Rites of Spring Movie Reviews

Aren’t the Annual Disappearances Enough of a Clue?

An opening title card for “Rites of Spring” tells us that five teenage girls went missing on the first day of spring in 1984, and that a string of other young girls went missing the following year, again on the first day of spring, and that these disappearances continued annually for the next twenty-four years. We’re never told what state this happened in, although the film is littered with shots of cornfields, dilapidated barns, and rusty water towers, so it’s obviously somewhere in the Midwest, maybe Iowa or Wisconsin. Because of a passing cop car, we do know that the name of the town is, ironically, Hope Springs. But never mind; the important thing is that none of the bodies were ever recovered. How ominous. This could, perhaps, play into the cliché of passing off a horror movie as a dramatization of an actual incident. We’ll never know, of course, since the words “inspired by true events” weren’t used in the ads.

The futility of applying logic to a movie like this is not lost on me, but I’m forced to wonder about the population of Hope Springs. Given twenty-four consecutive years of disappearances on the same day, you’d think someone somewhere would have noticed a pattern beginning to form, and therefore would have been motivated to hightail it out of there. At the very least, you’d think all the parents would have the decency to send their young daughters away for their own protection. But no; not only is Hope Springs still a thriving community, it also seems as if no one is aware of what has been happening all these years. The opening scene, in which two twentysomething women leave a bar after midnight and are immediately kidnapped by a hooded man with a chloroform-soaked rag, makes this abundantly clear. So too does a scene in which two people enter an old house and discover a hidden room with dozens of pictures and newspaper clippings pinned to the wall.

At this point, the film splits into two plot lines. In one, the two kidnapped women (Anessa Ramsey and Hannah Bryan) awaken to find themselves hanging by their wrists in a dusty old barn. Their kidnapper, an old man known only as The Stranger (Marco St. John), enters the room and asks one of them if she’s clean. He then collects samples of their blood and tosses them into a pit, at which point some … some creature stirs out of a slumber. Later on, The Stranger cuts all the clothes off of one of the girls, covers her head with a goat mask, and gives her a sponge bath. How boring that his use of the word “clean” was literal. In between these moments, the two women cry, scream, hyperventilate, ask each other what’s happening to them, and make promises that one will not leave the other behind. We also see The Stranger praying in a room decorated with toy horses and using a goat’s skull to pay homage in front of a vast cornfield.

In the other plot line, a young man named Ben (A.J. Bowen) is drawn into a scheme to extort money from a wealthy businessman named Ryan Hayden (James Bartz). The mastermind, Paul (Sonny Marinelli), is cold and ruthless, whereas Ben clearly does not have the temperament for this kind of thing. Regardless, they succeed in killing Hayden’s wife and kidnapping his daughter, Kelly (Skylar Page Burke), although there’s the unexpected addition of Kelly’s babysitter, who saw Paul’s face. They take Kelly to a conveniently abandoned factory and begin making their demands for $2 million in unmarked, unprocessed tens and twenties. Sent to pick up the money is Ben’s brother, Tommy (Andrew Breland). Little does anyone know that Hayden is the not the kind of man you want to screw with.

For the first half of the film, we’re struggling to figure out how these two stories are connected. When all is made clear, we’re more infuriated than satisfied. That’s because, in spite of the history certain characters share, which decency prevents me from revealing, writer/director Padraig Reynolds either didn’t realize or didn’t care that he made two completely different movies. Their convergence in the final act is actually one step below a contrivance; it literally seems as if scenes from a crime thriller and a slasher/creature feature were spliced together in the editing room with only the hope that a cohesive storyline would somehow emerge. Ed Wood turned that level of artistic incompetence into an endearing form of camp. A viewing or two of “Glen or Glenda” might actually do Reynolds some good.

The Internet Movie Database dubs the main antagonist Creature, although the end credits refer to him as Worm Face, and indeed, select close-up shots reveal a head with worms crawling on it. We don’t really know what the hell he is; he has the proportions of a regular albeit tall man, although his face is anything but human, and miraculously, I could tell this despite the fact that his head was wrapped in some kind of cloth. We do know that his weapon of choice is a sickle blade attached to a long stick, and there will be many scenes near the end of him chasing people, not just though the abandoned factory but also through cornfields, which is only appropriate. The final scene of “Rites of Springs” is immensely unsatisfying, not only because of the caviler attitude with which Reynolds regards loose ends but also because of a post credit scene that amounts to overkill. This is such a poor effort. How could it have earned a theatrical release?

More Wrong than Rites…

Low budget slasher, that copies most of it’s ideas from Jeepers creepers 1 & 2.

It takes at least 20 minutes to even get going (and by that I mean for something.. hell anything interesting to happen!) I watched this film because of the reviews on IMDb which said said the gore was cool.. Where? when? Two badly done fake blood splatters and one comical rubber finger slice later any hope I had Rites of Spring being any better than a bad student film project left.

Better films (..as in the plot, acting or effects) in this genre are..

Husk [2011] Triangle [2009] Summers Blood [2009] The Collector [2009] Amusement [2008} Kill Theory [2009].. If you haven’t seen one those films I suggest you do over Rites of Spring.

Even the ending sucked big time.

Avoid!

Not for picky viewers.

If Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and The Creeper (Jeepers Creepers) were to have a baby, Wormface would be the result. It’s a low-budget slasher/creature movie that didn’t knock my socks off, but didn’t leave me gagging either…Well, not too much.

If you’re not too anal retentive about your horror movies, the film in itself is not as bad as the others I’ve seen where I wanted to pour bleach in my eyes after seeing the first 5 minutes, sometimes less. You just have to understand that this movie is not up to par with the great horror classics. It’s unoriginal, cliché-ridden and there are numerous flaws as you go along.

However, the actors are good and the cinematography is not bad either. Their shots of the corn field reminded me of Husk, which is an excellent film, by the way. The ending would probably leave you scratching your head, thinking WTF just happened. There are some loose ends left in the story that attempted to add some mystery, but failed.

In short, it’s like an appetizer film that would be good to watch on a lazy night. It’s watchable, if your expectations are not that high.

Bloodmoon Movie Reviews

Australia’s attempt at slasher

Plot = A private girls school St Elizabeth’s becomes a terrifying place to be, when girls begin to get killed off by maniacal killer and quickly buried, the police become baffled at these disappearances in a small town in Australia.

This was Australia’s effort at the ever growing popular slasher boom that started in the early 80’s but unfortunately this came out in 1990, which was when the slasher boom simply died down, and this really didn’t do anything to raise to dying craze.

Okay this isn’t a bad movie I actually quite enjoyed it, although the murder scenes are either quite tame or off-screen which I hate, apart from the scene where a girl has her face smashed into a desk, which is this movie’s main highlight in my opinion. But what annoyed me at times is the random interactions between the teen cast as some we see for the first part of the movie but when the killings start again we never see them again. And the fact that the killer is revealed quite early on.

The acting is fairly good by some, but fairly bad by others. Leon Lissik was quite enjoyable as the biology teacher Miles Sheffield who I really felt for when he was being cruelly dominated by his wife the head mistress, I also liked how his character quickly developed his true colours ranging really well. His wife Virginia (Christine Amor) did okay playing a total bitch but other than that she was a terrible actress. Helen Thomson played the final girl pretty well, very likable and attractive a character to root for and the nun played by Hazel Howman really kicked ass, especially in the end when she throws acid in the killer’s face, she was cool.

