especially his later work), though his films are uneven like with a vast majority of Hallmark regulars.

His performance in ‘Memory Book’ is no exception, and the film itself impressed me quite a lot. Not quite one of the standout viewings of the whole Hallmark completest project but of the early 2010’s films it is one of the better ones in my view. It is not earth shattering or anything out of the ordinary, but it was watched by me in the want of something charming, light hearted, touching and heart-warming. ‘Memory Book’ succeeded in all four of those areas on the whole, even if not every single area overall quite comes off.

Bad things: ‘Memory Book’ isn’t perfect. There is admittedly nothing new story wise. It is very easy to tell what is going to happen before it happens and the ending is the pretty typical Hallmark film sort of ending (meaning easily telegraphed and on the too neat side) not in doubt.

It is a slight film too, meaning that there are times where it drags a little.

Good things: Despite those few things, ‘Memory Book’ is a charming, heart-warming charmer that succeeds at a vast majority of its aims. One of the biggest strengths is the very winning performance of Macfarlane. Very subtly charismatic, very natural and very honest. Luckily, Meghan Ory (another relatively Hallmark regular who has also done good work in a hit and miss filmography) is every bit his equal, performing with a lot of heart and charm. Have always liked Adrienne Barbeau, ever since her great voice work on ‘Scooby Doo on Zombie Island’, and she is her usual reliable self. The characters are more than merely ciphers and easy to root for.

Visually, ‘Memory Book’ looks nice. It’s not drably lit, is cohesively edited and the locations are made good use of and photographed in an easy on the eyes way. The music is not constant or overpowering. The dialogue doesn’t have too much cheese and doesn’t fall into schmaltz, it’s amusing and sometimes movingly delivered with spirit. It is very touching later on. The direction is more than capable and while the story is far from perfect it is light hearted and heart-warming, with the sentiment never becoming too much.

Concluding thoughts: Overall, very well done.

8/10.

Murder on Monday Movie Reviews

Amnesia, murder and a sweet married couple

Ralph Richardson arrives home from work at seven as he does every day, where he finds his wife Margaret Leighton sobbing. When she shows him the newspaper, it hits him: it’s not Monday evening but Tuesday evening! He’s been missing for an entire day, and he has no recollection of where he’s been. While trying to figure out what happened with family doctor Jack Hawkins, they get news that the safe of Richardson’s social club has been robbed, and a steward at the club murdered. Inspector Campbell Singer is investigating and all clues seem to lead to Richardson…

Based on a play by R.C. Sheriff (and inspired by personal experiences) that also starred Richardson (‘The Fallen Idol’), this is the sole movie that he directed. Which is quite a remarkable feat as he’s in almost every scene. He does a very nice job tho, both in front of and behind the camera. He gives a great restrained performance and Leighton (‘The Good Die Young’) is perfectly cast as his wife. Together they make one of the sweetest couples I’ve seen lately, with some very touching scenes (esp the one where he tries to prepare her for life without him, while having tea and toast). The resolution of Richardson’s predicament is quite satisfying and also adds depth to the movie and Richardson’s psyche. It also shows how an innocent little white lie between husband and wife (and this one really is innocent), can have grave consequences…

Richardson’s directing and the camera work by Jack Hilyard (‘The Bridge On The River Kwai’) and Edward Scaife (‘Night of The Demon’) is straight-forward and devoid of flourishes but efficient and solid. It’s not the most exciting movie ever made as it is primarily dialogue-driven, but it’s a good uber-British stiff upper lip take on an amnesia noir thriller, with excellent and touching performances by Richardson and Leighton. Recommended. 7/10

British Gold Nugget from the 1950’s

Ralph Richardson, who both directs and acts in this film, has taken a simple story that depicts a short period in the life of a middle-class couple in post-war England whose routine is suddenly disrupted by the memory lapse of the husband. The story is brought to life by the acting of the three main actors – Richarson and Margaret Leighton as the couple and the medical doctor, Jack Hawkins.

A veteran of World War II (1939-45), the dutiful husband is stricken with an anxiety attack that causes him to relive his days in battle. When this mental episode is over, he cannot remember what happened for a full 24-hour period. Husband and wife are perplexed and anxious by this sudden turn of events. They turn to their understanding family doctor for an explanation. The doctor, Jack Hawkins, is sympathetic and not overly worried but eager to find out the source of the problem.

As it turns out, a theft and murder occurred that seem to implicate the husband or so the couple fears. Lies and cover-ups complicate the matter and the couple become so upset that they make things worse for themselves. The couple are so used to their routine that a sudden and unexplained twist becomes exaggerated. The story presents us with a puzzle and the reaction of two decent but somewhat docile human beings, who feel they will be unfairly targeted by the authorities. However, the police go about their work very calmly and before long everything is explained.

