In 1930, a young Usha (Sara Ali Khan) watched her schoolteacher, an earnest man and supporter of Gandhi, get beaten up by the police. As a young child, barely 3 feet high, she still tried to stop the police and got hurt in the process. At home, her father, a judge named Hariprasad (Sachin Khedekar), locks her up in a room to try to curb her courage. The next day, they watch Siberian cranes from their window, and Usha exclaims that she wants to fly too. Hariprasad introduces Usha to the radio as a medium through which she can get news from the whole world.Many years later (in 1942, Bombay), a 22-year-old Usha is at the heart of the freedom fight, something her father, who is still compliant with the British and enjoys the benefits of the same (receiving a car for his work), doesn’t know about. Usha has a few friends along with her, including a man named Fahad (Sparsh Srivastav) and the love of her life, Kaushik (Abhay Verma). Other colleagues include Antara (Aditi Sanwal), Bhaskar (Pratik Yadav) and Kamat (Sangram Salvi). The gang gets involved with the Congress party at the insistence of Balbir, their leader. Usha lies to her father and swears she has nothing to do with them.Usha and the gang get to see Gandhi (Uday Chandra) a little while later, and she pledges to become a “Brahmachari.” This includes a vow of celibacy and makes Kaushik very upset. Though initially he’s heartbroken that she would make such a decision without speaking with him, he ends up continuing to fight anyway. This is when Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement. The British consider this as an act of treason since the 2nd world war is still going on. The British ban the Congress Party, and in the process, all of the big names and the Congress party leaders got arrested. During this time, Usha and the gang attempt to keep the Indian Flag upright but get brutally beaten up by the police. Still, the gang doesn’t plan on giving up soon, or at least Usha and Fahad. Seeing as all the press is controlled by the enemy, there’s one thing lacking in the country and that is communication. As the British spread their lies, the country’s unity is broken, so Usha comes up with the idea of starting an illegal radio broadcast. Immediately, two of the members of the gang (Antara and Bhaskar) decide to leave because they don’t plan on getting hanged.Usha, Kaushik, and Fahad find themselves in a difficult position when the radio transmitter they want to purchase is going to cost them (Rs 4000, or the cost of 1 Kg of Gold) much more than they expected. Still, Usha is determined to get her hands on it. This is when her grand aunt (Madhu Raja) offers to sell some of her gold because this is the only way she can contribute to the Quit India Movement. Overjoyed, Usha and the gang get the engineer, Firdaus (Anand Tiwari), to set up the radio for them and teach them how to use it. 42.34 is the frequency, and the gang broadcast recorded messages from the Congress leaders every night at 8:30 p.m. The message spreads quickly in certain parts of the country, specifically between Mangalore and Ajmer, even getting attention from Ram Manohar Lohia (Emraan Hashmi), a political agitator on the radar of the British.On the other hand, Usha is struggling to communicate with her father, who seems to be more distant than ever before. Usha tells Hariprasad that she is doing late night classes with a professor, while she was working on her radio broadcasts. When he learns that she is lying (Hariprasad invites the professor to home) and running a radio station, he tries to stop her again, but this time she runs away, calling his love an obstacle to her flight. She’s willing to give her life for the country, and her father can’t do anything to stop her now. As an independent woman, Usha becomes more involved with the party and finally gets to meet Lohia, an inspirational figure. When he learns that it is she and her friends who are running the radio, he decides to work with them to make the Congress radio the voice of the country. Seeing as all the leaders are locked up and there’s no other way to communicate, this would be the only way to get the country to act on the Quit India Movement. Lohia brings in his technical experts to increase the range and the sound quality of the broadcast.With the help of Lohia’s radio expert, the team has the perfect system to deliver clear messages across the country. Suddenly, everyone is tuned in to 42.34 at 8:30 p.m. every night, making it a nuisance for the British. The British thought that they had crushed the Quit India Movement, but Congress Radio has reignited it. This could lead to countrywide protests and agitation, so the British started to search for the radio operators. John Lyre (Alexx O’Nell), the man who arrested Gandhi and the rest, is put on a mission to catch the radio operators. Corrigan (Benedict Garrett) is the Chief of Military Intelligence who informs John that the transmitter is in Bombay. Kamble (Manoj Diwakar) is a policeman working for John. He warns Balbir that the police are on the hunt for Congress Radio.Lyre realizes that there are only a few radio engineers in the city and manages to catch Firdaus, who gives up the position of their new transmitter (the only way they could’ve countered triangulation). Earlier, in the process of saving Firdaus, Balbir (Godaan Kumar), an ardent member of the fight, sacrifices himself.On the other hand, seeing Usha put herself in more danger (she was almost arrested by the police when she went to procure a transmitter range enhancer from a person, who turned out to be aligned with the police) as the days go by, Kaushik decides to leave her side because he can’t watch her set herself up for inevitable death. Somehow, for a little while, the kids succeed in hiding the radio from Lyre, but soon, using American technology (including a radio signal detection van) and triangulation, Lyre is able to find the radio.Usha is stopped in her stride while trying to escape from the building where they’re operating the radio. Somehow, Fahad and she are able to escape and hide the transmitter from the police, though their entire plan seems to be in jeopardy. They now know that John is using 2 radio detection vans and can pinpoint their location within 5 minutes. Usha suggests using 2 transmitters so that are not allowed to fixate on one location.Diwali is chosen as the day for revolution, and in pockets all across the country, people start to prepare for a revolution. On the other hand, Lohia’s location is compromised, but he continues to work from the shadows, now leaving everything up to Usha and Fahad. Firdaus is arrested by John and the location of one of the transmitters is also compromised. Usha and Fahad will both give their lives for the country in the blink of an eye, but Usha manages to hurt Fahad’s feelings by using his limp against him. Fahad gives her his blessings because he claims he’d have done the same thing.Usha knows there’s no way she won’t be caught this time, and she’s okay with that as long as Lohia’s complete message reaches the country. Kaushik shows up now, telling Usha that for some, revolution is their love, and for others, love is their revolution. The two of them block the doors to make sure the police can’t get in easily because, as soon as the broadcast starts, there’s only 5 minutes until they’re found out. Lohia’s message is quite a long one, and all Usha wants is for him to make the declaration.Ultimately, the police break in right after the declaration is made, and the revolution begins. Usha and Kaushik are caught as the national song Vande Mataram plays on the radio. Kaushik is unable to stand the torture and signs a paper naming Lohia as the instigator of the revolution. In the meantime, Usha does not budge.Usha was sentenced to four years of imprisonment. While in prison, she receives a letter of apology from her father. He’s never felt more pride than as the father of Usha. He even gets a visit from Lohia and finally breaks away from the comfortable shackles of the British. When Usha is released from prison, 20,000 people come to receive her, despite it being illegal for so many to gather. Kaushik and Fahad are in the crowd too, and Usha’s father claims that she’s not just a revolutionary; she is herself the revolution. Lohia was caught in 1944 and continued to fight much later.