All in all a routine slasher flick that won’t break any new ground but was a fun waste of time.

Sex equals death.

By reputation “Bloodmoon” doesn’t seem to stand up so well, nonetheless it just seemed to draw me in (well captivating poster artwork helps a lot too) and since it just got a local DVD release (thanks to the 2008 documentary “Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!”) it was easy to get a hold of. It turned out to be competently stylish, but a generically penned (if sexually charged) Aussie slasher that after the opening sequence it seems to find itself in soapy TV material. This aspect is rather distracting and stodgy, before it finally goes on to build a head of steam for the last half hour of outrageous acts and jarring suspense. While not particularly successful as a whole, as it can be sloppy it still kept me watching. Something about the choice of locations constructs an effective small coastal town atmosphere (very similar to that of 1981 quirky Australian slasher “Dead Kids”) and it’s lit with moody visual shadings by director Alec Mills. The stalk and slash scenes are actually well executed and framed, especially in the latter half with a couple twisted acts of uncontrollable violence… but when the focus (during some long periods) is on the dramas / antics of the locals and a group of neighbouring boarding schools (girls and boys — who are on heat with constant flashes of female nudity) the suspense is truly forgotten about and its kept grounded with an authentic flavour but the cheesy handling doesn’t help and so did the lack of any development of recurring characters / side-stories. The patchy story doesn’t really offer any surprises (well maybe one moment — a death towards the end) and the revelation of the killer midway though shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Actually I thought it was better off unmasking the killer, because it was obvious but their choice of weapon a piece of barb wire would leave an unpleasant mark. The performances are surefooted with the likes of Christine Amor (immensely dominating), Leon Lissek (unusually picture-perfect), Ian Williams and Helen Thomson. Australian music composer Brian May has crafted out some stunning scores, but on this occasion it isn’t one of his best in what is a vibrant, but heavy-handed arrangement. When it was being ominous it worked, but for those softer and playful cues it doesn’t come off. It just lacked the fineness. Nothing sensational, but a better than labelled slasher.

Two movies for the price of one.

The first half is a generic slasher film that follows the sex-and-death formula dutifully, has waaaay too much filler and suffers from a strange lack of central characters; the glimpses of gratuitous nudity are virtually all this half has going for it. Then the killer is revealed, and the rest of the film looks as if it was made by a different director; one who knows a thing or two about suspense, and how to actually quicken your pulse. There are two major confrontations with the killer, and they are both particularly well-handled. I really don’t know what happened midway through production, but just as you’re ready to give up on the movie, it surprises you by turning out not-too-bad after all. By the way, be careful when you read some of the other reviews for this movie, they include some pretty big spoilers! (**)

Child Bride Movie Reviews

Exploitation “classic” is more silly than shocking

Exploitation classic thats more humorous now then either titillating or shocking. This is an anti-child bride film. Yes there was a time when young, even preteen girls could get married to older men. This is the story of a young girl who may be doomed to suffer such a fate. A serious subject, the film is now very silly with some acting styles that went out of style in the early days of silents (Watch the scene when Jennie gets up in the morning and try not to fall on the floor laughing.) Give the film points for having some realer characters than many backwoods films coming from Hollywood, but take a few away since this film is really just an exploitation film. Notorious for a brief flash of nudity in a skinny dipping scene by the then 12 year old star (some prints excise it) its nothing even remotely titillating or sexy. Its actually done in such away as to be fleeting and not even clear. I probably shouldn’t have even mentioned it except some people are shocked or horrified by it. The film itself is better than it should be, however its still not very good. As I said much of it plays more humorous than serious and its so creaky that you can see the machine like plot clacking away towards its conclusion where you end up on the edge of your seat waiting to see if Jennie will suffer a fate worse then death.(Its much less over the top than say a film like Reefer Madness where you can laugh at it, which takes away much of the fun) If you’re a fan of creaky exploitation films give it a try. All others stay away.

What the “Simple Folk” do.

Shot on the cheap using atmospheric scenery, decent set decoration and moody photography comes this expose’ of the times. If you can endure the amateur acting and pedestrian script delivered by an ensemble cast of jug tippin mouth breathers, this film genuinely pack quite a wallop. Even more so now.

The story is set in a rural township deep in the Ozark hills where the adult men of the area spend their days standing around discussing how the “women folk” are getting fewer in number and that the town’s under-age girls are “ripe for the pickin” as brides and laborers. One such fellow, Jake (Warner Richmond), sets his sights on young Jennie (Shirley Mills). He has already been intimate with Jennie’s still married mother (Dorothy Carrol) and now has lust in his heart for the younger version.

To complicate matters Jake is in a partnership with Jennie’s pappy(George Humphreys) operating the local still. They have a knock down, drag out brawl over money and Jake swears revenge after getting the tar whipped out of him.

Cut to the next scene where Jennie and her boyfriend Freddie head for the local watering hole for a little midday swim. This gives the filmmakers the opportunity to exploit young Jennie by showing her fully disrobing and taking an extended swim alone in crystal clear water that leaves nothing to the viewer’s imagination. Heck, even Jennie’s pet German Shepherd (unbilled) jumps in.

All of this frolicking around is observed by Jake leering from atop a nearby hill (with his mother, no less, standing right next to him!). Watching his reaction to the activities below is, in a word, disturbing.

In short order that night, Jennie’s Pa is wounded by her Ma after a heated “throw-around” inside their cabin. This is seen by Jake who is lurking around outside, window peeping. He enters the cabin and finishes off Pa and then blackmails Ma by convincing her that she was the one who did the dirty deed. He’ll get rid of the body and keep quiet if Ma consents to his taking Jennie for a bride.

The wedding ensues (you’ll want to wipe “your” mouth when Jake kisses the bride) but Jake is shot and killed while preparing for his wedding night bliss. Who shot Jake? No, not Jennie. Not Jennie’s Ma, and not young Freddie (even though he is outside the newlywed’s bedroom window with his gun). And no, it wasn’t Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Happy, Sneezy, Sleepy or Dopey. But you’d be getting close. To get the answer you’ll just have to experience it for yourself.

How this movie passed through the censors remains a mystery. Shirley Mills (Incorrectly spelled “Miles” on the DVD box) was a mere twelve years old when the film was released. The frequent inuendo, stilted dialog, and the bare flesh exposed would never make it to the screen today, at least not using a real preteen and this storyline. Two years later Ms. Mills would play Ruthie in the John Ford classic “The Grapes Of Wrath”.

This film gets a “4” for production but a “10” for sleaze.

Definitely one for the books!

Child Bride

Director: Harry J. Revier, Cast: Shirley Mills, Bob Bollinger, Warner Richmond, Angelo Rossitto.

1930’s “exploitation” film about the backwoods/backward people of the Ozarks where it is considered acceptable for much older men to marry young adolescent girls. The local school teacher, with the help of her assistant D.A. boyfriend, are trying to have this practice stopped. Anyhow, young Jenny(played by Shirley Mills) is forced to marry much older Jake(played by Warner Richmond). Without giving away the story, Jake blackmails Jenny’s mom into letting him wed her daughter.