The movie is a throwback to a time when ordinary people enjoyed simple pleasures like going to their club, or taking in the “pictures” and growing their chrysanthemums in the adjoining greenhouse garden…so very British.

It is these very ordinary people that I have a great sympathy and admiration for in our often self-serving world. Nothing extraordinary about the movie or the couple but almost 60 years on, the acting still makes it a delight to watch.

Strangely unsettling

Many seem to dismiss this movie as a mild matinée entertainment. I found it very unsettling as the story deliberately starts with a normal, boring situation only to depart from normality in an abrupt and disturbing way to offer a glare into the abyss of the human psyche. The first two or three minutes the viewer is given time to settle down for something that looks like a comedy. A cheerful caricature of a meek office clerk (Ralph Richardson) comes home. He meets his wife desperate, she tells him he has disappeared for 24 hours. The clerk is not aware of that.

Now, this is a standard situation for a comedy. But in this movie the couple in question is simply shattered. Time you cannot account for is regarded by them as abnormal, a potential sin. Distrust arises, the wife distrusts her husband and, what’s worse, the husband distrusts himself. The situation gets worse when the clerk learns that a member of a club he belongs to was murdered during the time in question. In desperation he goes to see a doctor (Jack Hawkins) and tells him of his memory loss and the murder. He also tells him that he thinks he might have committed the murder. As the doctor tries to laugh that off the clerk says: But I absolutely hated that man. He does that with an unexpected vehemence that it really made me jump.

The riddle can be solved and the story has a happy ending. The clerk’s amnesia was caused by subconscious memories of bombing raids, a backfiring car made him go into shock for 24 hours, luckily in a „safe place” (a pub). As a matter of fact, the discovery of this hidden vulnerability is horrific and was probably not uncommon the time this movie was made. And the way the main protagonist practically bends over double to put blame on himself is heart-wrenching. Ralph Richardson gives a deep, feeling performance in this unusual psychological drama about guilt, trust, order and disorder. He also directed.

The Last Warning Movie Reviews

A mystery dressed up as a horror film

Essentially this is part “Cat and the Canary” and part “Phantom of the Opera” – also silent Universal properties. It has some slack parts but the visual atmosphere helps to cover them up, and it has some very inventive title cards where the writing may be initially blurry and come into focus, or the writing may start up clear and then appear to melt down the page, or it may appear to be underwater.

The film is about an actor, John Woodford, in a theatre on Broadway, who dies suddenly when he gets to the part of the play where he is backed into the fireplace by another actor and picks up a candlestick. The lights go out, and when they come back on there is Woodford dead on the floor. The police come to question everybody who was present, then Woodford’s body disappears before the coroner gets there. It is discovered by the police that Woodford and another actor, Richard Quayle (John Boles) were arguing in actress Doris Terry’s (Laura LaPlante’s) dressing room, and both were suitors of hers.

So without a body, the investigation cannot go on, the theatre is closed, and the papers are shown having a field day with the “love triangle” that is insinuated to have something to do with the killing. Several years later, Woodford’s close friend (Montagu Love as Arthur McHugh) decides to reopen the theatre with the same cast as the night of the killing and the same play. Why does the entire cast return? Because to not return would make them look guilty.

But somebody does not want the play to open. Heavy scenery comes crashing down. Smoke bombs go off. Threatening letters are written to members of the cast that they perform at their peril, and some mysterious masked figure is running and jumping about the place and even stealing Doris’ purse and putting her personal possessions in strategic places to make her look like she is in on all of the strange happenings. Is it the ghost of John Woodford trying to avenge himself? Well of course not. But it might be the real John Woodford, having faked his own death, and still mad at Boles and LaPlante for his romantic rejection. Watch and find out what is behind all of this.

The visuals are just great here. The opening scene reminds me somewhat of 1929’s Broadway with all of the pictures of the Broadway nightlife of 1929. Also, the theatre, from the outside, looks like the face of some frightening creature complete with eyes, a nose, and mouth. I just wish better prints were available.

Unseen masterpiece of mystery!

This movie pops up on ebay once in a while and for fans of mystery or horror films, particularly those of Universal, this is a must.

The plot is unimportant – it is about a haunted old theater where an old Broadway play is being brought back despite threats from the ghost of a dead actor.

This film was the last directed by the great Paul Leni. It is really the work of a virtuoso working at his peak. It has everything The Cat and the Canary had and more. The version that seems to be relatively available on video has a good music track too, but unfortunately it seems that the experimental sound sequences the film originally contained have not survived.

Nevertheless, we are lucky that this film has survived as it is such a joyous romp of horror cliches with inventive, wild camera moves and stunning lighting and spooky set design. It foreshadows the great horror classics that were less than two years away for Universal. It is just wonderful filmmaking from a forgotten great director who was at his peak, so if you are into old dark house mysteries or Universal horror movies – FIND IT! – It is one of the best!