A stimulating treasure hunt

This is a very good film. I recommend not letting any initial impressions dissuade from watching ‘Legend of the Lost Locket’.

It is a tale of a valuable locket missing now for two hundred years. Due to some recent discoveries, a woman sets out to find it once and for all. Her mother spent half of her fortune many years ago to purchase one half of this cherished locket, the half with the picture of a man. Her legacy would be to one day find the missing piece so the man and woman could finally be together again. But, she was unsuccessful and has since passed on. Now her daughter, who runs the antique business, is on the trail of this precious item. Lately, it has become the focus of some other antique hunters. It is more than simply a picture of a young woman in love, it is a jewel that symbolizes an age old love story of a man and woman separated in the early 1800’s. He came to America, and she remained behind in Europe.

We experience the history of the locket and some backstory of the two who were in love, yet unable to stay together. He settled in New England and founded a town, and now two centuries later, some local residents get a hint that the missing piece of the locket could be nearby.

Word is spreading, and now the fabled trinket has risen to the level of priceless heirloom representing a remarkable history. Antique seeking enthusiasts the world over are becoming engrossed in its appeal. But All who seek it are unaware of the depth of the bond shared by the original owners…that it was hidden to protect the memory of her journey across the world to reunite with him, in hopes of rekindling their love.

Strange and odd

I think about halfway through this movie, I decided it just didn’t make sense. Our heroine hails from London, visits a small town in the NE USA to hunt for a lost locket half, and immediately breaks into the town hall at night looking for archives that should help her in her search. Of course, there are security alarms that tip off the town sheriff who arrives, arrests her, and then gets involved in the locket search. Make sense to you?

Then we get the feeling that someone is stalking our heroine and reading her private notes, probably learning about the locket and hoping to discover the valued item first. This “mystery” is pretty easily explained when the culprit is caught on another illegal (attic, this time) search & she confesses everything previously denied because of a bluffed fingerprint identification (which isn’t true). After all is said and done, the locket is found (finally) & the sheriff and heroine somehow fall in love and she stays in the small town to start her antique business and be with her sheriff.