The way the hillbillies are portrayed in this film is amusing. I got a kick out of the dilapidated old schoolhouse with pigeons on the rafters! Casper’s Scare School Storyline

In CASPER’S SCARE SCHOOL, Casper has a new assignment: get in touch with his spooky side and start scaring “fleshies” OR ELSE! It’s a tough enough challenge for the world’s friendliest ghost. But when he goes to Scare School to learn his craft, he uncovers a plot by Alder and Dash, the cruel, two-headed headmaster, to take over the world. With only himself and his misfit pals Ra, a mummy with “unraveling issues,” and Mantha, a zombie who can’t keep her limbs on, the odds are stacked against him. But what Alder and Dash don’t realize is that the power of friendliness is greater than any evil plot, and when friends work together nothing can stop them.—Classic Media

Casper’s Scare School Movie Reviews

Growing Up With Timmy Burton

Casper the Friendly Ghost is given the Tim Burton treatment in this computer-animated cartoon with a claymation look. The powers of cuteness and niceness triumph over the old-style order in which ghosts, vampires, mummies and so forth are sent to ‘scare school’ in order to learn how to terrify ‘fleshies’.

It is interesting that in the two decades since Burton’s askew vision of horror, as shown most clearly in BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, and the animated features THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE Christmas and THE CORPSE BRIDE, that view has become mainstream to the extent that Casper the Friendly Ghost can be given the same treatment. However, the result here is viewer-friendly kiddie farce, eked out not with black humor but with puns and ‘adults make no sense’ jokes. The result is sporadically amusing, and children are likely to be entertained by it. but adults can give it a miss.

The second best follow-up to ‘Casper’, so…

The second best follow-up to ‘Casper’, so… yeah.

‘Casper’s Scare School’ arguably has the best plot of the four prequels/sequels, but remains hampered by the very poor animation – which, even for 2006, looks awful. I did recognise a few of the voices, including Kevin McDonald (aka Pleakley) and John DiMaggio (aka Bender). All in all, though, it’s another pointless production – and, thankfully, the last… at time of review, at least.

Well, it’s better than the others.

If the other Casper videos weren’t such a burden to my eyes, I’d have given them better reviews. Nothing beats the originals as well as the 1995 film. Here, the Casper series is given new light and the humor is actually well-tailored to balance that of the first film and little bit of the others. Not bad, and it’s good to see now and then, even if the continuity still is off base but… oh well, that’s Hollywood. On another note though, the animation is quite unique and calls for a different kind of review. I think it’s a little creepy, but then again what’s not to like about from the animation crew who worked on the other Tim Burton films? Not bad at all.

Wonder Women Movie Reviews

“Lady, aren’t you a little tired of playing God?”

Dr. Tsu (Nancy Kwan) has set up a secret research facility on an island where she has mastered various transplant techniques. She boasts she can transplant any part of the body – yes, that’s right, ANY part. For a hefty sum of money, she offers the wealthy a chance for immortality by placing their brains into the body of a young, virile athlete. Her island fortress is guarded by an army of beautiful, but deadly women who also work to procure the doctor her healthy subjects. Her latest acquisition, a local jai-alai player, unwittingly draws the interest of an insurance investigator from Lloyd’s of London who had a policy on the young man. In turn, he hires former CIA agent Mike Harber (Ross Hagen) to investigate. Before you can say “Ross Hagen produced this thing so you know he’s going to come out looking good in the end”, Harber is taken prisoner by Dr. Tsu and given the long, overly drawn out explanation of her work and her plans. In the end, Harber’s powers of seduction have been enough to turn one of the women against Dr. Tsu and he escapes with the jai-alai player. The end.

What a wild piece of 70s trash! While not good in any traditional sense, that’s never stopped me from enjoying a movie. There are, however, three things you ought to know before watching The Deadly and the Beautiful (or Wonder Women as it’s sometimes known): it’s a cheaply made Filipino film, it’s got a gaggle of scantily clad beauties, and it was produced by and stars Ross Hagen. The cheap/Filipino thing doesn’t really bother me. It’s probably part of what makes the movie so unique. And you’ve just got to love the 70s porn-inspired soundtrack. Too funny. The gaggle of scantily clad beauties – I’m not going to complain about that either. Though I must admit I did laugh out loud watching the army of women with every weapon imaginable set out into the jungle wearing what amounted to the most inappropriately imaginable short chiffon mini-nightgowns. I don’t think nighties are standard issue for any other army in the world. And their style of hand-to-hand combat must be seen to be believed. I’ve heard of all sorts of styles or martial arts fighting, but nothing quite describes the gyrations performed by Roberta Collins. Finally, I’m left with Ross Hagen. The man just has a way of turning my stomach. He reminds me a bit of a B-movie version of Chad Everett with none of the acting ability. He spends the entire movie either looking half-asleep and disinterested or ogling the women he’s supposed to be fighting. There is one brief scene with Hagen that’s an absolute scream. He’s following the Dr. Tsu down a staircase in what can only be described as full-on flounce mode. You know, ridiculous expression on his face, arms bent at the elbow and wrist, and legs doing sort of a trot – looks a bit like he’s auditioning for a part in the Village People. Too funny. And then there’s the scene where Ross gets to do something called “brain sex” with Nancy Kwan. Just about lost my lunch watching Ross’ faux-orgasmic squirm on that vinyl seat. Yuck!

Oh yes, as for the movie – it is what it is – a cheap piece of 70s exploitation junk that’s worth a watch if you’re into that sort of thing. For me, I had a great time with it. It was also cool to see Sid Haig in a different sort of role (I just realized that I have no idea what happened to his character). For all the wrong reasons, I’ll give The Deadly and the Beautiful a 7/10.

Funky Filipino fun.

After the mysterious disappearance of one of the biggest names in Jai alai (a variation of the sport pelota), insurance investigator Mike Harber (Ross Hagen) is hired to try and find the missing sportsman. Mike’s search leads him to the heavily guarded island fortress of Dr. Tsu (Nancy Kwan), where the unscrupulous surgeon has been harvesting the bodies of athletes abducted by her all-female army and using their limbs and organs in illegal transplant operations for the super-rich.

Opening with a scene in which several topless female swimmers are abducted by Dr. Tsu’s sexy hench-women, this early 70s USA/Philippines production starts as it means to go on by being unashamedly exploitative trash. As his film unfolds, director Robert Vincent O’Neill (who also gave us the equally exploitative Angel and Avenging Angel) piles on the outlandishness, delivering a prolonged chase scene through the streets of Manila (which involves some particularly perilous looking stunts), some really bad fight scenes (his actresses clearly total strangers to the martial arts), lots of leggy babes in revealing outfits, and a very silly finale that sees a bunch of Dr. Tsu’s failed experiments running amok on the island (the daft creatures including a half man/half ape and a guy who sports a glass cranium with an orange beacon inside). All of this is accompanied by a cool funky ’70s soundtrack.

The movie’s kitschy style also adds immensely to the fun factor: there are go-go boots and hot-pants aplenty, Dr. Tsu’s operating theatre boasts cutting-edge psychedelic coloured lighting and swirly hypno-discs (while her PVC operating gown is the height of ’70s surgical fashion), and Mike samples the delights of ‘brain sex’ via a silly high-tech headband covered with diodes.

Add supporting roles for cult favourites Vic Dias and Sid Haig, and what you have is a delightfully daft piece of nonsense—not great film-making by any stretch of the imagination—but highly entertaining nonetheless.

It becomes better as years pass upon it…

This spy satire, in which a nasty female “Dr. No” (Nancy Kwan) trains a number of women assassins to go out and win the world for her, is rather inane entertainment. However, having seen dozens like it, with better heroes than Ross Hagen, there are so many vivid scenes in my mind that it must be better than most! Cinematography and direction were certainly above medium, and Marilyn Joi and Maria de Aragon are wonderful bad girls.