8/10 – even better than The Cat and the Canary.

You will never get through the opening performance!

Astute producer Carl Laemmle invited talented German director Paul Leni to join Universal. This proved to be a masterstroke. Before his untimely death in 1929 Leni directed four films one of which, ‘The Chinese Parrot’ is considered ‘lost’, the other three of which are superb. From its astonishing opening sequence ‘The Last Warning’ is a brilliantly inventive and imaginative piece that holds our attention throughout. A great deal of credit must surely go to cinematographer Hal Mohr who, although American born, had assimilated European film techniques during a brief sojourn in Paris. His greatest achievement is the ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ of Max Reinhardt. The specially composed score although a little over-orchestrated, is far superior to the usual incongruous, excruciating, tacked on scores with which so many restored silent films are cursed. Such a sadness to lose a director of Leni’s gifts but his influence on Universal’s classic horrors of the 1930’s is there for all to see.

Henry VIII and His Six Wives Storyline

On his deathbed Tudor-king Henry VIII remembers his long reign and especially the crucial part his six marriages played in it, without producing the male heir he desired most to prevent civil wars for the succession as England suffered before his father’s ascent. His first queen, Spanish princess Kathryn of Aragon, had one fatal flaw: her children died, except daughter Mary, so he pressed Rome for an annulment, and when that failed out went cardinal Wolsey as chief minister and Henry made himself head of the Church of England instead of the papacy and married Anne Boleyn. When she too failed to produce a male heir, just princess Elisabeth, he had her head roll for ‘infidelity’. The third queen, gentle Jane Seymour, died giving birth to sickly prince Edward. For diplomatic reasons Henry married minor princess Anne of Cleves, whose utter lack of female charms causes another annulment and the fall of Thomas Cromwell, who recommended her. Fifth is the lovely Catherine Howard, cousin of Anne Boleyn, but again childless and found to have been carnal with servants before and after her royal marriage, so also decapitated. Finally Catherine Parr, a young widow, stands at his deathbed.—KGF Vissers

Henry VIII and His Six Wives Movie Reviews

Definitive Tudor story

This is benchmark-quality drama, a two-hour film retelling of the lives (and deaths) of Henry VII’s wives that uses much the same cast and crew as a previous six-hour BBC miniseries.

As a film, it’s pretty much unbeatable and sets a standard of high quality that few others can match. Sets, costumes and backdrop are all superb, but of course the real strengths lie in the script and the calibre of acting. Keith Michell stars in a role he was born to play, never less than authentic whether he’s playing Henry as an athletic young man or as an obese ancient. He also manages to make the tyrant deeply human, which is another string to his bow.

With the full story of the six wives crammed into a two-hour time slot, the pacing is fast and the script full of drama. Some of the wives fare better than others, but highlights include Charlotte Rampling’s witchy Anne Boleyn and Lynne Frederick’s captivating innocent, Catherine Howard. Filling the supporting cast with familiar, entertaining figures like Michael Gough, Donald Pleasence and Brian Blessed is another plus.

Most of all, though, I found this retelling succeeded far better in bringing to life the era than others – check out the terrible THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL for a good comparison. We learn much about politics, entertainment and religion of the era, but it’s never told in a dry or heavy way. Unbeatable? Yes, I think this is.

Rather compressed perhaps, but one of the better films and such detailing of Henry VIII, his life and his wives

Although I am no historian, I do take an interest in the subject and I loved learning about the Tudors even in primary school. Henry VIII and his Six Wives is for me one of the better films and such detailing of Henry VIII and his life and six wives. The story is compelling and well paced and the dialogue is intelligent and moving. For me, my only complaint really is the length, the events and details are compressed for just over two hours. For so many details and events, I couldn’t help thinking it was too short and some of the events could have been expanded upon and some of the latter half less over-balanced perhaps. That fault aside, the film is splendidly directed, is reasonably true to history and maintains a strong emotional impact. David Munrow’s music score is beautiful and evocative too. But two things especially stood out. One was the period detail and production values, the costumes and scenery are nothing short of splendid and the photography captures that beautifully. The other is the acting, which is wonderful from the entire cast. Keith Michell gives a textbook example of how to play Henry VIII, he doesn’t play the famous king as a tyrant but his portrayal is a moving and somewhat more sympathetic one. Of his wives a stunning Charlotte Rampling and suitably vulnerable Lynne Frederick come off best, while Bernard Hepton is a fine Cramner and Donald Pleasance is a wonderfully devious Cromwell. In conclusion, a very good film. 8/10 Bethany Cox

What would it be like to be a Tudor king?

I first saw this film, aged about ten, as a result of my great interest in the famous King Henry and I think possibly also because I was in the middle of writing a short play about him. It’s been a while since I saw this, but – looking back – I think I was perhaps a bit young to view it back then. There’s nothing explicitly gory or violent but some scenes – on reflection – are perhaps a bit much for children of that age.