The production values are pretty good except for one glaring exception: lighting and camera work on black actors aren’t up to the challenge. It is as though we really don’t know how to photograph dark-skinned actors in such a way as to see their expressions and complexions realistically. Still makes no sense.

Worst movie ever

A tiring watch with zero elements of intrigue…!!!

GV Prakash Kumar, with all his typical range of expressions, fits the part. His physicality actually helps the movie, as he never really becomes a larger-than-life hero & does carry the whole movie on his shoulder… Mamitha Baiju, as the female lead, is mostly an on-looker who never really causes any trouble to the narrative…

The structure of this movie by Nikesh RS is extremely basic. Instead of fleshing out the story with a layered study of discrimination, Nikesh just throws a Kerala story-like imagination into this film. It is completely okay to have a fictional setting in movies. But when you are doing that in a story that talks about real places, a level of conviction is required… The movie actually simplifies the complex nature of the conflict into a mere hate campaign…

We all have seen a segment of the population, who shows hate towards a category of people based on their caste or language. Films addressing such political and sensitive topics are indeed a necessity, as art has that political layer to its credit. But when you monsterize everyone from a region in order to create a mass hero, the gross generalization is something that is extremely problematic…resulting in creation of unnecessary hatred…

There is no Malayali character with a positive role in the film.

The movie has a cliched format of storytelling and is melodramatic.

There are no lighter moments anywhere because it is a serious story.

Poor writing makes it predictable. Director Nikesh RS fails in the execution…

Overall Rebel keeps all the political fronts on the wrong side and focuses only on the political friction or the injustice done to the TSP.

They made a racist movie trying to make an anti-racist movie

For a movie that tries to talk about how education is the key to eradicate sentiments of racism and tribalism, the movie pathetically falls victim to that which it tries to preach against. It’s a movie that can’t seem to shut up about how so innocent and just Tamil people are, while at the same time portraying their Malayalam counter-parts as a group of vile, evil racists. You have to be a special kind of stupid to not see how you are exactly that which you’re trying so hard to criticize. It’s just an ugly movie with less to nothing redeeming about it. Excusing the blatant racism, all you find is inconsistent writing with no room for logic; cliches; tropes; bad acting and dull music. It’s not worth your time. Movies like this are best ignored.

Just skip

Some of the movies can be avoided just by looking at the main leads. If someone like Sara Ali khan, ananya etc are in a movie as main lead, it’s strict avoid. The makeup and style of Sara in this movie doesn’t suit the time period. It looks more fake. And her acting is just bad. Even a child actor has more expressions than Sara.

Coming to the story it’s again the usual story set during British rule. The story is slow and boring. The makers should do more research before doing such movies. Most of it looks like fiction. Need to fill some more of characters and just adding some random text here.

Uncomfortable Glimpse into Radicalization

The story itself is bold, intriguing, and offers an important glimpse into history. It’s a story that should be told and brought to light.

Unfortunately, the writing and way the story was told fell flat for me. Despite the close-ups, deep glimpses into the character’s eyes, and creation of atmosphere, there was only one scene that stands out to me. One were Usha hides under a burka when the police search for her and Kaushik shows her his shaking hands when she reappears. The rest of the movie felt like the same message and image on repeat: stand up for revolution and freedom. After a while, the same scene and message on repeat is just flogging a dead horse.

What I found frustrating was the message, despite coming from the right place, did not shed any new ideas or perspectives on the plight against colonialism. Instead, it amplified stereotypes. It was the stereotyping in the film and the characters that unsettled me the most. John Lyre, the British man hunting down the revolutionaries, is portrayed as ruthless, cold-hearted, and intense to the point that he feels more like a cartoon than a human man bred to view himself as superior (pure) and take pride in his country (points that could have been paralleled and contrasted with Usha’s purity and pride in country, but were entirely missed). Usha, on the other hand, is portrayed as self-righteous, ego-centric (her ideas being the purest above all others’), naive about the impact she had on relationships with family and friends, and ruthless in her intensity to revolutionize India.

The most unsetting point was the way the movie glossed over radicalization. The ability to influence and spread one’s beliefs (such as through a radio) comes with intense responsibility. Usha never questions once the possible myriad of outcomes that could happen… including igniting a rebellion that may fail/may lead to needless loss of lives and bloodshed. Especially since the film stated (but did not show) that she was a Gandhian.

Overall, I look forward to learning more about Usha and appreciate the movie from bringing her plight to light.