Child Bride Movie Reviews

Other reviewers have made comments about the nudie skinny dipping scene. There is nothing about it that should trouble anyone. There is a huge difference between pornography and nudity. Yes Shirley Mills was just twelve years old in this movie but there absolutely nothing pornographic in this film. She is simply skinny dipping. It does show her nude going into the water but it is brief and in no way distasteful. The swimming scene alone would not have made this an exploitation film. It is the overall content that makes it so. The idea of old men trying to marry little girls.

The is actually a rather interesting film and the acting although not “Gone With the Wind” material is actually alright. It certainly has a uniqueness about it that keeps the viewer interested in spite of its low budget. This is the only film for most of the actors. Warner Richmond has been in numerous films and Shirley Mills did about a handful of other films including The Grapes of Wrath. I might also add that Angelo Rossitto(the midget) has had a very long career in Hollywood. He has been in movies into the 1980’s including Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. He was in Tod Browining’s classic Freaks from 1932.

Child Bride (1938) Was Based On A 1937 News Story About A 9 Year Old Bride In Tennessee

Child Bride (1937) Was Based On A 1937 News Story About A 9 Year Old Bride In Tennessee.

The movie is wrongly identified as a 1938 movie in movie guides and on this database, but the copyright year given in the main title states (in Roman Letters) 1937.

It is a “post-code” movie and might have been done differently in the freedom of the “pre-code” movie days of the 1930’s. Food for thought.

Child Bride (1937) starring Shirley Mills was shot in Columbia, California as an independent movie 78 years ago (this is written in 2015) and is still alive and well, is currently sold in DVD video form and available for screening on home computers for free since the movie is now in the public domain.

It is a famous movie made during the Golden Age Of Big Studio Hollywood made outside the big studio system which lasted and lasted and lasted. It is a classic in its way.

Filmmakers created a story and a movie script, recruited a cast and technical crew, and shot the entire movie in two weeks in 1938.

The production values of the movie are very high and amazing considering the obviously low budget and lack of “big studio” resources the movie had.

We see torrential downpour rain scenes, snow scenes, fights/ wrestling boxing matches between men done skillfully.

The movie even includes a nighttime “torchlight” parade done “Ku Klux Klan” style when the bad guys abduct the noble (pretty, young adult crusading against child marriage) school teacher to a ceremonial outdoor place where she is to be “sacrificed” (the sacrifice is interrupted, but the whole scene is a cliffhanger well done in film noir style).

The movie has many night scenes where the weather and the bad weather skies in the mountains are shown complete with lightning flashes, wind….just like (well…similar too) “The Wizard Of Oz” (1939) bad weather/ cyclone scenes in Kansas.

But without big MGM money, sound stages, or expensive production talent.

The acting and casting are all very good and believable, including small parts.

The movie even includes a highly trained, charming dog which climbs and descends steep cliffs, and swims at length with lead actress Shirley Mills at a large mountain stream style “old swimming hole.” The dog is charming, little “mermaid” Shirley Mills is charming, and the onlooking supporting actors include an old lady, a young 12 year old boy, and the adult villain male of the movie…all good actors, all quite compelling in minor roles.

Movies are hard to make, hard to get to come out well, and it is obvious that one of the reasons this great movie has lasted for almost 80 years (copyright in the title is given as 1937) is that it is well crafted and very watchable.

The script includes humor, suspense, and well crafted characters ranging from moonshiners in the boondocks to the Governor of the (unnamed) state listening carefully to the pleas of a young lawyer for changes in the state law regarding (still legal in 1937) child marriage.

The actor playing the Governor just listening carefully is very good, and he doesn’t have as single line to speak in the movie! The movie is still alive and well. But truly a one of a kind movie and curious in many ways.

In some ways, Child Bride (1938) was a preview of radical feminism and the puritanical parts of it proclaimed indignantly in the 1970’s, 40 years later.

The movie was about a crusading young female schoolteacher whose work results in laws outlawing marriage to very young girls.

The star of the movie, Shirley Mills (1926 – 2010), lived into her 80’s and died in 2010.

She was a celebrity at “Nostalgia Conventions” which featured old movies and memorabilia and old stars from long ago like her.

She appeared at booths at “Nostalgia Conventions” which sold DVD copies of Child Bride (1938), movie posters for it, and other collector memorabilia.

In her later life, Shirley Mills claimed that the nude scene had been done by another actress slightly older than Shirley Mills in 1938 (she was 12 that year).

That may or may not have been true, but the movie (in the public domain, anyone can see it free on a home computer using Google.Com to find it and gain access to it) shows close up shots of topless then 12 year old Shirley frolicking and splashing water on her dog. The same highly talented, well trained dog appears in other scenes and is one of important stars of the movie! The movie was about distant, unpoliced places in the USA, about mountain people not constrained by the big government, big city puritanism which took over America after the World War I years, assisted by mass communications and high speed motorized transportation, which communicated and transported propaganda and government policing, and the righteous indignation and moralizing of an increasingly puritanical America.

A movie nostalgia magazine called FilmFax (Summer 2010, No. 124 issue) described the history of the making of Child Bride (1938) in a history article written by Paul Holbrook, a movie historian who did extensive research about Child Bride.

Child Bride (1938) starring Shirley Mills was thus an example of a movie created as a result of journalistic reporting.

The Life Magazine couple shown in the Feb. 15, 1037 issue (Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Johns….she was 9, he was 22) went on to have a long life together.

The groom died in his 80’s and the bride died in her late 70’s, cared for at the end of her life by a daughter who was born as a result of the 1937 marriage.

Ozarks Exploitation

This is one of the strangest classic exploitation movies ever made, ranking with Chained For Life and The Terror of Tiny Town for sheer weirdness. The cast — largely comprised of unknowns and non-actors, but also including popular Angelo Rossitto (aka Don Barrett) the dwarf — portray a community of lascivious, drunken, lawless, moonshine-making Ozark hillbillies (in California, with Eucalyptus trees much in evidence) who want to marry little girls. Meanwhile, a schoolmarm, who has returned to her native hills to teach her fellow “mountain people” how to read, struggles against the evil custom of child marriage in a state that has, as yet, not enacted a minimum-age marriage law.

Most of the actors are not trained, but the central family of mother (Dorothy Carrol), father (George Humphreys), and daughter (Shirley Mills) are riveting in their realistic depiction of dirt-poor farm life. Mills’ diction and gestures in this film were obviously influenced by the acting style of her famous contemporary, Shirley Temple, a fact that helped her project sincere distress during the more violent and emotionally wrenching scenes. Given her role here, and the naturalness with which she plays it, it is no wonder that Mills was later tapped to play Ruthie Joad in “The Grapes of Wrath.” Angelo Rossitto, as a moonshine stiller, is at his athletic best here, clambering up and down the “Republic rocks” and engaging in an intense fight scene with a full-sized heavy, thus bringing his usual liveliness to an unusual role.