Nevertheless, it does tell the story of Henry and his wives, even if you get the sense that some things (the real Catherine of Aragon, for instance, was pregnant about six times, but you’d never know it from this – one might get the impression that she only had two children before Henry tired of her) are brushed over a bit. In keeping with the real time span, a lot of time is concentrated on Catherine and her successor Anne Boleyn although I seem to remember that nothing much is made of, for instance, Henry’s need to marry the pregnant Anne before she bore the future Elizabeth I.

Although the story is told in flashback and some major points in history (eg. the dissolution of the monasteries) are dealt with through scene montages, you do get a flavour of Henry VIII’s character and life – notice how the plainly-dressed Jane Seymour becomes more decorated as she gains the king’s notice – and even an idea of communication in Tudor times (he decided to marry Anne of Cleves because he saw a miniature of her). It occurs to me that the focus on Henry may be a disadvantage – we don’t see Anne of Cleves adapt to life as the King’s sister, we don’t see the Holy Roman Emperor enraged when his aunt Catherine of Aragon is being divorced, we don’t see much of the infant Elizabeth I at all.

One opinion this film formed for me was the idea that Katherine Howard was very much a victim of fate. I have read that the real woman was sexually precocious (although this film merely gives the impression that she was a bit flirty) because of her grandmother’s lack of moral guidance, but this interpretation made me think that the Duke of Norfolk, head of the Howards, suddenly jumped on an opportunity to get into Henry’s good books by pushing a young family member under the King’s nose (apparently unaware of his teenage niece’s past – she must certainly have been the least suitable member of his family to have been promoted in this way) without bothering to properly consider his actions.

Little is made of Catherine Parr – after Henry’s dispatch of his fifth queen – and one gets the impression that he settled into a happy family life, failing to mention that he did in fact have the unfortunate woman investigated due to her religious convictions. However, my A-Level history lessons led me to believe that mediaeval kings were quite at liberty to be ruthless despots, and Keith Michell certainly gives us an idea that Henry was that way inclined.

On the Beat Movie Reviews

Double the Wisdom, Double the Fun

“On the Beat” was among Norman Wisdom’s later films and remains one of his best. In this outing, the ever-aspiring Norman Pitkin wants to be a policeman like his late father, but he is rejected for being too short. Undaunted, Norman goes for the police physical exam on a pair of stilts in one of the film’s many hilarious skits. Still dreaming of a police career, Norman dons his dad’s uniform and plays ball with a group of kids. During the game, he blows the police whistle, and mayhem not seen since the heydays of Mack Sennett and the Keystone Cops erupts throughout the town. The physical nature of Wisdom’s comedy and the emphasis on visuals explain his broad appeal among non-English-speaking audiences, much like silent comedy attracted immigrant audiences in the United States.

As a bonus, “On the Beat” offers not one, but two Normans. Besides his on-screen persona, Pitkin, Wisdom also plays Giulio, an Italian gangster who poses as a hairdresser and uses his beauty salon as a front. Although the swishy mustached stereotype is dated and arguably offensive, Norman is too endearing and funny to be guilty of anything but going for a laugh. When Wisdom plays Norman the policeman impersonating Giulio the hairdresser the results are hysterical. Although Norman is nearly impossible to upstage, the pixie-like Esma Cannon as Norman’s landlady, Mrs. Timms, manages to steal her scenes with delightful facial expressions and impish delivery. “On the Beat” is on the beat and strikes no false notes, providing a string of comic scenes that pay homage to silent comedy and generate tears of laughter.

“Wait for me!”

Because I’m laughing behind and the reason is this little fella, known as Mr Pitkin…

Another hit by the maestro of comedy. I did not like it much when I saw it for the first time mostly due to the fact that I did not understand quite a lot, but later, as I watched it in my native language, I got amazed by Mr Norman Wisdom’s genius again.

It’s damn funny with tons of funny episodes Check out the one with those two nosey neighbours behind the door (the old lady jerks her head and hits the chin of the man – it sounds simply outstanding and looks totally stupid).

Great timing and performance… yes, 10 out of 10. No question.

Quite simplistic in the story perhaps, but very entertaining

I have started to become very fond of Norman Wisdom and his work. He has a very endearing wide-eyed innocence about him and his films are funny and quirky. On the Beat I do like a lot. I do think though it runs a little too long, and the story is on the simplistic side of things. However, I loved the luscious black and white photography and well-constructed sets and scenery. The score is suitably quirky, and the script I think is sublime with a nice balance of humour and poignancy. The comedy is quite standard and not always original, but it succeeded in being funny, I especially liked the parts with the stilts and nosey neighbours. Norman Wisdom himself is great as he always is too. All in all, very entertaining film if not quite a favourite. 8/10 Bethany Cox