Unsung hero’s are the greatest of all the heroes…!!!

Based on a true story of Usha Mehta a young woman who starts a underground radio during 1942 of India’s freedom struggle called “CONGRESS RADIO” broadcasting the speeches of imprisoned freedom fighters & there by reigniting the “QUIT INDIA MOMENT” spreading resistance & unity across the country which later was snapped by Britishers….

Any periodic story of our unsung hero’s are a miracle when told on silverscreen with ongoing commercialisation or spy universe of movie which is only meant to shower money,So we need to cherish them & acknowledge them as we owe them coz of freedom which we enjoying today… Thanks to Kannan Iyer for his passion to narrate the plot as it’s “NO MAN’S LAND” in current Bollywood trend… Whether the flick survives or its disaster but it’s our duty not to discourage his noble thoughts…

Sara Ali Khan has definitely improvised a lot and her emotional counterpart does have a soul in it…thanks to Kannan Iyer for believing her ability… Emraan hashmi role could have a second thought of essaying a different person as he doesn’t fit into the role and while he spins the charakha itakes embarassing…

Technically it’s well sound making the major compliment but what fails is that at the end of the movie we don’t have a emotional impact making just a timepass…

Overall The film is a pure, clean and good-intentioned period drama…give it a try you won’t be disappointed…

Whose brilliant idea was it to add dancers to the Memoriam segment in the show?

The Academy Awards would get a higher rating if they had respected those we lost this year. Sadly, they decide to have Andrea Bocelli and his son sing beautifully onstage. The memoriam video wasn’t used entirely. I could see dancers and the orchestra. It was disrespectful to those we lost at all. As a viewer at home, I didn’t see the memoriam entirely. It was disrupted by distractions. Please restore the memoriam to remember those we lost.

Apart from the memoriam disaster, the awards did better an hour earlier. Jimmy Kimmel did a superb job as host. The awards moved along smoothly without showing clips in the acting categories. The presenters were fine. The show ended a few minutes earlier than usual. Sadly there were no surprises this time especially in the acting categories. Both films, “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things,” dominated the night. Ryan Gosling did well as did the other performers. I would have liked to have seen the film clips for the actors rather than five previous academy award winners to say something remarkable about a particular nominee and welcome a new member into the club.

When Marvin Brando consigned an Oscar to . . .

. . . a representative of the original Americans a few years back, the Academy revoked this recognition of such individuals’ unheralded knack of putting on a brave face, and erased Marvin’s attempt to spotlight an overlooked cohort of actors as if he were just a kooky visiting Martian who did not fully understand Earthling politics. However, the build-up to Tinsel Town’s “Big Night” this year promised that the one sure winner would reinstate Marvin’s effort to finally right the wrongs of the Twentieth Century. Shockingly, like Lucy yet again pulling the football away before Charlie Brown can kick it, this promised restitution was shifted at the last moment to an infamous harlot in a self-proclaimed broken dress. Talk about Hollywood’s Walk of Shame!

96th Academy Awards

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the awards and he is regarded as a safe pair of hand. As long as he did not make jokes about Robert Downey Jr. They all bombed.

Kimmel later redeemed himself with his response to an online review by a former president.

Oppenheimer was the big winner of the night. It took all the major honours. Poor Thing was the poor thing but it still won four. Barbie’s Oscar went for a song.

Once again a Martin Scorsese film leaved empty handed. Like The Irishman, lots of nominations but no wins.

Here is a hint Marty. Next time make a shorter film! Actually Kimmel noted how long some of the contenders were. Did anyone think of my bladder.

Some of the victory speeches were still cloying. Seeing Twins Arnie and Danny DeVito take on Michael Keaton’s Batman was fun.

A slick show but once again they messed up the In Memoriam section. I want to see the people who passed on. Not the singers, dancers or the orchestra.

As for the Best Picture presenter. Give up on getting the actor who was in that hit movie fifty years ago. It’s way past their bedtime.

A masterpiece skateboard documentary

What a great film. My wife, who doesn’t even understand the skateboarding world, loved the film. Incredible stories within stories and an unexpected ending, I learned a lot. I love discovery documentaries, that teach you about a subject you may not otherwise be familiar with. The characters are interesting, it’s dark, yet uplifting, and it left me thinking about life, tribe, family, and love. It is a raw film about life’s challenges and victories. The name is a little misleading because it’s not all about men. In fact, one of the girls from the poster turns out to be a world champion skateboarder, and ends up in the skateboarding Hall of Fame. It’s beautiful yet heartbreaking.