There is quite a bit of animal acting in this film, as it is set on a farm. The early morning scene in which Mills goes out to feed the pigs and gets into the pen to “rescue” a piglet, is very true to life, as is her family’s stern response to what might seem to modern eyes as a cute child-in-the-mud scene: Pigs, especially sows with piglets, can be dangerous if angered, and the film-makers knew that well enough that they did not actually place Mills in confrontation with the sow; a couple of jump-cuts show us what happened. I also enjoyed the uncredited Alsatian Police Dog who played Ritz, a well-trained canine actor with dark fur and long ears who, unless my eyes deceive me, was a Rin-Tin-Tin relative or understudy. There are also a couple of very much UNtrained milk goats in this film — a white Saanen and a black Alpine — who stand nicely to be milked (obviously the role for which they were cast), but provide some over-the-top emoting during a funeral march, as they react with panic and a determination to buck, butt, or escape whenever the dog Ritz (who is very docile) gets near them.

“Child Bride” carries an explicit moral message — “These child-marriages must be stopped!” — but, like most exploitation films, it quickly subverts its own message, in this case with extended scenes of child nudity, as barely pubescent Shirley Mills frolics in a clear mountain pool with her German Shepherd dog. Despite the child nudity, which i frankly found disturbing as it went on so long and showed so many prurient repeat shots of Mills’ backside underwater, there is some charm to this story, and enough plot twists to make it interesting. I think this is a movie that every fan of the obscure and off-beat, every fan of B-movies, and certainly every exploitation fan, will want to see.

Heart of the Hunter Movie Reviews

Underwhelming

I watched it on Netflix and it’s my first time watching an African production-based movie.

It’s not bad, this movie is decent by all standards.

The terrible issue lies with the story and the execution The pacing feels very drawn out and messy to the point I found myself getting bored of the movie.

I won’t dive into the specifics, but there are bland loopholes that sort of ruin the whole setup here. Like I want to get involved and emotionally invested in the movie. The potential is great, the transition between languages is an edge over most. Action wise it’s up to par and no issues about that.

If I had one suggestion, the story should have had more polishing and enforcing.

Absolutely Fantastic

Absolutely Fantastic. The storyline, the cinematography, and the actors. The diversity in the show is incredible. What a well-made movie. The director did so well. We need more movies like this in South Africa. It was a refreshing change from the usual drugs, taxi/micro violence and SEX-based movies we’ve been getting. What a film. I would recommend it to anyone who’s into action films. The great thing is that the action is South African based, too, on the weapons used. It’s truly a South African film in every possible way. I could go on and on. Well done to the entire team involved. No flaws exist.

Waste of my time, terrible stinker!

Oh my – that was really bad!

This was the most pointless excuse of a movie I have ever seen. I want my time back. It started off very promising and just went all the way down under the hill from there. Acting was terrible maybe because the script was so poor. So sad. I’m so angry I can’t give it less than a star. The only thing worse than sitting through it to see if it would by some chance redeem itself, was the ending. Such a waste of my time, energy and electricity. Wish I had read the reviews before watching this mess. My goodness the rubbish that passes for entertainment these days is astounding. Find something else to watch!

Cessationist Storyline

From the creators of Calvinist, Spirit and Truth, and Logic on FIre, comes a theological documentary like no other. On any given week, countless Christians gather and participate in strange practices they believe are true expressions of the power of God. From speaking in tongues to attempting to raise the dead, Charismatic and Pentecostal Christians believe they are participating in modern miracles. Are these miracles real? Are the Apostolic sign gifts in operation today? Cessationist carefully answers this important question by exposing the errors of modern Charismatic teaching and builds a positive case for the true work of the Holy Spirit today. The real gift of the Spirit is far more necessary and powerful than many imagine.—Les Lanphere

Cessationist Movie Reviews

Just an attack against beliefs they don’t have.

Someone has an agenda. I have not, nor ever will be part of the charismatic movement but never would I attack them the way this movie does. From a Christian standpoint a) they take biblical references out of context. Matthew was very much talking to a certain group of people at that time, Paul spoke those words but in context that looks much different than what is depicted here and easily seen by my 14 year old when we took the movie scriptural clips and read the whole context. Why would we as Christians support attacking vs teaching, leading to Christ and honoring/respecting his chosen?

People are free to believe all this. I’m not saying they can’t. But when you provide information like this, against a group of believing Christians, and then take things out of context it’s hard not to see the irony in what you are doing vs what is truth.

Watch the movie, go read the context of the scripture they are giving. Also note they reference things “not happening” but don’t take into account this isn’t the main theme of the Bible, there are a LOT of things not placed in there due to the irrelevance to the main subject/theme of the Bible. Jesus didn’t heal everyone that came to him and not all that were healed were documented. That goes for all the things the apostles and beyond did. Not all was documented there either. Not relevant for salvation and eternal life. So to take that and dramatically use it to prove some point is making up stuff to prove things God doesn’t even deem important to scripture.

What if these same people spent time going out and spending time with these pastors and people that they feel are being misled and just taught them the word and left all this out? Guarantee they could spend years without even getting to this subject and teach them how to respect the gifts and beyond.

A Mixed Bag

Rightly condemns false teachers, faith healers and the like. Heretics like Kenneth Copeland, Hinn, Bakker and so on.

But strings clips of godly men who are open to gifts like Sam Storms, Carson, John Piper, and others along with them but ate not faith healers or false teachers. It is a manipulative tactic to make these men look guilty by association. This documentary was not done in good faith toward other faithful men. Yes please condemn faith healers but don’t smear godly men in your own camp (reformed). I am shocked that this exists. There is no hoping snd believing all things here.

They also constantly change arguments, show partial verse quotes, and ignore key texts. Make arguments from theoretical implications of texts, and experience.

Very disappointed with this documentary.

Train Wreck Coming…

This movie is going to be a total train wreck. I watched the trailer, thinking it was exposing the fallacies of cessationism. Boy was I wrong. I grew up in a cessationist church and learned all their objections to miracles/supernatural. I came to believe otherwise, because I BELIEVED THE BIBLE for what it said. Cessationists have to scrub away and suppress promise after promise and command after command of the New Testament to hold to what boils down to merely codified doubt and unbelief. Jesus meant it when He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe (obey/do) ALL THINGS that I have commanded you (the disciples He was speaking to)…” Think about ALL the things that Jesus taught the disciples to believe and TO DO — healing the sick, casting out demons, raising the dead were among these. Then, before His ascension (and before Pentecost), He tells them to teach the nations obey and TO DO the same things they had just done in the last 3 years of ministry with Him. After 20 years of studying the Bible (since I was 5 years old when I repented and accepted Christ), I just couldn’t handle how many passages of Scripture were conveniently “explained away” by the pastors and Bible teachers I sat under. That was over 20 years ago now. I’ve learned too much of the Bible to believe otherwise, and I’m not looking back. Cessationism is not about being more “Biblical”, it’s about safe-guarding traditionalism, naturalism, rationalism and unbelief (by handpicking verses that fit this ideology) to make Christianity more “reasonable” to the world and to make ourselves feel better about living powerless Christian lives. But I found that it is merely a ” form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” (2 Tim. 3:5). He goes on to warn, ” …from such turn away.”

The Perfect Assistant Movie Reviews

A Slowburner Of A Psychological Thriller.

Be aware you have to stay with this film for it to gell together correctly. At the start of the movie, my finger was hovering over the off button for at least the first twenty minutes. I was close to the pressing point. But something in my mind stopped me from depressing the button.

The story starts out with David Prescott’s (Potter) wife Carol (Marcil) being rushed to the hospital. David contacts his personal assistant, Rachel (Davis), to bring her up to speed and to cancel and rearrange meetings until his wife is better. However, Rachel isn’t as stable as she appears. She sees David as one of the good men and is truly upset to hear about his wife. She asks how their daughter, Isabelle (Szalankiewicz) is coping. From here on in we get to see her slowly immerse herself into the Prescott’s life and family as her delusion grows. It’s this growth and the path it leads her down that makes this movie watchable. It gives the story twists and turns that show the workings of a broken mind. Her morals lose ground as her infatuation and obsession grow… how far will she go in what she believes to be true love?

I believe that had this been given to a stronger cast and director it would have been a fantastic thought-provoking and chilling film. However, what we get is an entertaining and easily watchable afternoon TV movie.

Though the direction is pretty standard for this style of flick more powerful atmosphere and tension were called for to add strength to the project. For me, the worst thing about the film was the acting. Especially from Josie Davis who is a little too over the top with her characterisation – less definitely would have been more. However, it’s not a constant thing as there are times when she’s spot on with her portrayal. Then there’s Deborah Pollitt as Nora… okay, so I actually know people like this so she conveys a realistic character, however, with Josie Davis’ performance it makes Pollitt’s idiosyncrasies more than a little irritating. One annoying character per film is enough.

Since this film surprised me I would recommend it to all psychological thriller fans, though you have to stay with it for the full effect – it’s a potboiler.

One Of The Better Ones

I really liked this movie, it was very entertaining.

Josie Davis was great as the obsessive, deluded assistant to her , fairly niave , widowed boss. She portrayed the part really well , I even found myself feeling sorry for her a few times ! , thats a compliment to her acting, not my thinking like her !!!!

This movie was definitely one of Lifetimes better ones, the acting was good ,, and the storyline, while a little farfetched , was scripted well and the characters were mostly likeable.

I do recommend it , give it a go.

Rachel’s Little Doll House

There is a revealing image in the film when the former orphan and waif, Rachel Partson, is playing with a cutaway doll house. This is the orphan’s ideal of what she never had after she lost both of her parents. Now, as an adult, Rachel wants to reclaim her birthright with the man of her dreams, her boss named David Wescott and his little daughter Isabelle.

Rachel grew up is as loving a family as one could hope for, given her circumstances as an orphan. But it was never good enough for little Rachel, as she was envious of Nora, the girl she grew up with in the kind family that provided for her. Sadly, Nora will be one of the two murder victims of the deranged Rachel in her maniacal obsession with David. Nora’s big mistake was to discover the DVD of the home movie of David that Rachel stole and to dare to insult Rachel by calling her out for her aberrant behavior.

With her leverage as David’s “executive assistant,” Rachel uses the inside information she gleans at the office to worm her way into David’s life. After murdering David’s wife Carol through lethal injection at the hospital, Rachel makes her move. Her biggest coup is to land a trip to New York with David and his little daughter Isabelle. She does so by duping the kind, immigrant nanny Ileana and by poisoning Judith Manion. But in the film’s turning point in the New York hotel, Rachel makes the fatal mistake of kissing him. That moment is the start of David’s awakening to a monster in his midst.

Stylistically, the film’s most ingenious moments were brief soliloquys, wherein we hear Rachel thinking out loud as she masterminds her plot to woo and win David. Whether alone in the bathroom or the elevator, Rachel reveals to us the workings of her wacko mind as she thinks aloud. Her mind keep coming back to the notion that David loves her, despite all the evidence to the contrary. When Rachel blurts out lines like “This can’t happen!,” we know that she means business!

The best of the secondary characters is the wily Wally, one of Rachel’s co-workers in the Wescott firm. Wally is the office gossip, who reveals information which Rachel uses to blackmail Grady, who drops out of the competition for the Kirkland account that will save David’s company.

When Rachel crashes the party at the celebratory banquet, she is actually correct when she tells the group at gunpoint that that the employees should be grateful to her for saving their jobs and avoiding eating convenience store sandwiches while standing in the unemployment line. But her means to the end suggest that her talents would be more suited to a long-term stay in a mental institution. It is there that Rachel Partson may finally get the help that she needs.

Project: Metalbeast Storyline

In 1974, amoral CIA agent Butler and his inexperienced young colleague locate a Hungarian castle where, according to classified CIA data, a werewolf lives. Their mission is to take a sample of its blood and bring it back to the States for research. The idea is to eventually create an army of soldiers with werewolf-like abilities and resistance to harm. This secret project is dubbed Project: Metalbeast. However, the research is slow and they eventually nearly run out of werewolf blood, so Butler, unhinged, injects himself with the little blood that’s left and turns into a werewolf. He goes on a killing spree inside of the CIA research facility but is shot with silver bullets by his boss, Miller. Miller covers everything up and arranges for Butler and his victims’ bodies to be cryogenically frozen. 20 years later, a team of medical scientists led by doctor Anna de Carlo, who’s obsessed with finding a way to create artificial skin that could help those in need of skin transplant, is ordered by Miller to experiment with their prototype of synthetic skin on Butler’s corpse. Miller is increasingly showing signs of insanity and doesn’t tell them what Butler is. When they find the bullets inside of the Butler’s body and remove them, all hell breaks loose in the facility. To make matters worse, the artificial skin they transplanted makes Bulter’s werewolf skin impenetrable.

Project: Metalbeast Movie Reviews

A decent way to kill 90 minutes,

After finding, killing and extracting a blood sample from a werewolf in Europe, a soldier injects himself with it’s DNA, turning himself into a werewolf in an American military base, where he’s captured and cryogenically frozen. Flash foreword 10 years, where scientists are given the man’s body for an experiment involving a metal-based, organic, self-restoring skin. Upon giving the soldier the skin graph, he awakens and turns into a werewolf, but this time faster, meaner, shinier and bullet proof. I picked this movie up the other day from my local video store for $2, as they are going out of business and need to sell all their videos. I grabbed as many as I could carry home, “Project: Metalbeast” being one of them. Despite the terrible title and having heard nothing of it before, “Metalbeast” turned out to be an okay way to kill 90 minutes in my book. It’s got a script that’s more intelligent than your usual straight-to-video horror flick, a decent score, some likable characters, a couple of gory bits (the highlight being the death of the creature at the end), and even John Carl Buechler’s creature effects weren’t bad, though the Metalbeast itself looks more like a Hedgehog on crack than a werewolf. Granted, the film never steps very far out of genre territory, and the portrayal of both the scientists and the military are as clichéd as can be but in the end, “Project: Metalbeast” offered a fine dose of gore, monster action, and a interesting concept that puts a nice spin on the werewolf myth.

$2 well spent, I say.

6/10.

nightmarish medical thriller meets werewolf horror

Here’s an original concept; T.V. actor, John Marzill is an ego-maniacal special forces type that injects himself with werewolf blood in order to transform into a keen, immortal creature at will. Barry Boswick is an evil government colonel that stops him with silver bullets, freezes the corpse, and hires B-movie beauty, Kim Delaney as an experimental skin doctor to develop metal armor skin tissue in order to create a “controllable”, indestructible killing machine. Of course, the plan goes haywire, and after removing the silver bullets (during a full moon no less), Marzill awakens as the super-werewolf (which is Kane Hodder in an excellent costume).

Its a surprisingly good blend of sci-fi genetic mutating monster mayhem, and writer/director, Alessandro De Gaetano avoids most of the clichés and contrivances while crafting this rip-roaring action piece. Kim Delaney delivers an above-average performance, Barry Boswick is good as an emotionless bad-guy, and Kane Hodder is unrecognizable as the menacing metalbeast. It’s a cut above once the monster gets loose and goes on a murderous rampage in the facility, while poor Delaney and co-workers must get away from both the beast and Boswick. This also has one of the best B-movie werewolf creatures ever, especially for a direct-to-video release. Its a howl!!

Underrated effort with some great moments

Acquiring a new corpse for her project, a doctor finds they used the specimen of a soldier bitten by a werewolf and now infused with metal skin and hunting them down, forcing them to fight off the ravenous creature.

Overall this one turned out to be quite an enjoyable and entertaining offering. One of the many positive points here is the fact of this one featuring a pretty novel idea of the werewolf here being infused with a metallic armor underneath his skin as part of a shady military experiment, all of which is composed of the first half here. The secretive nature of their assignment coupled with the given nature of the material comes off rather nicely with the whole affair coming off well to set the stage for the fun later on. That comes in the form of this one’s rather impressive series of stalking scenes throughout the facility where there’s plenty of scenes from the wolf’s POV down the corridors and throughout the facility. From the brutal attacks on the security guards on the front of the building, to the rather gory and graphic attacks in the operating rooms there’s some good stuff here that mixes the action and suspense rather well before getting involved in the film’s best part which is the finale. Using the multi-tiered facility to its’ best by staging the action throughout the various levels, including an amazing stalking chase through an endless corridor of pipes and letting the werewolf get center-stage with several showpiece kills drawing a lot of impressive blood and gore, this one is quite fun and matches the opening hunt for an overall enjoyable bookend to the film. As well, the look of the titular werewolf is one of the best in the genre with its fearsome snout, imposing muscular frame, huge claws and metal skin all leave a viable impression here which all manage to help this one overcome the minor plot-points plaguing this one. The biggest problem here is their complete lack of questioning his instructions on their ranking here which seems to exist for completely arbitrary means here in forcing along the plot that makes no sense. Stumbling upon the corpse accidentally would’ve been a far better use here, yet this one decides on the course that makes him out to be a prick and the group into clueless bystanders that dominate the first half and drags this to a halt at times. That’s apart from the other implausibilities of the film. One of the main ones is that no reinforcements are called in when the Metalbeast escapes, which goes against military policy yet there’s also the fact that it would’ve boosted the kill count, which no film should be against. That is as damning to the film as anything, except for the nonsensical plot. Otherwise, this one was rather enjoyable.

Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

He also says that Alin has a history with Guney, and hence they need solid evidence against him.Alin decides she’s going to use her charm to catch Guney red-handed.When Alin approaches Guney, he asks her for a second chance, and she pretends to reluctantly give in. Guney explains that he ran away the first time as he was scared of commitment. In the meantime, Ozan has the information to figure out who is working with Guney now, and they also find a warehouse where they work. Alin tries to go there and get some evidence, but she’s caught by Vera, Guney’s hacker.Vera and Alin get into a physical fight, leading Vera to believe Alin is a cop. But she only manages to see her eyes as Alin was wise enough to cover her face. From the recovered material, Alin figures out that the next theft will be in Prague.Alin and Guney spend more time together, and he tells her that he doesn’t want to spend time apart, but he has a business trip to Prague for two days. Alin convinces him to take her along. This is when she gets the billionaire treatment, and he takes her on a private jet and gifts her fancy new clothes. On the flight, Vera finds something strange about Alin and tells the other guy on their team, Omer (Hakan Ummak), that she might have been the cop who tried to break into the warehouse. At the time, Guney had dismissed the idea and said it must have been a random break-in.Alin’s partner shows up at the hotel, saying she can’t be doing a mission that her chief denied, but she’s determined to catch Guney. However, Ozan thinks it’s just her attraction to him that’s keeping her there.Guney takes Alin to a private dress rehearsal for a romantic musical she’s been wanting to watch, and it is enough for her to fall for Guney again. Alin and Guney almost go all the way in his hotel room, but Alin claims they’re going too fast and leaves. The next day is the day of the robbery, and Guney leaves Alin with a car to use all day while he has some work. The second he’s gone, Ozan and she follow him. Yet again, they’re unable to catch him, and they’re back to Istanbul and square one.Faysal Varli is an old man and a sleaze who is a businessman, and Guney plans on buying his company. Faysal has a private painting collection. He gives Alin and Guney a private viewing of this collection, and immediately, Alin realizes they’re all stolen. This gives Guney the idea to break into the highly protected collection. This is a foolproof security system with too many layers, yet Guney has the confidence to break into it. There’s a voice and face recognition step, and there are about 75 cameras leading up to the collection, so it’s almost an impossible task. Additionally, there’s a set of words, like a pass key, that keeps changing, that Faysal himself has to repeat for the vault to open. It’s his voice that’s recognized, but Guney has a solution for it all.Just as Guney is trying to break in and everything is going to plan, Faysal decides to bring a woman down to the vault. Vera freaks out, but just when they’re about to enter the room, Faysal is asked to go back to the house.Alin is there to tell Faysal that his collection is going to be stolen from him, but he doesn’t believe her. She tells him that she doesn’t know who it will be, but she knows there’s a plan. This is obviously not the answer he wants, so he chokes her to try and get her to spill, but Ozan shows up at that moment. He asks for the crime scene, but Faysal tells him to leave if he doesn’t have a warrant. Alin decides the best thing to do is leave and take Ozan and the team with her.The next day, Faysal shows up in her bedroom, and finds out it was Guney who stole the painting thanks to her notes in her apartment with all the investigation on Guney. Alin tries to find Guney to warn him and tell him the truth.Guney already knew that Alin worked for Interpol, and he left a trail for her to find him on purpose.Guney had disappeared for some time without a trace because he was caught in Mexico. This left Alin heartbroken because he never reached out to her or told her anything about what he used to do. After 3 years, he did a press conference to show up on the grid again, but by this time, Alin had already started to work for Interpol in Paris. Apparently, he found it really hard to find her, and when he did, he couldn’t just tell her he was a thief. So now, he basically made her go in circles to fall in love with him again. Guney takes Alin to his grandfather’s house. It seems he got interested in art thanks to his grandfather, who was a wonderful painter but was never recognized for his work. However, the reason Guney decided to start stealing is because when they were first together, Alin told him that the Mona Lisa went up in value only after it got stolen.Faysal stands across from Guney and Alin in front of a lake, a dead end. Faysal shoots past Guney’s ear, just missing him to threaten him. This is after Guney has been tormenting Alin to tell him she still loves him all the way while running away from Faysal. Just as Faysal is about to shoot again, Ozan shows up.Guney did Ozan a favor by giving him information about Faysal (when Guney broke into Faysal’s vault, he found information and documents that linked Faysal to the drugs trade); in return, Ozan will leave Guney alone because he’s only a harmless art and heart stealing person. Since Ozan is an ex-narcotics officer, he is, of course, thrilled to lock up Faysal.Alin promises not to turn Guney in and tells him she loves him. There are two options, one is that Alin stops working for Interpol so that she and Guney can go on a robbing spree since they won’t really have anything else to do and they’re both clearly so interested in art.On the other hand, Guney will stop stealing for the thrill of it and go back to being just a boring old billionaire. Or maybe they start an underground art gallery together with all the stolen pieces and never get found out.

Art of Love Movie Reviews

Sorry but a waste of time

The plot is so overused in many movies and video clips and they gave the worst version of it.

The movie is more like a tourism advertisement for beautiful places, they focused more on the cinematography which was the only positive thing for me, but in an exaggerated way The name doesn’t meet the content (Romance & comedy nerde !!!!!!!??????) + the acting level is low and boring. I’ve watched Birkan in (Masumlar Apartmani,Hayat Sarkisi and Yüz Yillik Mucize) and Esra (Ertugrul,Ramo) before their performances were way too better, here seems like they are faking it!

Their chemistry is 6/10 beautiful but not wow.

This movie is a “Romantic Comedy” ….Except There’s No Romance or Comedy

The movie claims to be a romantic comedy but there is literally no romance or humor to be found. The characters, both individually and as a couple, lack development, making it difficult to invest in their relationship. There’s zero foundation for their connection or emotional journey. They just throw these two actors together with a revolving door of hair styles/colors and skimpy outfits (most with absolutely no relevance to the plot, by the way), Plus, they throw in random smooches with no build-up, no emotional depth, just a slapdash attempt to fulfill some quota.

It is obvious the movie was deliberately made to appeal to an audience that like shallow, lusty content (and Netflix is making lot of that kinda stuff lately) regardless of any story line. But for anyone craving a shred of romance, story, or even a chuckle, you’ll be seriously disappointed.

What’s truly baffling is that for such low-class, trashy film with no atristic merit, they managed to sign up Brikan and Esra! These are actors with serious chops (remember Brikan as Han in The Innocents, or Esra’s phenomenal performance as Madame Corinne in Ataturk or Sibel in Ramo). Usually, it’s unknown or unestablished actors desperate for a break who take on such trashy and vulgar roles.

One has to wonder if such demeaning roles will cheapen the brand of the lead actors and hurt their standing in serious acting circles. As a huge fan of both of these stars, it honestly saddens me to see them doing these kind of cheap roles.

Lackluster Scriptwriting

Despite good cinematography and captivating locations, the movie falls flat with its clichéd plot, lackluster scriptwriting, and subpar acting. The revelation that the art thief is the protagonist’s ex-lover feels contrived, and the attempts to inject suspense fall short due to predictable twists. The performances are hardly adequate and they struggle to breathe life into characters that feel one-dimensional and lacking in depth. The chemistry between the leads, meant to ignite the screen with passion and conflict, fizzles rather than sparks, making it difficult for viewers to invest in their journey. While the visuals offer moments of aesthetic pleasure, they can’t compensate for the film’s overall lack of substance. The movie may dazzle the eyes, but it leaves much to be desired in terms of storytelling and execution.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Movie Reviews

“In the name of all the flocking blind cripples, I beseech you”

I’ve seen a number of different film adaptations of The Hound of the Baskervilles, so I thought I might enjoy a spoof of this familiar story. Also, I’ve seen some of the other work Peter Cook and Dudley Moore did together and thought they might have a chance at success with such a project. My reaction, well if you’ve been on IMDb for any length of time, you’ve probably seen the well thought out response “It Sux” when someone is asked about their opinion on a given film. Well, “It Sux” pretty well sums up my feelings to the abomination that is The Hound of the Baskervilles. It is a complete waste of time and effort. I can’t imagine how two talented individuals like Cook and Moore could have concocted such a disaster of a film. It’s nothing short of a chore to sit through the thing. It’s the complete opposite of funny. In addition to Cook and Moore, there’s a good cast assembled including Joan Greenwood, Denholm Elliot, Hugh Griffith, and the usually entertaining Terry-Thomas. I actually started to feel embarrassed for these talented actors. What were they thinking? And where in the world did the scenes taken from The Exorcist come from? I don’t remember any pea soup spitting in Doyle’s original work.

I actually bought The Hound of the Baskervilles on DVD. I’m glad it only set me back $3, because the 2/10 I’ve rated the movie may actually be overstating things a bit.

A ‘comic’ retelling of a classic story

This story sees Holmes being approached by Dr Mortimer to investigate the death of the owner of Baskerville Hall. While the death is officially natural causes it is suspected that the real cause may be a beast known as the Hound of the Baskervilles. Holmes declines the case but passes it on to Dr Watson; it is to be his first solo case. Watson, Mortimer and Sir Henry Baskerville, the dead man’s heir, head to the hall on a bleak moor. Once there Watson and Sir Henry meet the locals, all of whom are more than a little strange and rather suspicious. Inevitably Watson eventually has to call Holmes for help.

Given the array of comic talent on display one might expect this to be a comedy classic… unfortunately it isn’t. There are a few funny moments but elsewhere gags aren’t particularly funny or go on far too long. The script feels like something rejected by the Carry On team, even they never sank to having gags about urinating Chihuahuas. The cast was solid enough given the material, although I’m not sure why Dudley Moore played Watson with a Welsh accent. All of them have been in better films. Overall I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see this; it is just about worth watching on TV if there is nothing else of interest on or if the DVD is in the bargain bin at a charity shop.

Moore and Peter Cook Up a Big DUD!

Painful. Wincing. Shameful. Just a few quick words to summarize my experience sitting through what looked to be a promising parody by a couple of generally very funny and talented men – Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. This film starts off badly and then bottoms out within the first ten minutes. The rest of the film really became an onerous chore to sit through and only and I mean ONLY was saved by the promise of seeing some great British character actors and funny men/ladies in bit parts. Unfortunately watching Hugh Griffith, Prunella Scales, Terry-Thomas, and oh so ever did I feel sorry for someone Joan Greenwood embarrass themselves with witless, nonsensical, unfunny material did little to improve matters at all. Peter Cook plays Sherlock Holmes and really misses the character entirely, but he need not fear because Dudley Moore as Watson with a hideous Scottish brogue is even worse. The jokes are stale for the most part – missing hugely. There is a terrible Exorcist sequence that made me just want to fast-forward the rest of the film. but like a trooper I sat through till the end and was relieved when it finally finished. The story has the basic structure of the Doyle novel intact with some obvious changes meant to be funny. And some of the changes would have been funny maybe if a little more had been done with the material. I am not saying there is nothing funny in the film. There are a few bright spots. Dudley Moore with a chihuahua and Denholm Elliot was a decent comedic scene until it just went on and on. And I also liked the sequence with Cook and Moore as a one-legged man trying for a position as a runner on the moors for Holmes. That was, for me at least, easily the funniest scene in the entire film. The rest is a mismatch of things that just didn’t work for me at all. Maybe a bit more respect for the material would have rendered this more amusing. Maybe some more realistic characterizations and less broad, really broad, and embarrassingly broad portrayals by Cook and Moore and Griffith as a man with a young girlfriend with the bust of a popular stripper and who enjoys throwing chunks of meat on the moors, Joan Greenwood, yes, Joan Greenwood, vomiting pea soup with spinning head, and Kenneth Williams really going over the top- even for him – toning it down a bit and making their characters a bit more believable might have helped. The script though is woefully lacking even for a farce like this. Director Paul Morrissey show little talent here and it is a real pity when you have such huge talents to work with. Penelope Keith is wonderful in a brief cameo as a bordello hostess(sultry too). Spike Milligan has a fine brief cameo as a policeman. Terry-Thomas is Terry-Thomas in a final bow as that which he basically made his career playing, a cad. This was his last meaningful screen role – a pity for Thomas fans but at least you get an older vintage Thomas nevertheless. More than anything else I was just surprised at the low level of intellect, given a title like The Hound of the Baskervilles, required, nay, even expected, to enjoy this moronic, sophomoric tripe. A real pity as I said.
